Chapter 47: _ Liar
He was a bad father; Rhett thought. Yes, he was. Except for flickering his gaze to Kylo here and there, his eyes were transfixed on Isleen.
He, however, couldn’t let them see him. He hadn’t seen the beauty in Isleen’s eyes and he was already this hard. Heaven knows what he’d do should she stare at him with those eyes of hers.
Rhett knew he was acting erratically. He should be focusing on the investigation, not watching his mate walk away with his son and some boy. He should get back to the precinct and find Cora.
He berated himself internally. He was a Gamma, a leader, and he couldn’t afford to be distracted by personal desires. The pack, the investigation, his son - these were his priorities.
Maybe he was telling himself a lie. Isleen - the moment his wolf recognized her as his mate, she had become his priority too.
It wasn’t until they were out of sight that he allowed himself to also go to his destination. When he arrived at the precinct, Farkas was the first to approach him.
"Rhett, the sketch is done."
Now, that was the first good news he’d heard since this shirt started. "Let me see." He extended his hand and Farkas placed the paper in it.
What he saw almost made him turn on his heels and go bang on Isleen’s door but he had to be rational. He needed to be in control of his actions and not let emotions drive him.
"I’ve checked the stats. It’s a boy named Liam. He had a brother who he lived with, but unfortunately, he lost his brother to the last attack." Farkas, oblivious to Rhett’s inner turmoil continued to provide the information.
Rhett’s grip on the paper tightened. What was that boy doing with a fairy at night? At night his brother died.
Something wasn’t right.
Farkas cut Rhett’s thoughts short. "What’s up, man? What are you doing? You will tear the damn sketch."
It was then that Rhett realized he had rumpled the sheet. "I know him." He said in a low tone.
"Oh, good. That makes it all easier. You tell us where he is and we’ll go get him." Farkas’s face lightened up.
No; Rhett thought.
Isleen had just adopted the boy. She was probably beaming with joy and excitement about it right now. He wouldn’t want to spoil it for her. He’d give her time to enjoy it and go bring the boy for questioning himself tomorrow after he was back from school.
He began to walk in the direction of the meeting room. Farkas followed him right away.
"Is the investigation done?" He asked.
"Uh – no. I think Darius is questioning the last person though."
Rhett winced and began to run. "Shit." He grumbled.
"Why? What’s wrong, Rhett?" Farkas hurried after him.
The soldiers they met on the way seemed confused, seeing their Gamma and Military Advisor run about. However, none of their confusions matched Farkas’s.
Rhett didn’t reply to Farkas until arrived in front of the meeting room’s door. Slightly panting, "She’s hiding something." He provided and then, opened the door.
"Can we go now?"
"Can you see now that we are all innocent?"
"We have to go find the missing family!"
"Why are we still here?"
"Is the questioning not over yet?"
The questions were unending the moment Rhett and Farkas entered the hall. Alistair looked at them and gave a respectful gesture.
Farkas went to pat the boy. "Good job keeping the order here, Alistair." He said.
"Cora?" Rhett, however, called."Would you please come with me?"
The room fell as quiet as a graveyard right after. All eyes flickered between Rhett and the Cora who was hesitatingly standing up. Her hesitation was brief, but Rhett saw it. She definitely was holding something back.
The collective sigh of the fey followed her every step until she was right in front of him. "Gamma, how can I help you again?"
"In my office." Rhett grimly replied and began to walk out of the hall.
Farkas, though clearly bewildered, remained silent. He offered Rhett a nod of support before trailing behind them.
The walk to his office was an exercise in controlled silence. Every fiber of Rhett’s being yearned to pry, to demand the truth he knew she held back. But he held his tongue, choosing to wait until they were in the confines of his office, away from prying ears and curious eyes.
As soon as the door clicked shut, Rhett leaned against his desk, his eyes boring into Cora’s. "Cora," he began, his voice devoid of emotion, "we need to talk."
He saw her swallow and he glanced at Farkas, hoping he saw it too.
"About what? I already told you everything I knew." she managed to choke out.
A smirk crossed Rhett’s face. "You did told us something, Cora but it’s definitely not everything you know." 𝙣𝙤𝙫𝒑𝙪𝒃.𝒄𝒐𝙢
"I did — I..."
Rhett lost his cool and he tapped his fingers on the table impatiently. "Listen, Cora. Whatever you say now will help us determine when or how we can curb this situation. Did you hear? Another remains has been found and guess what? This time, it’s a fairy’s."
She gasped, hands covering her mouth and her shoulders trembled. She couldn’t even meet Rhett’s gaze.
"I’m sure you already can guess whose or who it is. Since we can’t find that family and the rest of you are here, it’s definitely one of them."
This time, Cora began to cry. Rhett liked that. That was the reaction he wanted.
"So, Cora, you better start talking because if we lose any more members, the blood will be on your hands." He narrowed his eyes, tapping the table to meet the rhythm of his tone.
Farkas thought that was too harsh; Rhett knew. "Rhett..." He tried to stop him but Rhett raised a hand.
"I’ve tried to do this the civilized way, but Cora here would rather lie to us. So, let’s do it HER way." He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms.
