Chapter 40: _ A lot to talk about

Isleen

~~

"They killed my brother, Ms. Isleen. Don’t ask me why I want to know like you don’t already know why."

I didn’t know what to say to Liam after that.

"We will, Liam. I told you before, my Dad’s handling it, so it’s going to be fine." Kylo drew Liam closer and said to him.

I knew Kylo had intentionally done that to show me that I was overreacting. I knew I was still paranoid from I and Kylo’s argument but I didn’t think that was the case here. To me, Liam had no business asking such questions that promote bitterness in his heart regardless of whatever the reason was.

However, this time, I could do nothing but follow behind them and watch them converse. Kylo was upset. I was too.

"You trust in your Daddy so much, Kylo," Liam commented, looking up at Kylo.

I watched Kylo nod. "I do. He’s the perfect person to keep us safe."

I bled in my heart. Kylo trusted his Dad that much. Should I ask what kind of trust he had in his Dad?

Nah, I better not. One thing was for sure, Kylo would never remain the same person should I allow this mate bond to pull me and his Dad closer. It shouldn’t get worse than it already was.

"Is he that powerful?" Liam pressed on.

I frowned.

Kylo chuckled. "He is. Worry not, Liam. You’ll be fine. I won’t let any harm come to you." He paused. "Isleen won’t let any harm come to you."

"Thank you, Kylo. I hope they catch those fey responsible for this." Liam sounded dejected.

Here was a little boy just missing his brother and I was here being suspicious of his words? What the hell was wrong with me?

Gamma Rhett – look what you’re doing to me.

.

.

When we arrived at the headquarters, I knew there was a high chance we’d stumble on Gamma Rhett but I didn’t know that it’d be that soon.

What I wasn’t expecting at all was him carelessly hinting at his visit to my house.

Oh, God. What was I supposed to say to Kylo now?

The moment Gamma Rhett’s retreating figure disappeared into the truck and the truck, out of the gates, Kylo whirled on me, his brow thunderous. "Why didn’t you tell me my Dad was at your house?" His voice was low, but the hurt and confusion that flickered in his eyes said more than any shout could.

I flinched. The Lord knows I didn’t want to lie to him. It felt like hell lying to Kylo but there literally was nothing like telling the truth here.

The truth would hurt him more bitterly than this lie.

Taking a deep breath, I said, "Honestly, Kylo, I — I was so flustered after Lupe’s visit, the friendship proposal and all. It — it completely slipped my mind."

Kylo wasn’t buying it. His jaw clenched tight, and his gaze held a skepticism that made me squirm. "Slipped your mind, Isleen? Or are there things you’re not telling me?"

Oh, no. No, no, no.

"Like I said, Lupe’s visit took so much out of me and it completely slipped my mind." I stood my ground.

Father forgive me for I have sinned.

Kylo’s jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed. "Isleen, that’s not believable. You know how important this is to me."

Shame washed over me. "I know, and I’m truly sorry. It wasn’t intentional-"

"Then what was it?" Kylo interrupted, his voice low and tight. "Is there something else you’re not telling me?"

Oh, please. I can’t.

My gaze darted around, searching for an escape that was nowhere. Liam just stood there, watching us keenly. I didn’t like that we were arguing in front of Liam.

"No, Kylo, please. There’s nothing else." It was a lie.

I was a liar now.

He studied me for a long moment, his silence heavier than the accusation even. "We shouldn’t keep secrets from each other, Isleen. You know that, right?"

My throat tightened. "Yes, I do." Guilt nibbled at my insides.

I’d carry this guilt for as long as I could. I needed to. Kylo’s feelings were in question.

He sighed. "We have a lot to talk about later, Isleen. A lot." His voice softened slightly. "But for now, let’s get Liam settled. We should get you to go sign those adoption papers."

Thank goodness.

I nodded mutely, my heart sinking and sinking. Kylo forced a smile and began to lead us forward to the adoption office. I took Liam’s hand and we trailed behind.

Even Liam was silent this time. He understood. What they both didn’t know was that Kylo’s Dad was my mate and I had kissed him.

As we entered the office, it was easy for us thanks to Kylo’s influence. Or perhaps, it was Gamma Rhett’s. Either way, we answered fewer questions.

I gave reasons why I wanted Liam but my social status wanted to get in the way. Kylo however stood as a guarantor for me. Knowing that Liam had no one and we were at war made it all easier.

I was barely focusing all the way and Kylo noticed. He saw it. Not that he wasn’t looking so fucked up too.

Fear gripped me. I feared the confrontation that would follow. It was dark by the time we were done.

"Next time, you shouldn’t come as late as this. I pulled my strings because of him." The officer in charge said to me.

Kylo was the ’him’.

Kylo however came to my rescue. "I had her wait behind after seeing the news this morning. I needed to be sure that it was safe to leave the house."

"Oh, Kylo. It’s not particularly safe at any time of the day. But I tell you, these killings happen at night. So you lot better get going." Chuckled the mustached officer.

Liam spoke to my surprise. "I am not afraid of darkness."

"Is that so, big man?" The officer raised a brow, impressed by Liam’s boldness.

Liam nodded measuredly. "Yes."

That somehow spooked me up.
