Chapter 17 - 17 We Have a Common Enemy
Hospital!
Lin Banxia sat in the car, feeling unbearably frustrated.
What an unlucky start—her first plan had already been messed up by Huo Yanting.
How was she supposed to teach those scumbags a lesson now?
How could she protect the peace of the pear garden?
And how could she remain above the fray?
"I'll hand the test results over to my grandmother to review, so cooperate properly." When Huo Yanting came out of the hospital, he tossed the medical report directly in front of her.
Lin Banxia picked it up, scanned it quickly, and exclaimed, "Fractured leg? I need a wheelchair?"
"Yes," the man replied coldly.
"But..."
"No 'but's. If you want my grandmother to pity you, you have to play along," Huo Yanting said icily.
"But I'm not that badly hurt. If someone finds out, I'll be in serious trouble." Lin Banxia pursed her lips in dissatisfaction with his proposition. 𝚗ov𝚙𝚞𝚋.c𝚘m
"With me here, no one will find out. You just need to sit in a wheelchair for a week; my private doctor will accompany you the whole time and ensure your safety." Huo Yanting's frosty words carried no trace of emotion.
Lin Banxia was baffled. "Why are you helping me?"
"Because we share a common enemy." Huo Yanting's gaze shifted, his deep, restrained eyes reflecting her clear and bright ones. Their gazes intertwined, and their heartbeats suddenly raced.
Lin Banxia hurriedly withdrew her gaze, muttering nervously, "A common enemy? Are you saying your enemy is Huo Qinglin?"
"No. He's just one of the obstacles in my path. My real enemy is my uncle," Huo Yanting revealed without hesitation.
Lin Banxia's beautiful eyes widened slightly, her thoughts racing back to her previous life. She remembered Huo Yanting had been in a car accident, hospitalized for half a month, while Huo Qinglin's father—her father-in-law—tried to seize the CEO position during that time. But in the end, Huo Yanting defeated them, and her father-in-law fell into despair.
"Oh, I understand now!" Lin Banxia, having witnessed that drama in her past life, could empathize with Huo Yanting's emotions.
So, he had been wary all along. But then why had he still ended up in a car crash? Rumors said his injuries were severe, nearly fatal.
Perhaps even the smartest and most calculating people eventually stumble upon obstacles they can't overcome.
"Now that you know my secret, tell me—what should I do about it?" Lin Banxia was still recovering from the shock when his sudden words made her heart leap again.
Pale-faced and flustered, Lin Banxia glared at him, anger bubbling up. "I didn't deliberately try to learn your secret—you're the one who spilled it! It's not like I wanted to know, so why are you blaming me?"
"It doesn't matter whether I said it or not. The fact remains: now you know." His voice turned low as he leaned toward her, his overbearing presence making her breathing chaotic and her words harder to form.
"Mr. Huo, could you show some restraint? I'm still your cousin's fiancée, after all. Shouldn't you keep your distance?" She was exasperated—why was this man so fond of invading her personal space with that imposing body of his?
Did having a good figure make him feel invincible?
"Do you really want to stay Huo Qinglin's fiancée?" His icy gaze narrowed as he locked in on her, his tone sharp and unfriendly.
Lin Banxia blinked forcefully a few times. "Do I have any other choice? Huo Qinglin wants the pear garden from me, so he'll find a way to marry me, no matter what."
"The pear garden?" Huo Yanting let out a cold laugh.
Lin Banxia didn't like his tone, feeling annoyed. "Aren't you also planning to turn the pear garden into a commercial center? Let me make this clear—even if I die, I'd never sell that land to you. No matter how much money you offer, I'll say no."
"You've got guts!" Huo Yanting stared at her indignant expression and offered a rare compliment.
