But nothing could change Shen Roujia’s resolve. “Xu Zening, I don’t know what you’re trying to do, but I want you to understand something—this will only make me resent you.”
As soon as she said this, Shen Roujia felt uncomfortable, even a bit worried that Xu Zening might get angry.
She cautiously observed his emotions, but to her surprise, he completely ignored her words, turning instead to introduce the place, “This is the spot with the best view.”
“You should rest for a while. I’ll arrange for some of your favorite dishes.”
Shen Roujia sighed, realizing that no matter what she said now, Xu Zening wouldn’t listen.
She asked softly, “And the others? The people who came with me?”
Xu Zening responded calmly, “Since they’re your friends, I’ll treat them well.”
Shen Roujia waved her hand dismissively. “If you won’t let me leave, at least let them go. I’ll write a letter for them to take to Gu Zhi, and they should be allowed to leave.”
Xu Zening seemed slightly displeased but agreed, “Alright.”
Feigning compliance, Shen Roujia sat down and said to Xu Zening, “What are you standing there for? Weren’t you going to take care of the food?”
Xu Zening appeared momentarily stunned by Shen Roujia’s sudden softness, then turned and stumbled out of the room.
As soon as he left, Shen Roujia returned to her usual expression and sighed deeply. “Let’s take it one step at a time and figure this out,” she muttered to herself.
