Chapter 76: _ He is Beyond Me

As soon as my feet touched the pavement, a mournful whine tore from within me.

My wolf.

She yearned to get back to him, to submit to his dominance– to be a part of this new and terrifying connection. Tears streamed down my face, blurring the world that seemed to be spinning around me.

Why?

Why did this have to happen?

Why did my heart ache so fiercely for a man who was forbidden?

What could I have done to always be this unlucky? It always felt like the whole universe had come together to make life unbearable for me.

If any more mishaps happened to me, I doubt I’d ever be able to handle any of them.

I sank onto the curb, burying my face in my hands as sobs wracked my body. I couldn’t hold it in any longer.

The truth was, I was crying more because of the longing that had settled in my heart for Gamma Rhett. I didn’t want to move away from him. I in fact wanted to walk back to him. To tell him I wouldn’t reject him any longer.

That there was an us.

Yet, I knew this was the work of the mark. Normally, we were supposed to have a passionate night after being marked. Well, that was for normal folks who didn’t have such a circumstance surrounding their union.

The one case I knew of that was close to oirs was Raya who was mated to her mother’s new husband.

The mother ended up killing her daughter and herself in the end. The man walked a free man but both mother and daughter died.

This mate rule was toxic and could break families. The Moon Goddess— if she loved us, she needed to do better. 𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝙗.𝒄𝒐𝒎

Why couldn’t things just be simple?

Why mate two impossible people?

Through the haze of my misery, I suddenly felt a presence behind me all thanks to my special power.

I knew who it was.

Wiping my tears with trembling fingers, I spun around, ready to lash out.

Gamma Rhett stood there, his face contorted with concern. "Isleen, I’m just..."

"Don’t," I interrupted, my voice hoarse. "Just... stay away from me. What are you following me for after I’ve made myself clear enough?!"

He didn’t move, but his eyes held a stubborn glint. "I’ll keep my distance," he said. "But I’m not leaving until I know you’re inside safely. It’s late. Can’t have you walking alone while the pack’s unsafe."

Why was he talking as if I was walking ten miles? My house was just a few walks away.

"In case you’re forgetting, I’m a wolf. It’s the only reason why I’m caught in this miserable situation with you." I blurted and began to walk away.

However, before I turned, I saw a glint of something that seemed like hurt in his eyes. Gamma Rhett wasn’t the type to feel hurt, so maybe I saw it wrongly.

If however, my words hurt him, I’d say more of them next time.

Isleen! What next time?!

There’d be no ’next time’ between me and him, geez.

"I very well know you’re a wolf. Those people dying are also wolves, you know. And then, you’re an Ome..."

He had almost had a slip of the tongue before realizing what he was going to say.

I turned to him. "An Omega. Say it. Don’t hold back. Call me what I am since you like to see things for what they are!"

He sheepishly stuffed his hands in his pockets, watching me from the corner of his eyes. I scoffed before resuming my walking.

"Go back."

"I won’t but I’ll keep my distance from you– during this walk. If that will make you sleep better tonight."

Sleep better?

Pfft. I bet any of us would sleep at all. I knew that even though he was putting up a brave front, a part of him would be scared too. A part of him had to be scared. I would bet he didn’t have a beating heart otherwise.

Since there was no arguing with him, I gave up.

One minute later, I was right in front of my apartment building. He kept his promise though. He stayed a very reasonable distance away.

Or maybe he was just being careful not to get spotted together.

With one last glare at him, I stormed toward my apartment building, wiping fresh tears from my cheeks.

As I unlocked my door and stepped inside, I saw Cullen lying fast asleep on the couch, the abandoned video game controller clutched in his hand.

Man, he had to be at work tomorrow. If he was feeling sleepy, he ought to just turn the damn TV off and go to bed!

Paranoid, I made for the switch and turned the TV off. I sighed and turned back to Cullen who had half of his mouth open, snoring with hands and legs scattered all over him.

I rolled my eyes and walked to the window. I wanted to watch him walk away. I wanted to see his true emotions. I should be able to tell if he was indeed happy or sad by how he walked away.

However, this man would never cease to be full of surprises. I caught a glimpse of him standing across the street. It was as though he’d know I’d come to take a last peep.

He offered me a small smile that I could see from the long distance all thanks to my elevated wolf vision. It wasn’t particularly as sharp as the vampires’ but it was enough to suffice for us werewolves too.

Gamma Rhett gave me a last gesture; a hesitant wave.

The audacity of the man!

All I could do was glare back before slamming the window shut. Once the window was closed, I shut my eyes and muttered a silent prayer to myself.

I was lost but I knew he’d find me. The Lord would find me. The Lord must help me find my way. This was beyond me.

Beyond my power.

Gamma Rhett was beyond me.
