Hearing his words, everyone turned their heads, almost instinctively looking towards the silent man.
The man’s large palm rested on the woman’s hand, playing with her small hand in his own.
For as long as the meal had lasted, he had been playing with her hand under the table, completely indifferent to whatever else was being discussed.
It was only when he felt everyone’s gaze land on his face that the man barely raised his eyes and asked coldly, “Is there a problem?”
His indifferent and distant demeanor was enough to send a chill down anyone’s spine.
Emily Taylor could only muster the courage to ask, “That… Ethan, are these gifts something you prepared for mom?”
“Gifts?” The man only then diverted his attention from the woman’s soft and adorable fingers to those sparkling, valuable jewels.
“No, the gifts I prepared for you are with Benjamin. If you want them now, I’ll have him bring them over.”
“No no, that’s not what I meant,” Emily hastily waved her hand, “I was just trying to confirm whether these jewels… if you paid for them…” 𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝙗.𝒄𝒐𝒎
“No.”
Aidan Lucas raised an eyebrow coldly, “Judging by the craft, these jewels should be part of the European royal collection. They’re not something you can simply buy with money.”

And slightly louder, she said, “Yeah, meeting the parents for the first time, of course, I wanted to prepare something valuable. I gave the album to Ben and let him choose, Ben has good taste.”
No sooner had she finished speaking, a discordant voice cut through the air.
“Pff, keep on bragging, Lily Redington, like you could come up with these things? European royalty, as if you had connections with European royalty. I don’t believe it. These things must be a face-saving gesture from Brother Ethan!”
Milly Gray couldn’t keep her mouth shut, seeing Aidan Lucas cuddling Lily so affectionately was an eyesore for her.
“Well, believe it or not, it’s up to you, these gifts aren’t for you anyway,” Lily said, undisturbed by Milly’s opinion, smiling.
“You…”
“Let it be, Milly girl, show some respect to your aunt and cousin!” the grandmother said sternly, stopping Milly in her tracks.
Having dealt with Milly, she turned to look at Lily.
Her face, not deeply wrinkled, was filled with disapproval of Lily.
“And you, Miss Redington. We thank you for your kind intentions in attending Emily’s birthday banquet. Your presenting such valuable gifts to Emily shows filial piety, which is commendable. But, the old lady has something to tell you today: a fake will always be a fake, and it’s better for a girl to be honest.”
“You’re young and probably haven’t seen much, hence you might not realize the value and rarity of these gifts. Everyone here today is family, and we would give you face, laugh it off, and pretend we don’t know any better.”
“But someday, if you were in front of outsiders, people wouldn’t be so tolerant. They would only say that Ethan’s girlfriend is shallow, lacks upbringing, and is a girl who’s all about putting on a show. Lily, these words from your aunt may sound unpleasant, but they’re all for your own good. Do you understand?”
