Chapter 28: _ A pattern

Rhett cleared his throat. "Greetings, all. Thanks for coming on such short notice."

"We are happy to be here." Chorused the fairies.

"We want to know why we have been summoned." Chorused the elves.

Such was the distinction between the elves and fairies. Even as they all were in the room – old, young, and the like – all of them. Rhett wanted to investigate them all without any escaping his eyes.

"I am sure everyone in this room is well aware of the recent strange happenings in the pack. Firstly, the veil the fey entity we sheltered in this pack – which is you all, of course, has been breached by the vampires. That is the main clause of this gathering but we have other troubles." He paused, waiting for his words to sink in.

"What other concerns are there that connect to us?" Asked an elven woman who was clutching her child close to her.

Rhett wanted this to proceed as peacefully as it could. He sighed and was about to look up to reply when the door loudly creaked open. Every eye in the room turned toward the door to find Darius majestically striding in.

From beside him, "The pain in the ass is here." Farkas scoffed and Rhett couldn’t agree any less.

If you’d ask Rhett, Darius was more than a pain in the ass. He was more like a pain in the entire body.

"Sorry, sorry. Carry on, carry on..." Darius raised his hands to motion for the meeting to commence.

Murmurs had already begun to erupt in the room. Darius, that clown – he had created a distraction. The beta was always so clumsy.

It took the banging of the table before him for Rhett to be able to restore order back in the room.

He allowed a meaningful silence to stretch before continuing, ignoring Darius, "We have discovered wolf bones in the woods. I’m sure you all could have probably seen the news as this wasn’t the first case. This, coupled with the recent vampire activity..." He trailed off, his gaze sweeping across the room, searching the faces of the creatures who all looked melancholic now.

The elves had their ears sleeping as though they were about to cover their faces. The fairies on the other hand now had their pink skins turned pale in worry.

A murmur rippled through the crowd. One elf, tall and broad-shouldered, stepped forward. "Do you suspect us, Gamma Rhett?" His voice, though calm, held a hint of challenge.

The elves!

Darius cut through the conversation. "This is war. This is an ongoing investigation. Everyone is a suspect. Not to mention the veil that you all promised would protect the pack has proven to be ineffective. I have never heard of a veil being breached by creatures like ourselves without practical magic. Now, tell us, if you were in our shoes, would you not suspect yourselves?"

No, no, no; Rhett thought. This wasn’t how he wanted the meeting to go. He wasn’t intending on any direct confrontations as it would stir troubles within themselves.

They all needed to be united to fight the lawless vampires – not divided as this would lead.

"We don’t go back on our words. It’ll kill us and limit the availability of our abilities!"

"It’s insane to think of us as the culprits, Elara, is it not?"

"We can’t shed blood. We don’t shed blood. It’s not us!"

"You are making a grave mistake!"

Rhett clenched his fists, allowing his anger to flow rather than executing what it was propelling him to do – give Darius a straight punch in the face for this commotion.

"Listen, everyone!" The Delta barked, helping Rhett out of his misery.

The Delta was a tall and slender man in his early fifties. He usually wasn’t present in this section of the headquarters as he oversees other things like the welfare and well-being of the pack. However, such a case as this had called for almost all the wolves on the hierarchy to be present.

He had managed to silence the room with his commanding presence. "We have bigger problems than squabbling amongst ourselves. The vampires are bolder. That much is clear by them bringing the fight to our territory. No creature in this pack is safe or neutral and this pack is on the brink. We need unity, not disagreements. Let’s all be rest assured that whatever step we have decided to take in this meeting today is to ensure that we all survive."

Rhett could take over now. He usually hated talking too much, especially in such a setting but people like Farkas and the Beta were there to help him out when it got too awkward for him.

"Before we commence with anything in this meeting," He stepped forward. "I want to order a census on everyone here. Since we sent for every fey in the pack, we expect every one of you to be here. If any were absent, we would have a cause to suspect the fey. The absent ones would also be put on the top of our suspect list. Is everyone fine with that?"

Rhett saw Farkas nod in approval, but Darius remained silent, his expression unreadable. The fey murmured amongst themselves, some with apprehension, others with grudging acceptance.

"Is everyone in agreement?" Rhett pressed on with a firm tone.

A fairy stood up. He looked so manly saint in his white garment and long hair. "Innocence alone may not be enough, Gamma. We, too, are victims of this violation. We seek answers as much as you. However, do you not think that time wasted on us could be projected to other things that could work? Because I promise you, you won’t find anything. We are fighting for us and are a creature that symbolizes peace. None of us – either the elves, Nymphs, or the fairies would dare to stir trouble. We despise the taste of trouble without any plausible reason like the one we had when we started this war."

All of this, Rhett knew. The fey had always had a clean state when it came to violence. They only thrive in their realms and do little to interact with the other creatures. How selfless they were to stand up for the humans when creatures like them - the wolves who were closer to humans all watched them get hunted down and oppressed by vampires under the shadows.

The humans were just fools. They classify the killings as animal attacks. Wait a sec...
