Chapter 92: _ We Felt Like A Joke

Kylo, however, seemed indifferent. He gently lowered Liam to the ground, his gaze finally meeting mine firmly. A wave of emotions washed over me as I stared into his familiar eyes, searching for a clue to what he was thinking.

Anger?

Regret?

Relief? His expression remained unreadable.

"Isleen," he finally acknowledged.

"Hi, Kylo." I tried to sound neutral and surprisingly, I did it well.

Lupe, who seemed to be perceptive picked up on the tension between us and hastily intervened. "Kylo," she greeted, her voice not edging past her grief. "Thank you for coming."

"Of course," he replied, his gaze settling on her briefly before returning to me. "I just wanted to offer my condolences."

Why was he looking at me?

Geez, I could pee my pants at this point.

Lupe sniffled, wiping at her cheeks with the back of her hand. "Thank you, Kylo," she mumbled. "We were just heading over to Isleen’s place. The soldiers need to secure the scene, you see."

A faint groan escaped Kylo’s lips. "Cool. Let’s get to it then." He reached down and grasped Liam’s hands. My little boy who seemed oblivious to the tension between Kylo and me, beamed back at him, genuinely happy to see Kylo.

My stomach wobbled at the thought of Kylo spending time in my apartment. How was I to look at him?

How could I even?

Father forgive me for I have sinned.

We all set off towards my place. Lupe and I followed behind Liam and Kylo as they seemed to chatter all the way. I couldn’t take my eyes off them all the while, guilt and shame chewing at me.

I felt dirty. So dirty.

I didn’t realize that silence had reigned between me and Lupe until she spoke. "Is something wrong between you and Kylo?" She asked softly, breaking the silence.

My head jerked up as startled me out of the fog of my thoughts. "Why? Why do you ask?"

"There’s just– this tension between you two," Lupe said carefully. "It’s kind of obvious."

I sighed, the sound disappearing in the busy street filled with passing by fey and wolves. The wolves were doing what they knew jor to do best; pointing at me and Kylo whilst gossiping all they could.

Bastards.

"We had a fight," I admitted, kicking at an empty bottle on the floor.

"Was it because of your— his— Gamma Rhett?" Lupe’s voice trailed off.

I almost snapped at her before I caught myself. "No," I said, shaking my head. "Actually, we broke up."

Lupe’s eyes widened. "Broke up? Why?"

"He— he wanted things to change," I mumbled, picking at a loose thread on my sleeve. "He wanted everyone to stop blaming me for dating him when I wasn’t his mate. He... he wanted me to find my mate and be with him for my own peace. Kylo just wants what’s best for me."

It was the truth. It was also what made everything happening so agonizing for me. If Kylo was at least a bad boyfriend, this might have come out easier for me. Cheating on him with his father might have been a lot bearable.

Lupe pondered my words for a moment, a thoughtful frown creasing her forehead. Then, she spoke with disbelief, "He wanted you to— find your mate? Damn. That’s a man right there. Like you said, he wants what’s best for you."

"What’s best for me is not that simple, Lupe."

Her hand reached out, squeezing mine gently. "I know, Isleen. But you’ll be okay. We both will."

I knew she’d be okay but me?

"Does he know about you and his Dad?"

Before she could finish that statement, the words gushed from my mouth. "No! Of course not."

I was being paranoid– shouting at Lupe like that, but everything she was asking was things I’d rather not discuss. Things I had been running away from.

Guilt washed over me when I realized how harsh I sounded. Lupe looked genuinely surprised.

"I think you should tell him, Isleen," she said gently. "Sooner rather than later."

She wasn’t even pissed. I had no idea what I had done to be surrounded by such kind souls.

She shook her head and continued when I didn’t say anything. "You know, the longer you wait, the harder it’ll be."

I swallowed the lump in my throat making it difficult to speak. "Again, it’s not that easy," I whispered.

Lupe patted me gently. "I know," she muttered. "But you guys will get through it. You’re strong, Isleen. And honestly, it was a bold move to accept Gamma Rhett. I understand, mate bonds are powerful things."

My head snapped up, surprise jolting me. Accept Gamma Rhett?

Me?

"Wait, what?"

She gestured towards my neck, a small cheeky smile settling on her lips. "The mark. I recognized it, you see. I have one too."

Oh God, the mark!

Blood rushed to my face. I had forgotten I hadn’t covered it. In my emotional whirlwind, the sinful mark at the base of my neck had been completely forgotten.

Panic streamed through me at that moment of epiphany. I hurriedly tugged at my shirt, desperately trying to pull it higher, higher, to hide the mark before Kylo saw.

Lupe chuckled softly. "Maybe do that once we get inside, before he notices."

Relief flooded me as we reached the steps leading up to my apartment. My heart hammered in my chest when I and Lupe entered the cool darkness of the hallway. Kylo and Liam were waiting for us by the door, Liam bouncing on the balls of his feet.

I and Kylo’s eyes met again and his gaze lingered on mine for longer this time. My stomach knotted, guilt twisting like a vine in my gut.

Kylo noticed my uneasiness and looked away quickly. I didn’t know what he was thinking. I couldn’t read his expression.

Oh, Kylo. Would you ever forgive me?

"Welcome home," I said awkwardly as I scurried to unlock the door.

Liam and Kylo stepped inside. I saw Kylo’s eyes taking in the familiar space. We had spent a lot of time at my apartment and those moments stood out starkly in my memory – movie nights, kisses, promises that now all seemed like a frolic theater to me.

We felt like a joke. What have I done?
