Chapter 30: _ A chance

Isleen

~~

After jumping around the house with Cullen and Liam, I got tired and famished.

"I’ll have to go spend another hour cooking up a meal for me and Lupe in the kitchen and it’s because of you, rascals." I waved a warning finger at Cullen and Liam and began to head to the kitchen.

We had a guest and I couldn’t let her sit there unentertained.

"I’ll come with you, Isleen!" Lupe gingerly let out and hurried to me.

I smiled warmly at Lupe’s offer to help. "Thanks, but I’ve almost got it under control. You relax, you are our guest."

Lupe perched on a stool, swinging her legs playfully. "Nonsense! Two chefs are better than one. Moreover, women bond better while cooking." She winked at me.

A laugh escaped my lips. "Alright, you’ve twisted my arms. Let’s get to work." I shrugged and we both headed to the kitchen.

We were soon bustling with giggles and chattering. As we sliced vegetables and stirred sauces, Lupe told me about her traveling experiences and her experiences with her mate.

She really was into this bonding of a business. She was way too easy to vibe with and soon, I found myself liking her. Well, that was until...

"It sucka that the Vampires have the numbers. They keep turning and turning more humans. They have more power than the rest of us." Lupe sighed.

I chirped in, tasting the sauce from the spoon. "Don’t forget how ruthless they are, Lupe. It’s what is making them win to this point. Well, we won this attack. I guess that’s a good thing."

"We won but look at those of us who lost our loved ones." Lupe scoffed. "That’s not a win, Isleen."

I understood that she was still grieving the loss of her friend and also just getting over what happened to her. However, putting pressure on people who weren’t the vampires was just selfish.

"We have the best security system in the region, and the military is working tirelessly to keep us safe. What more do you want them to do? Lay down their lives? Like they weren’t doing that already!"

Where the hell was this aggression coming from? I had no idea why I snapped at such.

Lupe’s gaze, however, sharpened. "So protective of the military, are we? Is it because of Gamma Rhett, hmm?"

What the?!

She was just unbelievable!

I fear that she finding out my secret would backfire on me someday. She seemed quite the talkative. What should I do with her?

Panic clawed at my throat, but I forced myself to remain calm.

"Maybe it’s because Kylo is his son," I replied, my voice regaining its composure, "and I have enough patriotism to trust my pack."

Lupe’s smile sputtered. "Uh – Sorry, Isleen. I shouldn’t have mentioned that. Just – I don’t have an excuse but I’m sorry, girl, okay?"

"You want to be my friend, but you have me worried now that you might just go ahead and have a slip of the tongue in front of Kylo." I tightened, halting the spring onions I was chopping.

Lupe clasped her hands under her chin, giving me a puppy look. "No, no, Isleen. I’m sorry, I’ll behave myself, I promise."

Was it me or was there desperation in her tone?

I swiveled. "Lupe?" I sternly called.

"Speak, come on."

"Why are you so interested in being friends with me? I mean, you must know the history of my parents in the pack."

She flipped her head left and right. "Yes, I do. That your father is an omega who..."

Seriously?!

Did she really need to spell it no it?!

"Cut the crap, Lupe!" I banged on the kitchen table. "I didn’t ask you to give me the details."

She raised her hands. "Uh – uh. Sorry."

"So, tell me now," I demanded.

"What?"

"Why do you suddenly want to become friends with me!"

"Oh, that. Well...." She trailed off.

I twisted my mouth, carrying a firm countenance. "No lies or I won’t be your friend," I stated.

Lupe sighed and rested on the cabinet. "I’m afraid you won’t be friends with me anymore if you know."

If it were for a bad reason, I was very sure I wouldn’t want to be friends with her. However, if I told her that, she would not be willing to share.

"Come on, spill it." I urged.

"The thing is, you are Kylo’s girlfriend." She blurted out.

I stood awaiting the rest of the reason but none came. Finally, "Old news...?" I tilted my head, raising a confused brow.

"You don’t get it. I and Sabrina – my friend who lost her life in the attack used to bullies and troublemakers. Sabrina, however, is very strong. She fights for us when we get in trouble but now that she’s gone, I fear our foes will come for me and I will be alone."

What in the blazes of thunderstorms did I just hear?

I scoffed. "You mean you want to become friends with me because you want me to be your bodyguard?"

"No, no, Isleen. Don’t put it like that. I feel bad about what I and Sabrina did to you after you saved my life. I owe my life to you and I just want to live by your side – being your friend." She dropped her shoulders.

I creased my brows. "And of course, have me defend you from the ones you’ve bullied just like you’ve done me!"

"I’m sorry, Isleen."

"But how can I protect you? You already know what I am. I am the Omega – bullied, a lowest werewolf-ranked wolf in the pack. Daughter of an Omega who later became a traitor.

I could barely walk around without getting undeserving comments from the pack members. I had been previously denying who and what I was but now, I just didn’t care.

Lupe took a step closer and hesitated. "Isleen, I know what it looks like but give me a chance to prove myself to you. A chance to be your friend."

I stared intently at the knife in my hand, confusion whirling within me. Just when I brushed my hair backward, my eyes caught on a figure by the door of the kitchen.

In shock, I jumped, startled and I fumbled with the knife, the blade grazing my finger. A hiss escaped my lips as the pain set in.
