Chapter 37: _ Aella’s family

The fairy, however, didn’t seem too offended by Darius’s accusation. She instead appeared too stunned to speak.

"I — I mean, I don’t..." She stammered, shifting back in her chair.

Darius chuckled and leaned into his. "Aha. Don’t you dare try to lie to me!" He banged on the table hard.

Rhett couldn’t take it anymore. "Stop, Darius! Stop! You’re scaring her."

"Well, she needs to be scared. Look at her." He pointed at the now trembling fairy. "She knows something!"

Rhett’s frustration didn’t allow him to know what to say to Darius. Sure, the fairy looked suspicious but it was also evident that it wouldn’t be so hard to drill from her whatever she knew.

Instead, Rhett strained his head behind and looked at Farkas who was by the glass for support. Farkas nodded at him, gesturing for him to keep calm.

Heavens knew he’d have given Darius a big bad blow on the face if it was left to him. He knew that wouldn’t end well so he turned to the fairy instead.

"What’s your name?" Rhett asked, totally ignoring Darius.

The fairy’s eyes darted from left to right. Her complexion began to shimmer with blue. It meant she was experiencing a fleeting anxiety.

"I’m – My name is Cora." She replied.

Rhett nodded. "Hi, Cora. Why are you so restless?"

"I’m not very..." She tried to sound composed.

Darius wagged his index finger back and forth in a disapproving manner. "Don’t you dare try to lie to us, I warned you before. I thought you fairies claim to not be liars."

"I’m not a liar!" Argued Cora.

Rhett tapped the desk repeatedly. He wasn’t ready to hear any more of this. "Tell us what you know, Cora. You are not a liar. So, tell us."

Her face fell now, and so did her shoulders. Her fingers suddenly turned to her object of attention as she picked on them one after the other.

"We are waiting, woman." Darius bitterly reminded.

Cora nodded. "I know." She slowly lifted her head, determination now settling in her eyes and her complexion turning pale with worry instead of that of anxiety which she wore before. "The missing family – I know them."

Bravo, Rhett thought to himself. They were heading somewhere.

"What are you waiting for? Continue! We are not spending forever here." Darius hollered at her.

Rhett had to sigh and keep mute. There was no point repeating to Darius to take it easy with her. He wasn’t going to listen.

She was shuddering, Cora. "The mother, Aella, she is my friend. We escaped our realm together and were part of the refugees brought to this pack. We were together until we were allocated shelters. I live just across the street from them in this pack. However, about two weeks ago, Aella and their last-born son disappeared..."

"Disappeared? How? And you didn’t inform the authorities?!" Darius interrupted.

Rhett placed a hand on the desk to assure the fairy. "Please, go on."

"Thank you." She whispered, clearly shaken but she went on. "By disappearing, I don’t mean disappear disappear. I mean, I wouldn’t know. I just noticed that I stopped seeing my friend around and we meet almost every day despite the crisis. So, I approached her husband but he — he was acting weird." She paused.

"Like I said, we are not spending forever here." Darius pointed out again.

Pfft!

"He wouldn’t tell me where Aella and their son were, heavens help me. After that day, I didn’t see the rest of the family until..." She looked up at Rhet. "Until that night. The night of the attack. I saw their son in blood-stained clothes, holding a little boy. By Jove, I could swear I don’t know the little boy."

It was Rhett’s turn to interrupt. "Is the boy a wolf or fey?"

"A wolf. It was a little wolf boy."

Rhett and Darius exchanged glances. The pack of bones that were found last was of a little wolf’s. What if...

"Please, proceed." Rhett urged Cora.

She inhaled and went on. "When I asked him how he got all that blood on him, he said he was a victim of the attack, and I instantly asked him how he was but he said he wasn’t hurt. I asked about the little boy he was holding and he told me he was going to get the boy to his brother as his brother was also in the restaurant. And then, I — I just let him go since he seemed to be in a hurry." She finished with a hand on her mouth.

Now, this was bigger than Rhett had thought. Thankfully, he investigated everyone who was a part of the attack. Whoever that little boy was, his brother must have been wounded since he didn’t investigate someone with a little brother.

"But I investigated everyone present at the restaurant who wasn’t hurt. And only two fairies were present. They were females too." Rhett stated.

Cora seemed at a loss for words. "Oh, dear. Where could he be then?" She kept her gaze on her lap, worry turning her pale.

"You know what?" Darius spoke. "I guess it’s settled that this family is the culprit. Most especially, we need to find out their son who didn’t show up for the investigation. What’s his name?"

"Reed." Answered Cora.

"Reed," Darius repeated. "We will put up a wanted warrant for him if we find him to no avail. And you..." He leaned closer to the fairy. "Don’t even try to act smart. You better stay where we can find you until this investigation is over. Okay?"

She nodded. "By Jove, I am more than willing if this would help find Aella and her family."

"Thank you." Rhett grimly stated. "You’ll have to do one more thing for us. We will refer you to the composite drawing unit where you’ll help us get a sketch of this little boy done. All you need to do is to give descriptions and our artists will do the rest of the job. Also, we need a picture of Reed if you have one."

"Why, yes, I do!" Cora jumped and brought out a picture from her coat.

It was a family picture with Cora hanging beside a woman who seemed about the same age as her.

"That’s the picture I took with Aella’s family before our realm was destroyed." She said.
