Chapter 982 -985: Competing in Gift-Giving (2)

Over the past few years, Emily Taylor grew increasingly attached to her family home.

She had no choice; her two children were distant – the elder cold and rebellious, the younger quiet and aloof, neither of them particularly close to her.

Alone in the vast Lucas family estate, she often felt a sense of coldness and loneliness.

But at her family home, her relatives liked to gather around her, and Charles Taylor, that little kid, never failed to amuse her until she couldn’t stop smiling.

Gradually, Emily’s heart began to favor her own family.

Yet, she hadn’t realized it herself.

“Paul Davidson would understand, he definitely wouldn’t next time. Oh… Young Master Charlie, you are my nephew, you must have prepared a gift for your aunt, right? What did you prepare? Can you bring it out so we can all admire it?”

Charles Taylor’s words were indeed very impolite.

But since he was a child, there weren’t too many rules on how he should talk. Even if he said something excessive, the adults would think that it was just the innocent babble of a child without any ulterior motives.

“Paul, of course, Ben Lucas, your nephew, will have prepared a birthday greeting for your aunt. You, at such a young age, are worrying too much and being too nosey!”

“How is that being too nosey? Paul is just showing concern for his aunt. It’s all out of filial affection, right, Emily?”

The grandmother couldn’t bear to hear her grandson rebuked, so as soon as Milly Gray had feigned admonishing Charles Taylor, she eagerly took Charles into her arms, stroking his little head and shielding him in her embrace.

“Hehe, yes, that’s right.” Emily Taylor smiled slightly with curled lips, but her complexion didn’t look too good.

She knew very well that Aidan Lucas and Ben Lucas wouldn’t forget her birthday gift.

It was just that both men preferred to keep a low profile and disliked making a scene, so even if they were to give her a gift, it would be in private at home.

Neither of them would ever, like Charles Taylor, present her with an expensive gift in front of everyone, or sweetly utter congratulatory words to her.

In the past, Emily Taylor, just like Aidan Lucas and Ben Lucas, preferred to avoid the limelight.

But as a woman gets older, she starts to enjoy the lively atmosphere, especially after having grandchildren, it’s inevitable that she begins to make comparisons.

Her own grandson rarely smiled and didn’t know how to sweet-talk her.

On the other hand, the child from her brother’s family, her little nephew, had a sweet mouth and knew how to flatter people.

Comparing the two, naturally, Emily Taylor would prefer the child who knew how to sweet-talk.

“Ben, what gift have you prepared for your grandma’s birthday? Your uncle has given a gift; now you show the gift you’ve got for your grandma, to make her happy.”

The grandmother herself continued Charles Taylor’s line of questioning, to avoid making his impoliteness stand out as embarrassing.

Emily Taylor was well aware of Jordan Lancaster’s temperament; with his reserved nature, he was unlikely to casually respond to the grandmother’s question. Even if he bothered to speak, he probably hadn’t brought a gift with him at all.

She was about to step in and smooth things over when she heard a pleasant voice ring out lightly, “Hmm, I did prepare a gift. I was planning to give it to grandma after we got back, as a surprise.”

Young Master Ben Lucas’s lips curled slightly, and his delicate face carried a gentle smile.

At that smile, Emily Taylor almost thought she was seeing things.

Ever since Lily Gray passed away, Ben Lucas was a good child in all aspects except that he rarely smiled.

Like Ethan Wilson, he was only slightly more amiable just after waking up, beyond the ‘adorable in the morning’ phase, it was hard to see him display any sort of pleasant demeanor.

All these years had passed, and this was the first time since Lily Gray’s departure that Emily Taylor witnessed a smile on the child’s face.

Not to mention that he even managed to say such a long sentence in one go.
