Chapter 224: I Love You

It has been two weeks since Lupe died. Rhett’s house had been cleared and I was allowed to move in. It felt lonely. It WAS lonely.

My days were just filled with waking up in the morning, going to work, getting back, eating, sleeping... Then rinse and repeat. My weekends were even more boring, and I couldn’t help missing Kylo and Cullen’s presence sometimes.

But despite all this, the trauma only brought Rhett closer to me. And let’s just say... We’ve been getting even more intimate.

Argh, yeah, we’d had sex at least three times these past two weeks. And trust me when I said... it was good! The man knew how to please a woman, for real. I found it hard to believe that he’d been married only once. To an old woman at that.

He always found time to move away from the camp and visit me all the way here. And today happened to be one of those days.

The doorbell rang and I scurried out of my room to answer it. My wolf could already pick up his presence and was growling with a longing that made even me excited. He’d promised to visit today after I was done with work and it seemed he was a man of his word.

"Hey." I greeted when I opened the door, meeting Rhett standing there looking all dashing. He had a bright smile on his face and wore a long coat over a white long-sleeve shirt.

"Good evening, Isleen." He replied, taking my hand and kissing it.

My face flushed instantly as my eyes darted around. The man had no care about what other people thought. And while I found that admirable, we were not out to the pack yet.

"May I come in?" He suddenly asked, snapping me out of my thoughts.

I couldn’t help rolling my eyes before stepping aside. "You know it’s your house, right? I don’t get why you keep knocking each time you come here."

His closeness made my wolf go wild, and the scent of his cologne made my insides burn with desire. It’s been days since our last meeting.

He walked in, his hands hidden behind his back. Whatever it was he had hidden there, he sure did a great job not allowing me to see it.

He didn’t respond to my remark, but instead, showed me what was in his hands.

I couldn’t help gasping, my hands going to my mouth in shock. Was... Did he really...?

"It’s a necklace." He stated the obvious when he noticed my bewilderment. "It–I gave it to my late wife a long time ago before... Before she died. I’ve kept it away ever since, and I’ve never shown it to anyone else. Not even Kylo knows about it."

I nodded slowly as I scrutinized the trinket. It was placed inside a black locket and was golden. The most peculiar thing about it, however, was the crescent moon-shaped pendant on it. It glimmered with a silver shine as if it were calling on me to wear it.

I couldn’t help getting emotional as my eyes welled up with tears. This was the first time Rhett ever gave me a gift. And it was not just any gift... It was a necklace that belonged to someone he’d had his only child with.

It was obvious to read the meaning behind that. He didn’t have to spell it out to me that he loved me. He didn’t need to pop out a diamond ring in some grand public proposal. This was more than enough.

Right here in this house, with only each other to lean on. We didn’t need anything else to make this moment close to perfection.

Oh, Isleen, you really hit the jackpot when it came to mates! And to think we’d both loathed each other for so long before actually meeting.

"It’s... It’s beautiful, Rhett." I was finally able to mumble after spacing out for moon knows how long.

His gaze fleeted down my body, from my head to my bare feet and then back to my face again.

His lips curved into a smirk as he beckoned on me. "Well, don’t just stand there. Come try it on."

I felt oddly nervous but walked up to him. I turned around, parting my hair slowly to give him a view of my neck. He placed his palms there... Those strong, firm palms held so much warmth in them.

Then, he slowly placed the necklace around my neck, the cold metal of it a contrast to the warmth of Rhett’s breath behind me.

When he’d hooked it around my neck, he turned me around to face him, a proud smile etched on his face.

"There... A beautiful necklace, for an even more beautiful girl." He gave me a wink, causing my cheeks to flush with heat as I tried desperately to avoid his gaze.

However, he didn’t let me but instead placed his fingers gently on my jaw, before bringing my gaze to meet his. His eyes glimmered under the lights in the living room, as a knowing smile crept up his face.

"I– I love you, Isleen." He finally uttered after what felt like an eternity.

My heart leaped into my throat as I gulped. He said what?! He... He’s never said those words before. He’d never even tried to allude to them.

Isleen Gracia, wake up. This was just a dream. It HAD to be a dream... Right?

Noticing my distress, a deep frown appeared on his face as he rushed to ask. "Are you okay? Don’t you love me too? I mean... It’s okay if you–"

Before whatever it was he was trying to say left his mouth, I went on my tippy toes, my lips meeting his in a fiery kiss. My right hand went to his head, grabbing it tenderly, while the left went to his shoulder, squeezing it and tracing up his muscles.

He returned the kiss with even more longing, his hands going to my waist and drawing me closer to his chest. We kissed for what felt like forever, our tongues colliding and our mouths puckering against each other.

But eventually, I pulled away, speaking breathlessly. "Of... Of course I love you, you overbearing workaholic! Wasn’t it obvious all this while?"

Gosh, we really needed to work on our communication skills as a couple.

He grinned, before bursting into laughter. His laugh was contagious as I joined him, giggling to my heart’s content. He drew me into an embrace, his arms holding me close.

I could hear his heart beating erratically like he’d been nervous. The poor man!

Just then, he pulled me out of the embrace, placing his palms on my shoulders. He looked into my eyes, while his burnt with an intensity that drew me in like a moth to a fireplace.

I knew that look all too well. Not wasting any more time, he kissed me, this time more passionately than last time. His hands traced every corner of my body under the blue dress I wore, before lifting me.

Yup... Things were about to get steamy at the Gamma’s house.
