Chapter 187: Rejecting What They’d Done

He had to take them to the hotel. They reached there with his car and once in the room, he’d noticed her hesitation on seeing that the room had two beds. But he’d done that on purpose. For her.
He secretly hoped that something happened that night between them, but he didn’t want to force it. Moon goddess knew he wouldn’t be able to control himself if they slept on the same bed that night. He didn’t want Isleen to be more nervous, but somehow, she beat all his expectations.
Not only did she sit on the same bed as him, but she made the first move, taking the lead by kissing him. His wolf growled inside him, telling him to take her without holding back, but he still held back. He knew Isleen had been through a lot, especially after finding out the truth about Liam.
He had felt her despondency. He’d felt her guilt back in his office when he’d shared the news. But somehow, she managed to mask her emotions well and didn’t overreact like he’d expected.
Something was off with his mate’s emotional state. He couldn’t help feeling like she wanted to force the sex to distract herself, from the pain, from actually having to face her problems. She was running away from her emotions and if she didn’t go back to them quickly, it could all come crashing on her, overwhelming her eventually.
Before he could worry about her more, however, Isleen made it harder for him to resist her. She was beautiful, that was undeniable. She was so confident of herself, and of him too. Soon, he couldn’t hold back and gave in to his desires. He couldn’t resist her no matter how much he tried.
Their bodies were entwined in a brash dance. Skin against skin. Hip against hip. Lips against lips. And then when he bit her again, feeling her shiver with pleasure under his hold and groan his name, it only made his wolf go wilder. Until he couldn’t take the heat anymore, and with an urgency that surprised even himself, he went inside her.
When he finally got inside her, the bliss felt like heaven.
With every thrust, he felt his pleasure getting to the brink, ready to explode. Her moans were like fuel, driving him to go in deeper, faster, harder.
She shook. She pleaded for him to do more. She cursed. She cried. She laughed. She moaned his name. The experience brought out so many emotions from her which he was sure she wasn’t even noticing. And he felt something more while he was lost in the moment.
He felt the need to protect her. He felt like shielding her from whatever problems were coming her way. He WANTED to protect her. If any problems came her way, he would protect her.
It was his duty. He’d marked her not once but twice that night. She was his and he was hers, whether she liked it or not. He would take his duty more seriously. Place more attention on her.
Finally, when they both reached a climax, he exploded for the first time in years. He experienced the pleasure of making love with someone and letting himself feel vulnerable for the first time in years. And it wasn’t just with anyone. It was with his mate.
They’d taken the next step in their relationship and it got him excited. He would find the right time to announce their relationship, even if Isleen didn’t agree to it. He was tired of hiding, tired of feeling like what they were doing was some forbidden sin. Damn what people would think about them. The only thing that mattered was that the relationship had the moon goddess’ blessings.
After their night of passion, Rhett felt a shift in Isleen’s countenance. She was a bit withdrawn...a bit more like the Isleen he knew. But he let himself laugh around her. He held her close and didn’t let go until she slept under his watch. Eventually, he slept off too, the events of that night ingrained in his mind...
.
.
Rhett turned when he reached out to touch his mate and she wasn’t there. He snapped his eyes open, sitting up. But then he sighed with relief when he saw her standing in front of the mirror, preparing to leave.
"Not even a ’good morning’ before leaving?" Rhett stretched on the bed, his gaze lingering on Isleen. He noticed how tensed up she was, from the way she moved around to get her things, to how she tried avoiding eye contact with him.
What was the meaning of this? Why was Isleen acting completely different from how she’d been last night? He suspected foul play here but kept silent about it.
Isleen barely shot him a glance, managing to smile at him. "Good morning, Rhett."
Rhett creased his brow and got up. He was still naked but didn’t care, as he walked towards his mate. He tilted his head when he saw her averting her gaze, as she turned red with embarrassment.
"Gamma Rhett, y – you’re naked." She gasped, pointing out the obvious.
He chuckled softly, as he gently brushed the strands of her hair with his hands. Then, he whispered into her ears. "Yes, silly little omega. You saw me naked last night, or have you forgotten so soon? And besides, I told you, you don’t have to call me by my title when we’re alone."
Just then, his eyes landed on her neck. The renewed mate mark from last night was obvious, red, and almost throbbing. He couldn’t help the sense of pride and ownership that came with marking her not once but twice in one night. But he also couldn’t help wondering if Isleen felt the same.
"How do you feel?" Rhett had to ask. He needed to know if Isleen felt the same way about what they’d done.
She seemed lost in thought, her expression a disoriented mixture of confusion and embarrassment. But soon, she raised her head.
Were those tears he saw in her eyes?
"I – I don’t think I know what to feel, Rhett." Isleen blurted out, her voice barely above a whisper, shaking with regret.
Rhett squinted his eyes, becoming just as confused as her if not more. Where was this coming from?
"Isleen, what are you saying?" He threaded lightly, clenching his jaw to contain his emotions.
Her breath increased as she shut her eyes as if that would make what she was about to say easier. Then, with a tone brimming with uncertainty, she spoke again. "I don’t know. I don’t know what came over me last night. I feel like—like it was a mistake."
When she opened her eyes, Rhett saw her tears pouring out like a dam, unable to hold in its waters anymore. He frowned.
"We mated, Isleen. I’ve marked you three times now. Don’t you think it’s a little too late to feel remorseful about it? Remember, you’re the one who pushed for it." He couldn’t help sounding a little stern now. Was everything he’d felt all this while from her a facade? Didn’t she want to sleep with him?
He didn’t wait for her to reply to his words as he got closer to her. Then without warning, he locked lips with her, a desperate move to remind her of all they’d done the previous night. And for a moment, he felt her walls crumble, as she let herself go with the kiss.
But soon, she shoved him away, looking hurt. She covered her mouth, shaking her head as even more tears trailed down her face. The sight sent a sharp pain in Rhett’s chest.
"I’m sorry." Isleen choked out. Before Rhett could grab her, she ran for the door and shut it hastily behind her.
Rhett stood there alone, feeling a chilling cold enveloping his
naked body. Isleen...
She’d — did she just reject what they’d done?
