Chapter 42: _ They won’t find them
The next morning, I woke up all thanks to the alarm. I had reset it last night as I and Liam needed to be at the school early.
It wouldn’t be nice for a teacher and her new son to arrive late to school. I knew I’d have lots of questions to answer considering Liam. I didn’t have too many friends among the other teachers as I was usually belittled and judged.
Belittled for being an omega and judged for dating Kylo. Just like everywhere else. 𝙣𝒐𝙫𝙥𝙪𝙗.𝙘𝙤𝙢
I found Liam already bouncing on the balls of his feet, excitement radiating from him.
"Good morning, Ms. Isleen!" he chirped. "I can’t wait to go to school!"
It was rather rare to find a kid this excited to go to school. It seemed that I had made the right choice of a son.
I smiled, surprised by his enthusiasm. "That’s wonderful, Liam. Did you have a good night’s sleep?"
"The best!" He beamed. "And I already took a bath!"
I raised an eyebrow, impressed. "You did? That’s fantastic. How about you wear your mofty wear today? We can visit your old house to get your things after school."
Liam’s face lit up. "Oh, Can I? But will it be okay?"
I had thought he’d exhibit some kind of sadness at the mention of the house he used to share with his brother but he showed no sign of such.
"Of course," I assured him. "Remember, I’m your teacher, and I can talk to the principal about why you had to wear a mofty."
Perhaps, it was because he was still young. Kids usually don’t grieve as much as we adults do.
Liam wore a top that had gotten small for me and one of my shorts. It took lots of adjusting but we were able to pull an outfit out of those for him.
.
I ushered him to the sitting room so that I’d get dressed myself. As I pulled off the second nightwear I wore for the last night, I couldn’t help but decide that I was losing it.
I heard the mate bond wasn’t to be underestimated. Now, I knew why.
.
Once I stepped out and found the sitting room silent with just the low noises made by the TV because Liam was seeing the news, I knew Cullen must be busy.
"Seen Cullen?" I casually caressed Liam’s hair as I waltzed to the kitchen.
I was going to make us some toast and coffee.
Liam didn’t look at me but he simply replied. "No." His attention was fixated on the screen.
That made me wonder what had snatched his attention, so I skimmed my gaze to the screen. And there, I froze when I saw the headlines.
Another pack of fairy bones had been found.
This was getting out of hand. Without thinking, I hurried to the switch and pulled it off. Liam shouldn’t be watching such. It would only build fear within him.
Or, at least, that was what I thought at that moment. I forgot that awareness was a necessity too.
Liam came protesting. "Why?"
"Don’t watch that, Liam." I shrugged sheepishly and scratched my nape. "You heard Kylo. The killings will soon stop. Let’s not bug ourselves further, okay?"
Sometimes, Liam could remind you that he wasn’t a baby. This was one of those times. "I can handle the news, Ms. Isleen. I need to know."
"Fine." I turned back and replugged the TV set. "Happy watching!"
Anxiety was telling on me. Imagine having to deal with having your boyfriend’s Dad as your mate and then seeing more dead people in your pack daily.
It was frustrating.
I bustled around the kitchen, the sound of sizzling toast filling the air. I set two plates down, one with cereal for Liam and another with a simple breakfast sandwich I’d whipped up for myself. "Liam, come eat, honey! We don’t want to be late for your first day!"
Liam’s voice drifted from the living room, "Just a minute, Ms. Isleen! I’m almost done watching the news."
I frowned, a flicker of unease crossing my brow. I didn’t like the idea of him being exposed to the gruesome headlines, but Kylo had assured me the killings wouldn’t continue for long. We should believe in the pack’s soldiers.
In Gamma Rhett.
Still, the image of those skeletal remains haunted me.
"But the news is scary, Liam," she called out, raising my voice slightly. "Why don’t you come to watch something fun while we eat?"
I didn’t know kids could be this stubborn.
His reply was muffled but I could have sworn I heard Liam swear. But then again, he couldn’t have. Not at me.
Reluctantly, he obeyed and grumpily sat across from me by the table. I decided to overlook it. He needed to know that I call the shots here.
As we ate, I couldn’t help but wonder why Cullen wasn’t already up and about, grumbling about the day ahead. A niggling unease settled in my stomach, but I pushed it down. Maybe he’d overslept or left early for a meeting.
Deciding not to worry further, I headed to Cullen’s room to check. The door creaked open to reveal an empty space, the bed neatly made. My initial unease morphed into a cold dread. Where was he?
C –could those skeletons be...
No, no, no.
Panic gripped me hard. I trembled, but then, my gaze fell on the dresser where a single sheet of paper stood out against the dark wood.
Hurriedly, I picked it up, and unfolded it. It was a note, scrawled in Cullen’s familiar handwriting:
’Gone to work early. Important meeting. Don’t look for me, grumpy.’
I sighed with relief. What in the hell’s name was wrong with me?
Cullen usually did this whenever he had important business at work. He’d leave early.
Of course, it was just a work meeting. I should have known better than to jump to conclusions.
With a sigh, I joined Liam at the table, the toast now cooling slightly. "Cullen’s gone to work already," I explained, forcing a smile.
"Oh," Liam said simply, his gaze fixed on his cereal bowl. "Will he be back before us?"
"He didn’t say," I admitted, a hint of worry creeping back into her voice. I wished we could all arrive home at the same time so that no one would be worried about the other.
However, it was typical of Cullen to arrive later than I usually do. I shouldn’t just carelessly be worried. Remembering Liam’s earlier insistence on watching the news, I decided to change the subject. "So, what did you think of
the news this morning?"
Liam’s eyes widened slightly. "The news about the — dead people?"
I winced. "Yes, well, Gamma Rhett assured us they’re working tirelessly to find the culprit. We just need to have faith."
Liam pushed his cereal around the bowl, his silence heavy. He seemed to be thinking about something. "Do you think they’ll find them?"
"I hope so," I said honestly, my own anxieties surfacing again.
The discovery of more bones had shaken me more than she cared to admit. Or maybe it wasn’t that. Maybe it was something else.
Liam’s next words caused my mouth to pop open. "Megami, they won’t."
