Shen Roujia hurried to the scene, only to find a group of people deep in discussion.
“Imperial Physician Zhao, what exactly is going on?” she asked immediately.
Imperial Physician Zhao stroked his beard, clearly troubled.
“Your Highness, everyone was initially showing signs of improvement, but now, overnight, their conditions seem to have relapsed.”
“Especially those few,” he added, gesturing towards a group of rooms.
Shen Roujia followed his gaze to the rooms where the first patients had been housed. These were the people who had shown the best recovery and had been moved to the recovery rooms. But to everyone’s shock, Yu Zhu had died.
The other two patients were undoubtedly scared by this turn of events.
“What is the mental state of the remaining two?” Shen Roujia asked, addressing her first concern. If smallpox could cause death even in a state of recovery, it indicated something else was at play.
One of the physicians standing beside Imperial Physician Zhao spoke up, “Their condition is stable. They are no longer experiencing high fevers or coughing.”
Upon hearing this, Shen Roujia immediately ordered an inspection of the food they had eaten.
“There’s no need to panic just yet. It might not be that our treatment failed; there could be another reason,” she reassured everyone.
Shen Roujia then noticed a physician who had remained silent the entire time. “And who might this be?” she asked.
Imperial Physician Zhao glanced at the man and replied proudly, “This is my apprentice, Li Wei.”
Shen Roujia nodded slightly. “Imperial Physician Li, you’ve worked hard these past few days. I’ve hardly seen you around.”
Imperial Physician Zhao quickly explained, “Li Wei is very dedicated. He volunteered to come and help, arriving just yesterday.”
