Chapter 231: Betrayed By The People He Loved
Cullen gave Osmond one final look before stepping away.
Kylo was getting frustrated. For the moon’s sake, they were supposed to be a team!
Osmond had a wide grin on his face before he picked up the bag. "Woah. This thing is heavier than it looks." He blinked awkwardly as he strapped it to his back.
They all watched as the older wolf walked up to the starting line alongside other representatives of each team. They positioned themselves at the line, waiting for Rhett’s mark.
"One last thing." Gamma Rhett suddenly blurted, his voice stern. "For fairies, no wings or magic allowed. The same goes for elves using magic. Also, no pushing or playing rough. Anyone who breaks any of these rules shall have their whole team eliminated from the exercise."
The enlisted soldiers murmured among themselves while Kylo remained indifferent. Or at least, he tried to seem indifferent.
His gaze was intense on his father, as he watched him looking down on all of them. He knew that look all too well. It was a look that told him that no matter what any of them did, it would not be good enough before the Gamma’s eyes.
Hmph! He’ll show him. He’ll show him how wrong he was about him.
Just then, Gamma Rhett cleared his throat. "On my mark!" As he said that, all the representatives leaned forward, preparing themselves for the race. "Get set... Go!"
As soon as those words left the Gamma’s mouth, the representatives took off, running like their lives depended on it. Kylo and the others stood behind the starting line, preparing themselves to pick up the bags from their teammates when they ran back.
"So, who’s going next?" Celest asked meekly. He didn’t seem eager to be doing any of this.
"I’ll go." Cullen raised his hand with a smirk. Unlike the fairy, he seemed pretty excited to be doing this.
Which seemed weird since he was... Well, Cullen.
Kylo simply nodded in agreement before glancing at his father. His old man stood there on the stage, oblivious of his gaze or existence as he whispered something to Aceco.
They seemed to be having an important discussion.
The man had always been this way. Right from his childhood. For as long as he could remember, he’d focused most of his attention on his work while neglecting him.
Kylo never had a mother he could lean on whenever he felt unloved. He didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. How many people could be friends with the Gamma’s son anyway, when his father monitored his life like a hawk?
That was until he met Isleen. The first person he ever truly loved. It’d been crazy at first since they weren’t mates, but he had wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He loved her, even after he broke up with her to shield her from the harsh judgment of the pack members.
And now? He’d found out that she’d been cheating on him way before they even broke up. With his father!
They’d both hidden it away from him for so long and he’d played the fool in their silly little games.
No wonder his father seemed cool with the idea of her staying at his place. He’d expected to argue with him before finally getting him to agree to it, but none of that happened.
Who knows if he’d been sleeping with her under his roof?
He clenched his fists, his jaw grounding with hatred. They’d both betrayed him. The two people he loved the most more than anyone else, had betrayed him. And now he felt like he could no longer trust anyone anymore.
"Hey, relax." Cullen suddenly whispered to Kylo, snapping him out of his thoughts as he clutched his shoulder seemingly in reassurance. "You’ll show him just what you’re made of soon enough."
The way he said that felt ominous. The sinister smile that flashed past Cullen’s face made Kylo feel uneasy. He felt like he was supposed to remember something. Something important that his father had shared with him.
But right now, his mind was a mess and he couldn’t connect any dots.
With their superior wolf vision, they were able to follow the race for quite a while. Osmond seemed to be struggling but had managed to run past several people, as they ran past lines of tall trees.
The fey, however, were at a disadvantage. The wolves were both faster and stronger. While fey had a slightly better physique than humans, their only true advantage was their magic and wings for fairies. 𝓃𝓸𝓋𝓅𝓾𝒷.𝒸ℴ𝓂
And now they weren’t allowed to use either.
"I don’t think I can do this," Celest muttered nervously, his voice getting shaky.
Kylo glanced at Cullen who simply shrugged. This was bad. They needed to get the young fairy’s head in the game.
"Celest, buddy, don’t worry." Kylo tapped the young chap on the back, smiling reassuringly. "That’s why it’s a group race. If you’re not able to run fast enough, the rest of us will take over from you and give us a higher lead."
When it seemed like Celest was still nervous, Kylo added. "Alright, you’ll go after Cullen. I’ll go last, so I’ll be able to fill in any gaps, okay? As long as you participate, you’ll be good."
The fairy finally took in a deep breath before sighing, a grateful smile stretching across his face. "Thank you, brother Kylo. You have such a kind heart."
Kind heart? Now, where did this guy get that idea from?
Just then, Osmond and the other representatives reached the line at the other end of the camp and then ran back. The other enlisted soldiers were busy cheering on their teammates while preparing themselves to take the bags from them.
"Celest, my dude." Cullen suddenly placed his arms around Kylo’s shoulder while giving Celest a playful look. "Watch and learn."
Soon enough, the representatives started reaching them one by one. Osmond came in eighth, panting with a grin as he flung the bag to Cullen.
"You think you can handle it, snowflake?" The older wolf sniggered as he tried to catch his breath.
Cullen ignored his remark as he put on the bag with no stress. He glanced over his shoulder, giving Osmond a disdainful look. "Just take a break, Grandpa. You’ll need it."
Kylo’s eyes widened as he swerved to face Osmond. He had a smile on his face, but underneath it, his jaw was clenching way too obviously.
Without another word, Cullen sprinted forward, leaving behind some other representatives who were still struggling to take the bags away from their teammates.
Kylo blinked erratically. He couldn’t believe his eyes.
