Chapter 79: Chapter 79 Old Friend
A group of onlookers gathered around, eager to see the spectacle unfold.
Lin Feng’s gaze shifted from the reddened face before him to a few guards who had come to support, their faces filled with terror, not daring to step forward at all. They were merely a group of Martial Apprentices at the seventh or eighth Layers.
"You... Let Zhang San go, his cousin is the Deputy Commander of the Patrol Camp, you’re courting death by offending him!"
"Right, no matter who you are, you’re dead for sure! Your only choice now is to release Zhang San, then kneel and apologize to him. Perhaps he will be generous enough to let bygones be bygones and spare your life!"
Seeing the arrogant demeanor of a group of guards, Lin Feng frowned. They were indeed all bullies, relying on their connections. So what if someone was the Deputy Commander of the Patrol Camp? He was merely a martial master; what was there for Lin Feng to fear?
"Listen, hear that... lad, I advise against doing anything stupid. If you release me now and kneel a few times, I guarantee I won’t trouble you. But if you insist on being reckless, no one can save you. Your parents, your brothers, and friends will all be arrested by my cousin. Believe me, I have that capability, since my cousin is the Deputy Commander of the Patrol Camp..."
The guard held by Lin Feng sneered.
"Kneel to you?"
Lin Feng looked at the guard in his hand with a sneer that wasn’t quite a smile, "Do you not understand the situation?"
The guard was taken aback for a moment, disdainfully said: "Kid, I know you’re stronger than me, but so what? Don’t think I’m just bluffing. If you dare to touch me, I assure you, you’ll die a grimmer death than anyone. Why aren’t you kneeling down and apologizing right now?"
Crack
Lin Feng exerted strength in his hand, and the guard immediately spewed blood from his mouth, his eyes bulged, and his head tilted to one side.
In an instant, everyone was stunned. Murder at the gates of the Imperial City; this guy actually dared to kill someone.
Lin Feng tossed the body aside like trash, then swept a glance over the few petrified guards who immediately shrank back. Lin Feng chuckled coldly and then strode into the city, ignoring the petrified crowd.
"Quick, report to Deputy Commander Zhang, say that his cousin was killed by an unknown lad!"
Deaths in Imperial City were a daily occurrence, but this time it was the Deputy Commander’s cousin who died. The news spread instantaneously, and Lin Feng’s portrait was posted at every major street corner.
Lin Feng glanced at a notice on the wall, undisturbed, even letting out a cold laugh. In the vast Imperial City, if he could be caught by a group of Martial Apprentices, he might as well give up.
"There’s about a month left until Iron Spear Divine Marquis makes his appearance. I might as well stay here for the time being. Naturally, I can’t go to the big restaurants, but fortunately, I’m familiar with Imperial City and know some special places."
Pulling his straw hat lower, Lin Feng quickly disappeared into the streets, turning left and right until he reached a cluster of low houses, where ordinary commoners lived.
"You are...?"
The elderly woman who answered the door looked at Lin Feng with confusion.
"Lodging."
Lin Feng gave her a Gold Pearl, and she immediately beamed with joy, opening the door wide to welcome Lin Feng in.
"Young man, this side room has been cleaned up. If you need anything, just tell this old woman," the old lady said.
Lin Feng nodded, and once the old woman left, he looked around. He had been here before, met this same old lady, and even stayed in this same side room. If he remembered correctly, there was a hidden passage under the bed, just in case of emergencies.
Lin Feng flipped through the pages, thinking to himself that indeed there was, and finally he was able to put his mind at rest.
By nightfall, the old lady personally brought food and hot water. It was during the time of soaking feet that three more people arrived in the small courtyard – two men and a woman. Lin Feng inside the house could clearly hear their conversation.
It seemed they were also staying here, which was beyond Lin Feng’s expectations because in his previous stay, he never knew there were other guests. Peering through the window, he could indeed see the two men and a woman talking with the old lady.
There was no conflict between them; after all, the price was low, just one Gold Pearl for a stay, which was much more affordable compared to the inns.
"Yang Min, we’ll stay here for the time being. Tomorrow or the day after, we’ll go check out that place you mentioned."
"Alright, let’s rest early then."
After exchanging a few simple words, the three went their separate ways.
Lin Feng’s thoughts were piqued upon hearing this. Yang Min, why does that name sound so familiar? As if he had heard it somewhere before. Suddenly, Lin Feng’s eyes snapped open, and he stared at the room of the person who had just closed their door.
Yang Min? Could it be her?
Lin Feng was shocked. If it wasn’t a coincidence of names, then it must indeed be her without a doubt!
"To think that I would encounter her here, but that’s to be expected. I met her previously at the Divine Wind Camp, and she is probably participating in the camp too! It’s not strange to meet her here! Just never thought she would be staying here as well!"
A slight smile curled on Lin Feng’s lips. Interesting, it looked like he was going to have something to do for the coming month.
...
Inside the wooden hut, Yang Min latched the door and quietly leaned against it, listening carefully for a while. Assuring that no one was moving outside, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. The moment she turned around, her face transformed into another appearance.
"Seriously, it’s exhausting being this woman."
Yang Min rubbed her shoulders and took off her shoes and socks to soak her feet, holding a book of exceptional martial techniques and beginning to read with relish.
Suddenly, she frowned and lifted her head. For some reason, she felt as if someone was watching her, but when she looked up, everything seemed normal.
"Am I just being paranoid?"
Yang Min thought back to the feeling she just had, which only lasted a moment. She looked carefully outside the window for some time, but everything was quiet and still. Shaking her head, she muttered softly, "Most likely just my imagination. Forget it, I’ll skip cultivation tonight. Tomorrow I still need to go to that place with them."
Having said that, she blew out the candle and went to rest.
...
The night passed without incident. As the dawn light grew faintly bright, Lin Feng had been sitting cross-legged all night. The next day, upon hearing the creaking of wooden doors from several opposite rooms, Lin Feng instantly opened his eyes. Only when the sound of footsteps had completely disappeared did he follow suit and leave his room.
Within his line of sight, he could see three silhouettes shuttle atop the roofs with extremely graceful movement techniques. One of them was Yang Min, but today, she appeared in the guise of a man. Lin Feng found nothing unusual about this.
Yang Min, known in the Divine Wind Camp by the nickname Hua Wuchang, changing genders for him was a matter of minutes.
Their family was involved in the bounty business – that is, the wanted notices posted by various official bureaus. For instance, the notorious bandit leader of Black Cliff Mountain, sitting like an eagle, has such a notice consistently posted. Whoever can take down the bandit leader and provide his head can exchange it for five thousand Gold Pearls.
