Chapter 53: _ The end of me
My lungs burned as I bolted out of the classroom, the panicked cries of the students echoing behind me. I already told them what to do. They should be safe if they remained quiet. They were protected by the walls but Liam was out there.
Nah. I needed to find him first.
Ignoring the pounding in my chest, I sprinted against the running figures of students. Everyone was in an intense panic.
Thank the Goddess, a familiar figure emerged from the disarray. It was Mrs. Morrigan who was shepherding a group of younglings towards the school exit.
"Mrs. Morrigan!" I called with a hoarse voice. "What’s happening?"
She cast me a harried glance, her face pale. "Mr. Fenrir... he’s dead!"
The news slammed into me hard. It wasn’t expected. The same Mr. Fenrir I had just spoken to a few hours ago?
Despite our differences, death wasn’t something I ever wished upon anyone. My lips trembled upon hearing that.
My mind scrambled, searching for another explanation, but the fear in Mrs. Morrigan’s eyes confirmed the grim reality.
Mr. Fenrir was dead.
Geez.
"Have you seen Liam?" I pressed, hoping for a positive answer.
But then again, I’d be damned before expecting anything positive from this woman. Even with the situation of things, I bet she’d not give an answer.
Mrs. Morrigan’s gaze flickered with disdain. "Honestly, Ms. Isleen, can’t you see I’m busy? Run! The killer is still out there!" She shoved past me and hurried with the students away from view.
"Bitch!"
We Werewolves were apex predators, capable of defending ourselves against most threats. Why were they running like sheep instead of facing the danger?
Confused and shaken, I exited the building. My destination was the playground. I knew Liam was smart. He could have hidden there somewhere.
However, on getting there, what I met was eerie silence and emptiness. Liam wasn’t here too. Panic threatened to consume me. My insides were churning– not from hunger but fear.
As I turned to perhaps, go back into the building, my foot collided with someone.
"Whoa!" I stumbled back but what I met sent the exclamation back inside my mouth.
It was Gamma Rhett.
Our eyes locked, and a familiar warmth bloomed in my chest. My wolf whined happily, not giving two fucks about the pandemonium going on around us.
His earthy scent was comforting as it washed over me. Funny how this man’s scent was capable of making me forget the fear that had gripped my insides.
The bond between us was undeniably a strong one. It was a pull I fought against with every fiber of my being. Yet, under his intense gaze, the fight felt futile. Just as the pack soldiers rushed past us, I was reminded of my surroundings.
I tore my eyes away.
"Gamma Rhett," I mumbled in a bid to greet him and then flee.
I started to turn, but his hand gently grasped my arm.
Panic flooded through me. I couldn’t afford this distraction, not now. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to find Liam. But Gamma Rhett’s touch was like a rope drawing me in.
He took steps closer to me. I stopped but my back was turned to him. His breath was warm on my neck, sending shivers down my spine.
He took a while to speak, probably letting me feel the weight of his presence. Finally, "Get to safety, Isleen," he murmured. "Expect me soon."
Argh.
Geez!
Could this man not be so mysterious for once?! What did he mean I should expect him?
Why should I expect HIM?!
Then, with a final squeeze of my hand, he left. He went into the school building and since I didn’t find Liam outside, I also had to go in there.
However, I’d kiss a cat’s ass than follow behind Gamma Rhett right now. I let him go and when I was sure there was enough distance between us, I also moved.
Hell, he walked so fast. I couldn’t help scrutinizing him from behind. My gaze tracked the sway of his hips and the powerful set of his shoulders. He walked with such grace and authority that would make one wonder if he wasn’t shaken by the crime that had just taken place.
Gamma Rhett – he was one hell of a man.
He stopped when he neared some pack shoulders. I saw his hand resting on the shoulder of one of them. His posture was relaxed yet commanding. Their brief exchange was too far to hear, but I could see one of the soldiers straighten up, nodding curtly before rushing off. In Rhett’s presence, even the most seasoned warriors seemed to shrink a little.
The man was a force. He wasn’t just that. He was my mate too.
As I tore my eyes away from them, a prickling sensation ran down my spine. I knew, without turning to him that his gaze was on me. He was speaking to the rest of the pack soldiers, probably giving orders but his gaze was definitely on me.
I didn’t know what his deal was. It almost seemed as though he was showing some interest in me. First, he came to my door, kissed me, spoke to me directly in front of Kylo, and now, this!
Geez, Gamma Rhett, leave me alone!
I am your son’s girlfriend for crying out loud. Just wait – I couldn’t wait to reject your ass.
As if he could hear my thoughts, his deep voice resonated "Isleen. I told you to go home."
W— why was he talking to me?!
Biting my bottom lip, I whirled around to find his gaze focused on me, his expression as blank as a canvas. A blush crept up my neck, and I mumbled a...
"I’m leaving after I find Liam."
He simply nodded and his eyes met mine again for a while longer this time. Then, he turned back to the guard, leaving me feeling strangely exposed and breathless.
His lingering gaze burned on my skin even as I walked away.
This man would be the end of me.
