Another place being targeted was, unsurprisingly, Alterra General Hospital. First, it was an important facility for Alterra.
The aborigines had seen how people they had taken down would revive enough to continue fighting after going through here! So, naturally, targeting this place was common sense.
A large bonus was the fact that it contained an Elder. Volohov wasn't that high on the target list as the others because everyone knew he could not be the Lord, but he was still a target because of his talents.
That said, among the Elders, Volohov was the one who was most exposed. He was not in the bunker, nor was he in the heavily-guarded Guard Station—he was working in the hospital where people come and go.
They could not exactly block his workspace, right? Not to mention, he was too important to be hiding away.
What they did as a compromise was just to dedicate a guarded surgery room for him. It had complete tools and potions needed that would last a long time, minimizing his contact with the outside world during the war.
There was also a bed at the side where he could rest on, if there were no patients. However, it was unlikely he'd get decent rest when the war began.
He was guarded by Brandon and a few other aborigines, stationed in the hallway, and there were also guards near the entrances of the hospital, though they could not afford to designate guards to make rounds.
Fortunately, like the Research Center, the hospital had electricity. There was a smoke alarm detection system and the nurses could just light a small fire, and the smoke would send an alarm throughout the building. There was also a public announcement channel where an assigned person would announce where the smoke was triggered, and some protectors would check it out.
As for the rest of the people there… they were patients. Most of the people here were weak, injured, or dying.
Well, that was what the enemies believed when they attacked.
Imagine their surprise when they lunged into the hospital, thinking it'd be full of dying and weak people, only to be mobbed from all sides!!
"WHAT?!"
SLAM!
BANG!
It wasn't even the guards that most trespassers were fighting against—but it was the patients themselves!
The hospital might be full of patients—but that also meant it was full of people who had been fighting in this war!
"Idiot! We can be careless because we're at the hospital!"
"You're the idiot for attacking here!"
"PSH, the strongest one is level 23! We can handle that! We're all past level 10! Three would be past level 30!" another said, showing off his math skills.
Anyway, Alterrans yelled, and they took advantage of numbers (and limited space) to mob the enemies who dared enter the hospital.
They didn't even get near the hallway where Volohov was.
...
Not every place had things going as smoothly, however.
While all the enemy powerhouses and most teams were practical and targeted the Elders, there were also those who just wanted chaos—those who just wanted to see blood.
They believed the other teams would be able to handle the enemy elites and elders on their own, so why couldn't they have some fun?
These people determined where the evacuation houses were and targeted those. A particular breach from the South decided to attack the Evacuation house there. After killing all those people—women, old people, children, and weak bastards—they would torture the guards to determine where the other locations were, deciding to hit Alterra's weak spots all over the territory.
This was the easiest to locate because it was not in one of the bunkers and there were more guards around this area than others.
It wasn't that all of Alterra's bunkers were used up. It was just that most citizens opted to be above ground so they could help one way or another.
For example, being eyes and ears during the war, which most of them had accomplished splendidly and had been greatly helpful in determining more than half of the earlier leaks.
It was also how this team of enemies determined where they were.
That said, Alterra naturally had guards stationed in the area. Each evacuation house had a small team, but there could only be so many since everyone was busy guarding the walls, the elders, and every other sensitive facility in the territory.
The Basset side, who decided to target these houses, were nearly a hundred people, averaging level 15 or 16. They immediately launched their attacks without warning, and the guards immediately lit the flares as soon as they saw the enemies.
However, they knew that the stronger guards wouldn't get there within the next few minutes, especially with what was going on all over the territory at this time.
So... each of them understood that it would be up to them if they wanted to last until the reinforcements arrived!
[Wind Blade]
The enemies approaching were hit with successive sharp wind blades. It was not lethal to people at their level, but those who were hit felt a little damage to their equipment.
It was none other than one of the female captains, Cassie. Next to her was Bumi,1 her deputy, and Shinho,2 the captain of the other team, holding their weapons right next to her.
The rest of the team paired up to guard the other access points to the evacuation area, determined to stop the enemies at all cost.
Their respective families—Cassie and Bumi's grandmothers and Shinho's little sister— were also in this evacuation center, so they were naturally extra protective of it.
They were not a big team—after all, their strong guards were much more needed in places that could make or break the war.
However, Alterra cared deeply for its citizens. There were a few park bunkers and a few houses used as evacuation centers, and each one would have hundreds of citizens compressed there. Each one had at least two guard teams assigned to them, and each one swore to protect the citizens.
So… even when Cassie, Bumi, and the rest of the teams were quickly filled with injuries trying to block the enemy's way, they didn't mind it at all.
The loyal citizens of Alterra naturally didn't want to hide away, especially when their guards—some of whom were family—were pushed back, stabbed, and got in danger.
They quickly joined in the fight, taking out weapons and fighting against enemies twice or even thrice their levels.
They had always felt bad for their weaknesses, for their inability to catch up with Alterra as it grew stronger and stronger, attracting more and more dangerous enemies in turn.
Yes, they had used their numbers and locations to betray the location of enemies trying to hide in the territory, but that was about it! They even took up the energy of several guards to protect them!
So... many tried to be optimistic with this attack—thinking it was their chance to do more for Alterra!
Even if they were weak… they were determined to contribute, even in their own way!
Bumi was the dude who has a crush on Cassie. If you remember they had their grandmothers setting them up.
