Chapter 199: Speak Of The Devil

I know what I’d sensed. I couldn’t be insane. I’d sensed that vampire and it’d been moving around the house like it owned the place.

The only reason I was telling Kylo now was because I was scared. What if, this vampire starts coming for those I loved one by one? What If he came for me?

All these thoughts went past my head with bone-chilling detail as I watched Kylo’s reaction to the news. His face scrunched up into a frown, and his eyes looked like he was deep in thought. "For once, I think you might be on to something."

I frowned, almost yelling out. "What do you mean, ’for once’? My special ability never fails me when it’s activated."

I felt insulted. My ability wasn’t something I shared openly with other people. It was mostly a secret, which was passed down in the DNA of those in my bloodline. My parents, being one of them...

"Fine, forgive me." Kylo waved his hands dismissively with a mutter, before going back to the main problem. "I believe you. The problem is, what could the vampire have possibly come here for? It didn’t kill you. I don’t think it’s gone for Cullen either. But..." He paused, his eyes contorting into a frown, as he seemed like he’d remembered something.

"Now that I think about it, I remember smelling a strong scent of wolf’s blood yesterday. It seemed to be coming from within the house." He spoke with an absentminded tone, his eyes looking more and more shocked as the seconds passed.

I didn’t know when I opened my mouth In shock upon hearing Kylo’s revelation. Wolf blood? A vampire couldn’t drink a werewolf’s blood, but according to Gamma Rhett, this special one roaming around the pack could.

If Kylo had smelt wolf blood the other time, could it mean...?

"Hey, do you think the vampire killed someone or worse, took their skin, and then got into the house, allowing me to smell the blood on him?" Kylo suddenly spoke out something I was already pondering myself.

I couldn’t even think properly. The fact that we were bothering ourselves with this was so overwhelming. I creased my brows, concentrating hard to think, but my mind was a mess. Maybe I needed some rest. Or maybe, I needed closure...

"I don’t know, Kylo. What I do know is that, if anyone captures him, reserve his life so I can talk to him." I suddenly asked Kylo, struggling to blink back a tear.

I felt like I needed to speak to ’Liam’, one last time, even if he was only a vampire. Even though he never really was my son. I wanted to experience that feeling of motherhood one last time.

Kylo struggled to say something at first, but then eventually smiled, placing a palm on my shoulder. "If you say so. Let’s just hope Dad catches it on time. And let’s just hope the rest of us remain safe until that happens."

With that, Kylo stuck around a little longer, talking about other stuff. He didn’t want to leave me yet. He didn’t want me to be alone in the house. But eventually, he had to leave to catch up with the screening for the enlistment.

I was left all alone again, but this time, I had my thoughts set on different things. Kylo’s revelation of smelling wolf blood in the house made me worry but also feel sorry for the wolf that was killed by the vampire already.

Who was next? Why did the vampire come back? Was it targeting me, or someone else?

As I sat in the living room pondering all this, I didn’t take note of the time. Just then, Cullen walked in, a wide grin etched on his face.

"I got in. I was honestly a bit surprised that it happened so easily too." He beamed proudly, sitting on one of the sofas.

I frowned, feeling my blood boil with anger. Cullen was nothing but a back-biting snake! And I needed to call him out for his bullshit, especially after I shared them with Kylo.

So, taking a deep breath, I spoke with a calm voice to him, trying hard to not just yell out my thoughts. "Hey, Cullen. I wanted to ask you something. What do you think a ’secret’ means? Cause, whenever I share something about myself with you In good faith, I expect that you keep it to yourself. As a secret."

I watched him, looking for a reaction. He arched an eyebrow, swerving his head to me. Then, he asked with a worried tone. "Babes, are you okay? What secret are you talking about?" He threw his arms listlessly until realization dawned on his face, his eyes bulging with surprise. "Oh, is it the one about Gamma Rhett being your mate? And that the two of you danced the ’devil’s tango’ for the first time? If it is, then don’t worry. Your weird ass secret is safe with me. I rarely talk with people in the pack in the fi–"

"I’m not talking about people In the pack, Cullen." My tone became sterner now. "I’m talking about Kylo! For the love of the Moon, leave me out of your weird drama with my ex. I’m content with us being just friends, and you’re ruining that by trying to dig out dirt about me. Kylo is yours, you have my blessings." I paused after the last part but waited to see Cullen’s reaction.

He looked on at me, his mouth curving into an amused smirk. But then he shrugged, speaking with a carefree tone. "Oh, relax. I never wanted to dig dirt on you. Besides, Kylo only sent me to watch you because he was worried about you. You’ve captivated him more than I ever could, Isleen."

I felt my cheeks flush at those words, but my gaze remained unwavering.

"Spare me the half-baked compliments, Cullen. You’ve been warned. This ain’t our old house where you could lay lazily around after work, gossiping with me. This is the Gamma’s house. Stop acting like a child unless you want to be thrown out." I finalized, my voice carrying a promise for my words.

He creased his brows, about to say something when the doorbell rang. We both turned our attention in that direction, and I felt my heartbeat increase.

I could smell him. I could sense him, right at the other side of the door. And as usual, I felt my wolf coming to life in his presence.

Speak of the devil, and he’d appear.
