Shen Roujia frowned even more deeply after hearing this.
“Even if there is something between me and Jia Shen, what does that have to do with me being asked to perform in the palace?”
Hua Zui shook her head helplessly. “You don’t understand, do you? Of all the people you could offend, you had to offend the Emperor. You may not know this, but Princess has taken a liking to that Master Jia Shen, and now you’re somehow entangled in this.”
“Nine times out of ten, she’s summoning you to the palace to give you a warning.”
Shen Roujia found the situation both laughable and exasperating, but there was no way to explain it now.
Gu Zhi, looking equally distressed, glanced at Hua Zui before turning anxiously to Shen Roujia. “Jiaojiao, if there’s no other way, I can step in and find that Master Jia Shen to clear things up. How could anyone think there’s something between you two?”
Hearing this, Shen Roujia felt utterly exasperated. She glanced at Hua Zui, then thanked her. “Thank you, but since the Emperor has sent an invitation, I have no way to refuse.”
She pulled Gu Zhi outside, and once they were far enough away, she couldn’t help but ask, “What’s the point of finding Jia Shen?”
Gu Zhi shook her head. “No, there’s definitely a misunderstanding here. How could you be competing with a princess over a man?”
Shen Roujia, exasperated, lightly slapped Gu Zhi’s arm and explained helplessly, “I am Jia Shen! How could I have an improper relationship with myself!”
Gu Zhi froze, then raised a finger to point at Shen Roujia in disbelief. “You’re way too bold!”
Shen Roujia quickly covered Gu Zhi’s mouth as her sudden outburst caused several passersby to glance their way.
