It felt as though it would be wrong if Xu Zening didn’t believe her. Shen Roujia wasn’t sure what Xu Zening was thinking, but even she felt that her tone sounded forced and insincere.
She didn’t show it outwardly, but her small foot subtly moved backward.
Shen Roujia responded with a soft “Hmm,” then said slowly, “Let’s leave it at that for now. You should go ahead and take care of your tasks. Xiao Fu can handle the rest.”
Xu Zening nodded and then said to Shen Roujia, “The wedding is in three days. I still hope you can give your heart to me completely. I don’t want to hear any more lies.”
As soon as Xu Zening said this, Shen Roujia felt that his smile was a bit sinister, but it quickly faded into his usual gentle expression.
It was as if the previous feeling had just been a trick of her mind. Shen Roujia didn’t let her emotions show too clearly.
However, Xu Zening now felt entirely different to Shen Roujia—no longer like the gentle lamb he once appeared to be, but rather a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Shen Roujia wondered if she had been mistaken in her previous assessments because she hadn’t really observed Xu Zening closely before. Now, she found this new version of him somewhat disturbing.
Shen Roujia wasn’t a monster, but Xu Zening felt like one. He was no longer the docile person she had thought he was; he was no longer easily fooled.
Although Xu Zening might not know exactly what Shen Roujia was planning, he certainly wouldn’t admit that he knew she was thinking of escaping.
Shen Roujia watched obediently as Xu Zening left, only then allowing herself to relax as if a heavy burden had been lifted.
She felt an unprecedented exhaustion. Shen Roujia didn’t think Xu Zening was a bad person; in fact, he had treated her with utmost kindness, repaying a past debt with more than enough.
But he had also fallen for the current Shen Roujia.
And wasn’t that initial kindness the root of everything?
Shen Roujia hadn’t been the one who bestowed that kindness, so bearing the weight of these emotions made her anxious.
She felt too guilty.
