Chapter 59: _ The Alpha and Beta
Rhett

"Sir, the autopsy results are out and here."
"Bring it to my office," Rhett barked, standing up immediately and happy that one thing was moving. "Now."
With an identical look of concern, Farkas and Rhett abandoned their talk and scrambled to Rhett’s office. As they entered his office, they found Alistair standing stiffly at attention. A thick file rested in his hands.
"Sir, the autopsy report on the latest victim," Alistair announced, his voice tight. "Delivered directly from the pack doctors."
Rhett snatched the file, his eyes skimming the contents. "And?"
Sweat beaded on Alistair’s brow. "The results are— disturbing, sir. The victim was a wolf—a young one. A boy, from the looks of it. One good bad thing is that he was killed in the same pattern as the last victim. Eaten to death."
The thought of it was nauseating. The pain...
"As we’ve suspected." Rhett nodded, clenching his jaw.
Farkas, however, gasped, hand flying to his mouth. "Who in the Goddess’s name would do such a thing to a child?"
"A psychotic monster, that’s who," Rhett growled, his knuckles whitening as he clenched the edge of his desk.
Every single detail found out only managed to provoke him more.
"To think this is happening right beneath our watch..." Farkas murmured, head shaking solemnly.
Yes. They were failing the people. It was their duty to protect them, and so far, they’ve not been doing much of that.
Rhett turned his gaze to Alistair. "Lieutenant, what about the census? Have you located any reports of missing wolf children within our pack?"
At least, that would make them know who the dead boy was and compare for any connection with the last victim.
Alistair shifted uncomfortably. "Sir, I was just about to report that before the autopsy results arrived. There are no missing children on our records. The only known cases are the fairy family who disappeared, along with the young wolf girl whose bones were the first we discovered."
What the?!
This information just threw them right where they’d begun. If there were no missing children in the pack, where had the bones surfaced from?
"It just keeps getting more complicated," he muttered.
"Indeed," Farkas agreed. "With no missing children reported, then whose bones are those?"
The question remained unanswered.
Rhett stood abruptly. He primarily wanted to respect the fairies’ fears, but now, things looked such couldn’t be the case anymore. "I have to see the Alpha."
"Good luck with the boy, Rhett." Farkas patted his shoulder and Alistair saluted.
Rhett only nodded at them before striding out of the office.
Despite his irritation for the Alpha, he had no other options. They had to start thinking big and taking huge steps if they wanted this to work.
Swallowing his growing sense of frustration, he headed towards the Alpha’s residence. On getting there, the guards recognized him, and ushered him inside with respect.
They announced his arrival to the Alpha. Moments later, he was ushered into the grand living room.
The sight that greeted him was enough to tie a knot in his stomach. The Alpha, Luna, and Beta were lounging around a table laden with food. They were indulging in a feast of fried chicken.
Internally, Rhett seethed.
Supplies within the pack were dwindling with the ongoing war, yet here in the Alpha’s home, it was an endless party.
How much he missed the late Alpha.
"Alpha Beowulf." He, however, bowed and courtsied. "Luna Dawn. Beta Darius."
The Alpha stood up and came over with extended hands. "Oh, it’s the man of the day! Good to see you here, Gamma Rhett. The beta was just filling me in on the progress of things."
Progress?
How dare he call all of the bullshits going on progress?
"Gamma Rhett, please, do join us." The Luna beamed at him with such flourish that made Rhett want to tell her to go to hell.
Instead. "Thank you but I’ll pass."
"Aha! Rhett is always about business." Darius chuckled with a hint of mockery as he picked on his teeth with a toothpick.
Rhett decided to ignore him. He shook the Alpha’s hands. "Since the beta has filled you up on the situation of things at hand, I’d like to say he hasn’t told you enough."
"How so?" Beowulf raised a brow and his finely trimmed beard shifted.
Rhett told him all about Cora and her story and also about the unknown bones.
Darius clicked his tongue. "Did you keep all of this from me during the interrogation, huh?"
Rhett simply ignored him. He had no strength for Darius’s foolishness. "I come bearing a proposal that might help get us out of this mess as quickly as possible." He declared to Beowulf.
"Aren’t you being too forward, Rhett?" Darius stood up. "Declaring proposals is the job of the Alpha, not you. Just do your job, handle investigations, apprehend criminals – which you’ve obviously been failing woefully at and wait for the big shots to call the shots."
This time, Rhett couldn’t hold himself back.
"Really? Why don’t we hear your proposition then, Darius? People are dying every day. Cruel and slow deaths at that. Yet, you are here—" He flitted his gaze around the little feast. "
He heard Dawn’s hiss. "Excuse me, Gamma Rhett? That’s my father you are speaking to right there."
Yes, your stupid father!
"Go inside, Dawn. This is men’s talk." Darius shunned her himself.
She almost threw her fists in the air before storming inside loudly.
"Women." Beowulf laughed. "Gamma Rhett, I understand your frustration," the Alpha interjected. "However, accusations and insults will not solve anything. If you have a proposal, I’m willing to hear it." 𝔫𝖔𝖛𝖕𝖚𝔟.𝖈𝖔𝔪
Look at him using his scholarly cunning on him; Rhett scoffed internally. He knew that the minute he was out of there, those two would begin to plot how to outthrow him.
Use him until the war was over and proceed to their next plan. They all had no idea that the Holy One had already given him a heads-up about their intentions.
Which was all the more reason why he didn’t like the Alpha and Beta.
He took a deep breath, trying to control his anger. "Apologies, Alpha. My emotions got the better of me. My proposal is this: we go to Aceco. It’s either we risk it or we keep dying. I’d say it’s not worth more of dying every day."
