"Are you sure you want to do this?" Uriel asked as he got the Camera ready.
"You let Sam do a Vlog with you, why can’t I?"
"That’s because..." Uriel failed to find an excuse that didn’t involve telling her that she lacked the charisma to male a Vlog, so he gave up and finished setting everything up. The tripod was set in the right place, the lights were on and with Medusa’s help they had a nice background to make it look more professional.
Truth be told, all Medusa did was gather random books from Uriel’s belongings and put them on a bookcase behind them, she also placed a desk in front with small decorations. However, both Luna and Uriel lacked the common sense to even think about fixing the background.
"Hi there fellow archaeology enthusiasts... and cryptozoologists," Uriel started with a bright smile just like Sam had taught him before, but Luna interrupted him by tugging on his shirt so he added the last part with a less excited voice. "Today I’m with my friend Moonlight, who happens to be an expert on cryptids."
"Uhm, hi." Luna said in a monotone.
"The reason why we’re here today is simple. We’ll be discussing a strange creature of the past, its existence was always considered a myth, but our expert claims otherwise."
"Yes." Luna nodded.
It might have seemed strange to make a Vlog about wendigos, but the reason actually pretty simple. After a long discussion they realized they didn’t know enough about wendigos to face them and without Water warlock’s blessing Uriel was unwilling to fight unknown entity rank creatures.
Vampires became weaker when exposed to UV light and wood was very effective to kill them, skinwalkers were heavily allergic to silver and Slendermen were weak to light, but they had no clue as to how to kill a wendigo.
That meant two things, they would have to leave the south district be until they figured out how to fight them and that a lot of people will probably die. Medusa insisted so much on saving everyone, in spite of knowing how dangerous the situation was and Emma came up with the idea of disclosing the presence of wendigos to the public.
Not openly, of course, since that would mean drawing too much attention, but if people started suspecting something was off on the south district they would probably search for answers on the internet.
"But before jumping into our discussion, we first need to understand what are wendigos and where do they come from. The first mention of wendigos comes from the Algonquian tribes who depicted it as a creature that resembled a man with deer horns, this is particularly interesting considering they also claimed the creature was invisible. Can you believe that!?"
"Yes." Luna nodded again with a poker face.
"The Algonquian said it was a malevolent spirit, but let’s find more about it directly from the source. My beautiful assistant will read the Algonquian tale of the wendigos."
"Uhm... it’s not a tale, it’s a factual recount of events." Luna added. Uriel’s brows were already twitching in annoyance, but thankfully Nika stepped on camera with an old book.
"Beware my child, don’t go to the mountains alone. For when the wind is white you and you can’t see your own steps, you will freeze and become one with the mountain. You must find a cave or a hollow trunk tree, don’t try to find your way back because the evil will mislead your feet and guide you to perdition like it happened to your aunt.
"She was a huntress on her prime, her steps were always silent and no beast could escape her swift arrows. She loved to hunt and she was good at it. One winter day, where the caribou didn’t want to be seen and the village was hungry, she took her hunting group too far up the mountains and the wind became white with snow, and the eagles froze on the skies.
But this was not just a snow storm, it lasted twenty suns.
"The whole village mourned the passing of our best huntress and the people cried. We were all facing the worst of the winter with no berries and no meat, but after the white storm happened your aunt came back with meat.
Whe danced, we ate and thanked the Great spirit for our best huntress had returned, we received her in open arms, but we were blind with happiness and did not see that she came back by herself. She was silent, more than usual. She was hungry too, she came back different.
"This is what happened from her words: I found a cave and sheltered. I waited, but the white wind lasted too long. I thought I was going to die, but then I heard its voice. It beckoned me, it told me I was going to survive and will be blessed with a child, so I ate and I survived. That was what she said.
"She did not say what did she eat, she did not say who the father was, she did not say many things. All she did was going to hunt and coming back with meat, then she ate. Day after day, she came back with meat.
"And we did not see, our bellies were so full that we did not see that it was not caribou, it was not bear nor was it beaver. We did not see it was our brothers and sisters." As Nika’s reading progressed her voice became shaky and by the time she finished, she was evidetly scared out of her wits.
All she wanted to do was to close the book and be over with all that, but Luna didn’t share the sentiment.
"Uhm, Uhm, yes. That’s a wendigo." Luna nodded.
"Can you explain us what happened no that tale?" Uriel asked her.
"The woman got trapped in a cave and was convinced to eat the other hunters which turned her into a wendigo. Then, she came back and ate everyone."
"Someone must have survived, how else would the tale of what supposedly happened reach us?"
"Yes, of course. It was mentioned they were her family, so that’s probably it. She ate everyone who wasn’t her family. Probably because she wanted to turn them too, she was clearly feeding them human meat."
