Chapter 141: 141, Destined to be Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law (4)_1
Jian Qing was quietly listening with the necklace on.
Rhee glanced at Jian Qing, continuing to speak, “After my father passed away five years ago, Jingwu would always take off this necklace around the anniversary of his death. This necklace holds great significance for him. Now that he has given it to you, it signifies that he has chosen you for life.”
Listening, Jian Qing felt waves ripple through her heart. Suddenly, the necklace around her neck felt heavy.
“Little Qingqing, it seems we’re fated to become mother-in-law and daughter-in-law.” Rhee’s mood lightened up and she wrapped her arm around Jian Qing’s shoulder.
Jian Qing’s lips turned up into a faint smile, neither agreeing nor denying.
“If Jingwu ever bullies you in the future, just come to me, I will take care of him,” Rhee patted her chest confidently.
Though she knew she wouldn’t be able to reign in her icy son, she still had to maintain her image as a mother-in-law.
When Quan Hao and his son came out from the kitchen after washing the dishes, they happened to hear her words. Quan Jingwu looked at his father and spoke in a lowered voice.
“Dad, I think you and Mom could consider going on another honeymoon.”
Quan Hao coughed lightly, glaring at him unhappily.
He understood the insinuation all too well—his son was telling them that they were acting like light bulbs, ruining his date.
After having chatted with Jian Qing about this and that, under the chilling aura emitting from his son, Quan Hao looked at his wife, engrossed in conversation, and interjected in a softened tone.
“Rhee, it’s getting late. We should be leaving, shouldn’t we?”
“It’s still early, let’s wait a bit more.” Rhee didn’t even turn to face him, and waved her hand dismissively.
Quan Hao helplessly glanced at his son, “…”
It wasn’t that he wasn’t helping him, but simply that he was at a loss as to what to do.
“Mom, my darling needs to take a nap,” Quan Jingwu finally spoke up.
Jian Qing looked at him, her eyes clearly expressing confusion.
When did she ever develop a habit of taking afternoon naps?
“A nap?” Rhee looked at Quan Jingwu, then turned to look at Jian Qing. A flash of realization lit up her eyes, and she suddenly agreed, “A nap sounds good, we should get going.”
Yes, they should nap. Hopefully, they would make a cute little grandchild for her soon.
Quan Jingwu watched as his mother completely misconstrued his words. Not bothering to correct her, Jian Qing twitched her mouth forcefully. Why did she feel like her future mother-in-law had just gone off on the wrong track?
“Be careful,” Quan Hao rose quickly to support his wife, who was getting up hastily.
The corners of Rhee’s eyes crinkled as she smiled and dragged Quan Hao towards the door, “You don’t have to see us off. Little Qingqing, we’ll go shopping and chat when I have time.”
Jian Qing’s lips curved slightly as she gave a small nod.
After seeing the couple out and watching them drive off, Quan Jingwu and Jian Qing returned to their apartment.
Just as they sat down on the sofa, Quan Jingwu’s phone beeped, indicating he had received a message.
He unlocked his phone to read it, and saw that it was from his mother.
[Son, hurry up and work hard. Your mother has already started preparing to become a grandma!]
Quan Jingwu raised an eyebrow, his lips curling slightly.
“Xiaojing, you look strange!” Jian Qing turned her head just in time to see the smirk on his face.
Quan Jingwu lowered his gaze to meet hers, a mischievous grin plastered on his face, “My mom sent me a message. Want to take a look?”
Jian Qing looked at his peculiar expression, then turned to his phone, “What is it?”
He stretched out his arm, handing her the phone. His other arm circled around her waist, drawing her into his arms.
After Jian Qing clicked open the message and read it, she was immediately at a loss for words.
“Darling, since your future mother-in-law has spoken, shouldn’t we make haste?” Quan Jingwu’s chin rested on her shoulder, watching her reaction. He chuckled lightly.
Jian Qing cast him a sidelong look, and calmly untangled his hand around her waist, throwing the phone back at him, “You can take your time.”
Without waiting for his response, Jian Qing turned around and decisively went upstairs.
Watching her quick steps, Quan Jingwu lazily leaned against the sofa, not moving to chase after her.
After all, he had to limit his teasing. If he took it too far, he would be the one who’d end up uncomfortable.
Only when the sound of a closing door came from upstairs, did Quan Jingwu finally shift his gaze. The corner of his eye caught sight of an unopened box on the table. He reached for it.
When he touched the sender’s name, his eyes suddenly darkened.
Meng’er!
He remembered the contact named Meng’er from the call he made at the Qianshi Restaurant to his darling’s number. Who exactly was this person?
Looking at the beautifully packaged chocolates, he suddenly felt the urge to throw them in the trash. Of course, he didn’t end up doing so, and instead placed the box back on the table.
His darling was his. What was a box of chocolates? If anyone dared to snare her away from him, they could just try.
With this thought, Quan Jingwu’s thin lips curled into a cold smile. He got up and headed upstairs.
…
At the Quan Family Residence,
When Rhee, supported by Quan Hao, walked into the living room with her bandaged foot, she gave Madam Quan quite a shock.
“What happened? Rhee, what happened to your foot?”
“Mom, you don’t need to worry, I just twisted it. The doctor overreacted and wrapped it up like a pig’s trotter,” Rhee sat down on the sofa, reassuring Madam Quan.
“What do you mean ‘just’? Are your bones okay?” Madam Quan asked worriedly, her voice filled with concern.
“I’m fine, you can ask Ahao.”
“Mom, everything’s fine. The doctor said that with some rest, it’ll heal,” Quan Hao reassured, taking his wife’s cue.
Upon hearing that her son was not concerned, Madam Quan was relieved, “I thought you were headed to Shijin Haoting. How did you end up like this?”
“Uh…” As Rhee’s eyes flickered with embarrassment. She couldn’t very well say that she had been caught whilst spying at her future daughter-in-law’s place, could she? How would she ever live down the shame?
With an awkward smile, she tried to brush it off ambiguously, “Nothing much, just got excited upon meeting Jingwu’s girlfriend and managed to sprain my ankle.”
“So, you met her. What is she like?” asked Madam Quan.
“Very good, just like how Dad described her,” Rhee focused on praising.
“Then why didn’t you bring her back for me to meet?”
“Jingwu that rascal is too busy spending time alone with his woman, and didn’t lend her to us to bring home.”
“I thought Jingwu had work today?”
“He went back to have dinner with his woman.”
Upon hearing this, Madam Quan chuckled, “Seems like all the men in the Quan family have the same trait. Jingwu is the best pupil who surpassed his master.”
While saying this, Madam Quan shot a glance at Quan Hao who was beside her.
Feeling embarrassed with her mother-in-law’s teasing, Rhee gave a bashful smile.
“Mom, your birthday is coming up in a few days. Why don’t we take this opportunity to have Jingwu bring her home for a meal?”
Having been mother-in-law and daughter-in-law for so many years now, Madam Quan could read between the lines. The corners of her eyes crinkled into a gentle, tender smile.
