Yong Gui opened his eyes and looked at A’Yue, who was smiling brightly in front of him. He shook his head slightly.
A’Yue pouted, “It’s really sweet! Are you afraid of sour things?”
Yong Gui furrowed his brow in confusion and glanced at the small red fruit clenched in her tiny hand.
“Why is a sour fruit sweet?”
A’Yue couldn’t answer and looked at the fruit in her hand. “But it’s called a sour fruit.”
She tossed the fruit into Yong Gui’s lap. “You’re so clueless, Young Monk.”
Yong Gui frowned, as if he had never learned how to smile. “Benefactor, you’ve been staying here for over a month. Aren’t your family worried about you?”
It sounded like Yong Gui was trying to send her away.
A’Yue’s expression suddenly fell, her lively eyes instantly welling up with tears.
“The Buddha is willing to take me in, and yet you want to drive me away!” 𝓷ℴ𝓿𝓹𝓾𝒷.𝓬𝓸𝓂
Yong Gui was puzzled. He couldn’t understand why he didn’t grasp a single thing this girl said.
“What?”
A’Yue scooted closer to Yong Gui, resting her chin on her hands as she sat beside him. “If I go back, I’ll get hurt. The Buddha showed me mercy by letting me meet you and saving my life. I must repay the Buddha, and I must repay you.”
Yong Gui shifted slightly away from her. “Benefactor, it was merely my duty.”
A’Yue spread her hands, “Then I’ll stay and repay the Buddha. After all, the Buddha is compassionate.”
Yong Gui, thinking she was just joking, closed his eyes and resumed chanting, ignoring her.
A’Yue observed him for a while, then left at some point without his noticing.
Only then did Yong Gui open his eyes and look at the red fruit. After hesitating for a moment, he bit into it.
The juice exploded on his taste buds—it really was sweet.
But why was the sour fruit sweet?
The days returned to their usual routine, with only one change: a new addition to that routine.
