Chapter 144: _ Sweet Man
With a quiet sigh, I slipped out of the room and padded towards the kitchen, the faint glow of the morning light filtering through the windows. I could smell and sense Gamma Rhett with every step I took and I didn’t quite blame myself for it.
I had just had a very crazy dream that did nothing but remind me of him, so smelling him wasn’t strange after waking up from it.
Kylo had told us Gamma Rhett wouldn’t be returning home in days since the attack would take most of his time. I tried to hum to take my mind off of thinking about him.
But as I rounded the corner into the living room, I froze.
There, in the center of the room, stood Gamma Rhett. He was still clad in the same outfit as from the battle, filled with a mixture of grime and dried blood clinging to the leather and fabric.
His broad shoulders were tense and his expression was nothing short of shock. His eyes darted around the room and then landed squarely on me.
Their shock mirrored my own. My breath hitched in my throat as his gaze lingered on the soft fabric of my nightgown, tracing the exposed skin of my arms and legs. His jaw clenched, and a faint flush crept up his neck.
Kylo, so much for being so sure your dad wasn’t coming home anytime soon.
I didn’t know what to do or say. I was literally caught off guard and so was Gamma Rhett. None of us was prepared for what was before us.
He probably had a million questions in his head. I could see the questions in his eyes. Knowing a man like him, he wouldn’t appreciate the company of outsiders in his home, I was sure.
It felt like an eternity before Rhett finally spoke. I didn’t know if it was exhaustion but his voice was hoarse and rough, tingling my insides.
"Isleen?" he called, his gaze flickering away from my exposed skin for a fleeting moment before returning. "How do you feel now?"
W–what the hell?
What was this man exactly? He clearly was beyond stunned to find me in his house but instead of asking what I was doing there, he wanted to know about my health first.
Tell me, if it were some other girl, wouldn’t they have fallen for this man as easily as I was? He was so cold, so mean, and yet, so passionate, affectionate, and caring.
Matter of fact, I didn’t think there was anyone who cared for this pack as much as he did. Every time he was like this, I understood where Kylo got his consideration blood from.
He seemed to sense my confusion. He ran a hand through his sweat-dampened hair, the gesture revealing a glimpse of vulnerability beneath his hardened exterior. "The attack," he clarified, his voice tight. "You were injured."
Why was he pointing that out like I didn’t know? To be frank, Gamma Rhett was so soft. Too soft that he could only be cold. If that made any sense.
"Injured?" I scoffed. "Compared to what the pack has faced, my injuries are nothing. And thanks to you, Aceco treated me on time despite the disapproval of the pack."
Rhett’s jaw clenched again. He ignored my gratitude. "No injury is insignificant," he countered. "Especially not yours." His gaze softened for a fleeting moment and I saw a flicker of concern that sent a jolt through me.
Especially not mine?
Why on earth was this man so sweet?
"I— I’m fine anyway. Thanks for saving me earlier." I said, already toying with the hem of my top, unsure of what to do or say anymore.
Rhett’s head tilted and I saw a mischievous smirk faint on the corner of his mouth. "What if I want to be thanked in other ways?" He sneered.
Thank him any other way? Pipe me, this man would be the end of me!
"I— I mean. W–what ways?" I stuttered, hating myself for letting him have such a hold on me yet again.
Rhett saw how clumsy the words were stumbling out of my mouth. He began to chuckle, albeit not too loud. "Where— how did you get here?" He finally asked what I’d expect him to ask from the onset.
The question, simple as it was, felt loaded in the charged atmosphere. I could only stare back at him, unsure if I was to explain that coming here was Kylo’s idea as he thought his father wouldn’t return him for a while.
"I— I came here with Lupe," I stammered finally.
Then, I remembered I didn’t come here with Lupe alone. "And Cullen."
Oh, gosh. I came here with everyone. "And Liam too." I finally finished, pinching my fingers in apprehension.
"We needed a place to stay after the attack." I quickly added when I realized my answers didn’t quite fit his response.
Rhett’s gaze dropped to his hand which was clenched tightly around the handle of his suitcase. "If I must guess, this was Kylo’s idea?"
Oh, geez. Weren’t we about to put Kylo in trouble?
I gulped down, praying to the Moon Goddess to show some mercy. "Y— yes. But he was only trying to be nice. Our houses are all burnt down. We didn’t have anywhere else to go. We..." I tried to find so many explanations to limit Kylo’s sentence when his father silenced me.
With a finger on his mouth, "Shhh..." He hushed me and I swallowed my words.
The next thing I knew, he dropped the suitcase carefully on the center table and began to advance towards me. Worse, he locked his gaze unwaveringly on mine.
"If this was Kylo’s idea..." He began. "...then I should give my son a pat on the head. Because, Isleen, this is a pleasant surprise."
P–pleasant surprise?
He wasn’t mad that er had invaded his privacy?
Was this the typical Gamma Rhett everyone knew or was the mate bond changing him too? This man, this stoic and strict man seemed to be softening up to me.
Oh. My. God.
