Chapter 227: Chapter 227 They Are Migrating
"Look, they’ve been walking in places where the sun doesn’t shine," Zhou Xiaoliang said.
It was approaching dusk, and sunlight was casting large shadows between the high-rise buildings. Those Alien Species were traveling by using these shadows. Whenever they encountered gaps between shadows, they would leap across abruptly, as if they were terrified that the sunlight would scorch their skin.
The situation was somewhat abnormal.
The procession of Alien Species grew denser and longer, and more and more of them were carrying objects. Some were carrying indistinguishably mangled corpses, while others bore dark green sticky clumps, enclosing milky-white eggs inside.
"Are they... moving house?" Yan Xiao asked hesitantly, swallowing uncomfortably.
"When the climate becomes abnormal, ants move their nests. It’s probably because they sense that an Ice Age is fast approaching, so they need to move to new burrows," Han Yi said indifferently.
Han Jiaojiao, holding a little boy’s hand, also came over. She gasped when she saw the streets below teeming with Alien Species. Thankfully, the child was not tall enough to see out the window, or else the scene below would have certainly scared him to tears.
Han Yi turned away from the window. "Grab your things and let’s go. It’s getting dark," he said.
"Brother Han... The Empress has come out too. They won’t suddenly rush over here, will they...?" Yan Xiao said, a bit scared.
Han Jiaojiao looked toward the end of the street and did indeed see an especially large and bloated Alien Species moving slowly within the group. Only when it came closer could she see clearly that the Empress was unable to travel long distances on her own and was being carried forward by a group of Alien Species. Six or seven fit and tall Guards stood on both sides, keeping a watchful eye on the procession of Alien Species while protecting the Empress.
So many Alien Species—at least two thousand—if they all rushed into the Library Building...
The consequences were unimaginable.
"They won’t come in," Han Yi said calmly. "The Alien Species are migrating before the sun sets. It’s possible that tonight’s weather will be very bad, and they must reach the new burrow before the change... We also need to hurry back."
Han Yi grasped Han Jiaojiao’s hand. A massive spatial vortex floated between various bookshelves as Han Yi threw all the books on this floor—including shelves, desks, and cabinets—into it.
The little boy’s eyes widened.
Han Yi deliberately accelerated, taking them from floor to floor, gathering items until the entire Library Building was scoured clean, leaving nothing behind.
The sky was growing dark, and the street outside was almost empty of the migrating Alien Species.
As everyone exited the Library Building, Han Yi opened the space, and clanged out an off-road vehicle.
A few Alien Species at the end of the migrating procession were not too far away. Perhaps in a rush to keep up, although they heard the noise behind them, they never bothered to look back.
Everyone quickly got into the car and left Xinfeng City via another road.
Sitting in the car with the little boy, Han Jiaojiao looked outside at the weather from time to time.
The sun was setting, the evening sky was brilliantly fiery, and everything seemed normal, serene. But Han Jiaojiao knew that Han Yi’s guess was right. The Alien Species must have sensed something wrong with the weather to have set out early.
Upon returning to the base, Han Yi summoned Lu Changyuan and informed him of the possible extreme weather tonight.
They couldn’t predict what exactly would happen—it could be torrential rain, hail, anything was possible. The only certainty was that the weather would be extremely severe for the Alien Species to risk exposure to the sun and start their migration early.
The base immediately went on alert. Everyone participated, making emergency reinforcements and waterproofing the few ongoing projects at the base, especially the newly established planting greenhouses, which couldn’t afford any mistakes.
Everyone was busy until 9 p.m. before completing their tasks. Although the weather still showed no abnormal signs, everyone felt a bit tense. The unknown is always frightening.
Late into the night, the wind outside began to pick up. It grew stronger and stronger, until even the doors and windows rattled. Sounds of breaking came from outside, jolting Han Jiaojiao awake!
Han Yi sat silently on the edge of the bed; sensing the movement behind him, he turned to look at Han Jiaojiao.
"...Don’t worry, go to sleep."
"Brother." Han Jiaojiao sat up, rubbing her eyes that had been blurred by sleepiness, looked toward the frenzied shadows of the trees swaying in the wind outside the window, and couldn’t help but feel anxious, "Will Xiaogua, Xiaodou, and Cotton Candy be okay..."
"They’re fine, they’re all sleeping in their nests." Han Yi comforted her, "Look, even Pepper is calmer than you."
Pepper was sprawled on the carpet beside the bed, sleeping soundly, apparently completely undisturbed by the noise outside.
Han Jiaojiao hugged Han Yi’s arm, moved her entire body closer, and murmured, "I wonder if it will rain..."
Han Yi gently patted her back, "Even if it rains, there’s no need to worry. The drainage system of this ancient city is even better than that of modern cities, there won’t be any waterlogging, rest assured..."
"Why is that?"
"In the cities, the ground is all concrete, and the rainwater has a hard time seeping below the surface..."
"I see..." Han Jiaojiao, lulled by his gentle pats, yawned and said, "...I hope everything will be okay tomorrow..."
"Go to sleep, with your brother here, don’t worry."
"Mmm..."
The wind, no one knows when, had stopped.
When Han Jiaojiao opened her eyes, everything outside was silent. Han Yi was not there; he must have gone to the front hall to discuss matters with Lu Changyuan.
She sat up on the bed, and the blanket that had been draped over her slipped to the ground. She immediately shivered from the cold.
It’s so cold...
The blanket must have been added by her brother later, as they initially had only a thin velvet blanket.
Han Jiaojiao picked the blanket back up, wrapped it around herself, shuffled in her slippers around the rosewood screen inlaid with cloud-dragon patterns and jade, and came to the main room to open the slightly ajar door—
"Achoo!..."
The weather seemed to have transitioned to autumn overnight, with yellow leaves scattered everywhere, creating a mess. Many of the plants in the courtyard had been uprooted, the small saplings snapped by the wind, and although the old, thick trees were unharmed, their canopies had also turned somewhat yellow.
There were also a few pieces of broken glazed tiles on the ground, likely blown down by last night’s storm, now shining with a golden light in the sun.
Han Jiaojiao, hugging the blanket, stood at the doorway in a daze when Han Yi had already returned with a few people.
Upon seeing Han Jiaojiao standing outside, his brow furrowed deeply, "Come back in, it’s gotten colder outside."
Han Jiaojiao smiled shyly, wrapped herself in the blanket, and shrank back inside the door.
Han Yi had the people clean up the courtyard, then he followed inside as well. He first took Han Jiaojiao’s hand to feel her warmth, and then he scooped her up sideways and placed her on the bed.
"We should change the clothes in the wardrobe; the summer clothes won’t be needed for a while."
As he said this, he turned and opened the adjacent oak wardrobe, began clearing out the clothes inside, then opened Ring Space and, with a bang, bang, took out several large luggage bags filled with Han Jiaojiao’s clothes.
Han Jiaojiao lay on the bed and asked, "Does everyone else have clothes to wear?"
"Yes, the clothes we collected from the clothing factory and the mall yesterday will come in handy." Han Yi replied, his head down as he sifted through the clothes.
