Chapter 185: Patience
Rhett
~~
After Isleen and Kylo left the precinct, Rhett buried himself in thought.
Isleen had made him seem like the bad guy, enlisting their people, including his son, to go to war. But she wouldn’t understand.
This was war. Hard decisions had to be made in other to ensure their survival as a pack.
He’d reminded Isleen of their arranged meeting later tonight, and she’d hastily agreed to meet up by 8. He, however, felt her hesitation. He felt her growing disinterest too and it made him grit his teeth with frustration. This Liam case had taken away his mate’s happiness. It’d taken away her trust in him too. He had to solve it once and for all.
Suddenly, there was a knock on his door, drawing Rhett out of his thoughts.
"Come in," Rhett grunted, rubbing his temples.
And as expected, Farkas walked in, a curious gaze in his eyes. Rhett arched an eyebrow at him, before speaking with a sarcastic tone. "Look who finally decided to knock today. What’s the occasion, Farkas?"
Farkas rolled his eyes before taking a seat. "Funny. But, I was trying to avoid bumping into Alpha Beowulf and his Beta bitch." After saying that, Farkas turned to Rhett, his voice brimming with curiosity. "Speaking of which, how did the meeting go?"
Rhett sighed, before relaying everything he’d shared with the Alpha and Beta to Farkas. Then, he brought him up to speed about Liam’s case and the enlistment program. After all that, Farkas groaned, rubbing his face.
"I shouldn’t have had so much to drink last night." He muttered under his breath, causing Rhett to crease his brows.
Farkas did what? So that’s why he didn’t show up early today? But why?
Rhett cleared his throat, trying to sound neutral. "Farkas, what happened to you? Why would you let yourself get so carried away that you’d drink so much? Is this because of the losses we sustained during the attack?"
Farkas turned his head away from Rhett with shame in his eyes, making him realize that he’d been right. Farkas still carried the guilt and grief of losing Alistair and all the other soldiers during the battle.
Farkas was a very reputable man, who always took his job seriously. That was why he’d vouched for him to become the military advisor a long time ago. Seeing him let himself go because of something which was honestly beyond any of their control, made Rhett question their loyalty to the Alpha.
"You wouldn’t understand, Gamma." Farkas chuckled bitterly, "And to think even after everything, you’re still relating our plans with that useless Alpha."
"Language, Farkas." Rhett pointed a warning finger at Farkas. "He’s still our Alpha at the end of the day. Don’t incur the Moon goddess’ wrath on yourself."
With a scoff, Farkas allowed himself to calm down. The two discussed some more, with Rhett deciding they’d announce the enlistment first tonight, then again tomorrow morning. Farkas sent a soldier to a TV station for advertising, giving him information on the enlistment program. Then, when the soldier went out, Rhett relayed something he’d forgotten to mention.
"The Beta will be joining me to oversee the civilians enlisted into our military." Rhett let out a sigh, silently cursing his bad luck.
Instead of joining him in his frustration, Farkas let out an amused laugh. "Oh dear, it seems you have your work cut off for you, Rhett. Working with Darius is beyond burdening."
Yeah, no shit Sherlock...
Rhett decided to confide in his friend. "I don’t know, Farkas. Calling the man a burden is a gross understatement. The man is a bane of my existence. He’s childish, immature and brash. Do you remember how he almost ruined our investigations with the fey after the first attack?"
If Farkas didn’t remember, Rhett did all too well. He was a very reserved man who tried to avoid conflict as much as possible. But Darius...he knew how to test his limits.
Rhett couldn’t count the number of times in their meeting just now that he’d wished he could just break his jaw with a punch.
"I understand your frustrations, Rhett. Trust me." Farkas shook his head. "But remember, you said we should respect our Alpha. This is the Alpha’s wish and you have to comply with them, Rhett. You have to learn how to endure Darius’s presence from now on."
Rhett clicked his tongue. "Using my advice against me, eh?"
Farkas couldn’t help chuckling again, causing Rhett to smile slightly to himself. He was glad that the man hadn’t let himself fall too deep Into his grief. He just prayed that Farkas would have a clear head for the days to come.
"Anyway, back to your son’s girlfriend and her relationship with our suspected vampire." Farkas suddenly changed the topic, looking more serious now. That’s the spirit! "What was she doing here? Did she have any leads? When will we go burst that monster?"
Rhett could only sigh. That was another thing he’d forgotten to tell Farkas. "That’s the thing though, Farkas. Liam is...missing. Miss Gracia came in today to file in a missing case."
Farkas’ eyes shone with shock, as he leaned in closer. "The vampire is missing? Holy moonlight, this is bad! Really bad."
Rhett frowned, hushing Farkas hastily. "Calm down, Farkas. We can’t let too many people know about this." After seeing Farkas calm down, Rhett continued. "The vampire can shapeshift by eating the flesh of his victims. But apart from that, he’s also a skilled manipulator and managed to stay hidden and unsuspected all this while. We have to be smart if we want to find him, but also patient."
Farkas nearly snapped. "Patient? He’s a sadistic killer. How patient do we have to continue being before this monster kills even more innocent people?"
Rhett gritted his teeth. He understood Farkas’s concerns, but they had no other choice. A full-blown investigation would only alert the vampire that they knew of his existence, and he’d put extra effort into keeping himself hidden, making it harder for the military to fish him out.
"It’s the logical thing to do, Farkas." Rhett finally said. "Sooner or later, he’ll find another victim and steal their flesh to continue hiding in plain sight, that’s if he hasn’t done so already. We’ll increase patrols in the forest. If we’re able to find any buried bones, we’ll be able to fish him out easier."
Rhett knew what he was doing. Sooner or later, they’d be able to find out just who their mysterious killer was. A patient dog, they say, eats the fattest bone.
