Chapter 250: Act Fool
Fergus... that didn’t ring any bells. But at least, now we had a name for the killer. I was tired of calling him ’Cullen’, especially now that we’ve confirmed that he’s not him.
"Okay, so we know that he’s the vampire now. What else are we waiting for?" I asked cluelessly.
However, Rhett gave me a look that shut me up just then. What was I thinking?
Aceco was trying not to have a breakdown, and here I was, already thinking about how to bring down the vampire.
I turned to face her, placing my palm on her shoulder just like Rhett. "You can take a break from here, Aceco. Thank you so much for everything, you’ve been more than helpful."
The fairy healer chuckled softly, a glimmer of a smile managing to creep up her face as she waved off my gratitude. "There’s no need for that, Isleen. I’m simply making myself useful." She paused, turning to face Rhett. "I’ll trust you to handle everything else from here. Keep tabs on Fergus before he steals someone else’s form and until you can kill him."
It was the first time that I ever heard Aceco sound so decisive on the idea of killing. I was curious about what she’d seen through the dagger, but now I wasn’t so sure if I wanted to see it.
I’d been traumatized enough.
Aceco drew In a deep breath before speaking again. "I’ll still stick around until the fairy Queen takes her leave. It’s been a while since I visited Enchantee... maybe I’ll ask her to take me there." Her face brightened up with a radiant smile as she talked about the territory of the fey.
I’d only ever heard stories about the territory of the fey. A place where all life was respected, no matter how little. Where all creatures lived in perfect harmony.
That was before the vampires began their attack on all races anyway. Now the place was almost desolate, thanks to the attacks made by the vampires there.
"No worries; we really appreciate your help, Aceco." Rhett nodded curtly at her.
With that, Aceco walked toward the Alpha’s house, leaving Rhett and me behind.
"So..." my voice trailed off as I turned my gaze to him. "Now what?"
He sighed deeply before glancing at me. "Now, we keep our distance while watching this... Fergus, discreetly. Don’t give him a reason to think you’re suspicious of him. We’ll come up with a way to lure him out and if possible, kill him. I don’t think there’s any need beating around the bush anyway, I doubt someone like him would be willing to give us any information on the vampire Lord even if we tortured him."
I nodded my understanding. I didn’t feel safe anymore in Rhett’s house, but I had no choice. I had to play along... for now at least.
"I should be heading back to join the rest for our meeting." He suddenly said as he placed both palms on my shoulders. "Stay safe, alright? And don’t hesitate to call me if anything happens. If Fergus even makes one move out of line, just give me a call and I’ll be there with the speed of light."
I smiled wryly before wrapping my arms around him in a hug. He did the same and we both stood there silently, delighting in the solace brought from being in each other’s arms.
We pulled away after a while and looked into each other’s eyes. It was then that I saw all the calm he’d kept while speaking with the fairy Queen and the others evaporate like boiling water.
In his eyes now was vulnerability, fear, and worry. He was worried about me, now more than ever.
I placed my hand on his cheek and damned it all as I leaned in to kiss him. When our lips met, it felt like a spark of energy surged through me, bringing my heart to ease.
The strong scent of his cologne felt faint as the strong taste of his saliva overwhelmed my senses. His arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me closer to him as our kissing intensified.
I could feel the pack soldiers staring at us discreetly, but I didn’t care. Rhett had confessed that we were mates in the presence of the Alpha himself. At this point, I didn’t mind if the entire pack was made aware of our relationship.
Eventually, Rhett removed his lips from mine, staring me in the eyes again. "I’ll see you some other time, okay?"
I nodded and with that, he turned and left, leaving me alone in the night. I drew in a deep breath before waltzing toward the gate. As I made my way back to Rhett’s house, my mind went through so many scenarios.
What exactly was this... ’Fergus’s’ deal with Kylo? Had he corrupted him against me? What was his ultimate goal and how did I come in? Why hadn’t he killed me yet?
When I finally got back to the busy parts of the pack, I sighed as I let myself blend into the bustling of the people. Soon enough, I arrived at Rhett’s house and stepped inside with a click of the door.
The living room was dark and eerily quiet. It seemed someone had turned the lights off, but I had this feeling that someone was home.
"Hello?" I called out, turning my head around as I found my way to the light switch. "Is anyone home?"
When I turned it on, however, I received the shock of my life when I could finally see again.
"Holy moonlight! C–cullen?" I blurted as I fixed my eyes on ’Cullen’ who’d seemingly appeared in front of me. I struggled to catch my breath, placing my palm on my chest.
He had a wide smirk on his face and waved at me, but that only managed to add to the unnerving feeling bubbling inside me. I subconsciously took a step back as I eyed him.
"Isleen, welcome back from your little... stroll." his eyes glimmered with a dangerous light as he spoke.
I gulped, chuckling nervously. "Uh, yeah. I just went to check on... to check on someone. I needed some air."
Just then, I remembered Rhett’s warning. I shouldn’t give this freak show a reason to be suspicious of me. I had to play along. I NEED to act a fool.
