Chapter 501: Chapter Five Hundred and One: Attracting Attention
What exactly the task entailed, Liang Jiuhui said he didn’t know yet—he could only find out later. After all, it had been snowing these last few days, and due to that situation outside, nobody could leave.
"When we went out to collect supplies before, we met a meteorologist from before the apocalypse. He said a blizzard would come soon, and indeed, it really did come,"
Su Jin wanted to remind Liang Jiuhui.
"Really? What else did he say?"
Liang Jiuhui indeed became interested. In the ’S’ city base, there was no one who could observe the weather. Originally he thought that the weather in the apocalypse was ever-changing. Could there really be someone who could predict the current weather?
"He also said... that this blizzard would last a very long time, a very long time,"
Su Jin said.
It seemed that everyone thought the snow would stop after a few days. However, thinking that way was normal, yet if this blizzard was not taken seriously, the repercussions it caused could create a domino effect.
All she could do was try her best to remind Liang Jiuhui, who, as the base leader, should consider all possible future events.
A long time?
Upon hearing this, Liang Jiuhui indeed fell into thought. Although these were the words of an unknown person, since he could predict the blizzard’s arrival, his subsequent conjectures might also be somewhat accurate.
"I understand,"
Liang Jiuhui said.
If that was the case, then he really did need to make sure all aspects were prepared.
Su Jin and Lu Hao were on their way back with Mao Qiqi and Lian Jiyue when they coincidentally ran into Liang Jiuqing and Xing Taining.
Liang Jiuqing, not short in stature, walking next to Xing Taining, who also had the advantage of height, seemed surprisingly well-matched.
The two, who had been talking, cheerfully approached upon seeing Su Jin and others.
"Su Jin, long time no see,"
Liang Jiuqing ran up and greeted happily. She knew Su Jin had returned but had been tied up with other matters and hadn’t had the chance to meet her yet.
"It really has been a while. You’ve become a lot prettier,"
Su Jin said with a smile. Perhaps it was because of the recent overcast days, but Liang Jiuqing seemed paler.
"Hahaha, what being pretty? Anyway, someone has taken me,"
Liang Jiuqing proudly pulled Xing Taining to her side and announced.
"For a girl, being pretty is good; otherwise, if your man runs off with someone else, you’ll be crying,"
Liang Jiuhui’s voice came from behind, causing a previously beaming Liang Jiuqing to pout.
"Brother, you really have a sharp tongue,"
Liang Jiuqing complained.
"Don’t worry, I won’t run away,"
Xing Taining declared publicly, making Su Jin feel a bit awkward.
Liang Jiuqing then looked defiantly at Liang Jiuhui, satisfied. Her taste wasn’t that bad after all.
"Su Jin, Lu Hao, I went looking for you earlier, but you both weren’t around,"
Xing Taining came over and said.
It was then that Liang Jiuhui and Liang Jiuqing realized that Xing Taining actually knew Su Jin and Lu Hao.
"So you know each other?"
Liang Jiuqing exclaimed in surprise, as she had never heard Xing Taining mention Su Jin and Lu Hao before.
"Back when we were in D City, Captain Xing helped us once,"
Su Jin said with a smile.
"What does Captain Xing want from us?"
Lu Hao then asked.
"I originally wanted to ask about my brother’s base, but with the sudden snowstorm, I’m afraid I won’t be able to go,"
Xing Taining sighed.
How did Xing Taining’s brother also know Su Jin and Lu Hao?
Liang Jiuqing and Liang Jiuhui were even more amazed. True to the Heart Talk Team, they had been to many places and knew everybody who was somebody.
"Come over for dinner at our place tomorrow evening, it’ll be a good opportunity for everyone to get together,"
Su Jin said with a smile, standing in the bustling corridor talking, indeed drawing quite a few glances their way.
"Yes, yes, we’ll definitely come over tomorrow evening,"
Liang Jiuqing said excitedly. She loved going to Su Jin’s home, not so much for the food, but for the warm, lively family atmosphere that made the cold Apocalypse feel a bit more homelike.
After saying goodbye to Liang Jiuqing and the others, Su Jin headed towards the door, watching the snowstorm that was still going on outside. Lu Hao took out a foldable umbrella from his pocket and carefully opened it for Su Jin first.
Lian Jiyue simply scooped up Mao Qiqi with one arm and, holding an umbrella with the other, followed them out.
The handsome looks and tall statures of the two attracted many envious glances. Many bored people stuck at home looked out their windows and coincidentally witnessed this scene.
"It makes me want to start dating,"
"Come off it, who has the time to date now? At most, you end up as teammates,"
"Exactly, and I’ve heard many couples betray each other while fighting zombies, ending up as enemies,"
"Love or bread, you can only choose one,"
"..."
That afternoon, someone discovered that the mission center at the base had started issuing missions again.
Due to the snow, the base had discouraged going out, so missions had been halted, but unexpectedly, new missions were now being posted.
However, when everyone saw the only mission available, they walked away disappointed.
It was a mission to clear snow outside the base. Those who joined the snow clearing team would earn 10 Crystal Cores per day.
Only 10 Crystal Cores?
Some thought they were seeing things. With only 10 Crystal Cores a day, who would want to go out in the cold? It was better to rest well these days and wait until the snow stopped to go out.
However, some people still took the mission, mostly ordinary people without Special Abilities. They wouldn’t pass up any chance to earn Crystal Cores. Earning 10 Cores a day, they could buy a kilo of food at the Heart Talk Convenience Store after just two or three days; why not?
Of course, some Special Ability Users took the mission too, like Jian Zongzheng and his idle companions.
The snow clearing mission was not like the previous ones that required forming teams. Even individuals could take the mission, with a quota temporarily set at 1000 participants, treating Special Ability Users and ordinary people the same.
This idea had also come from Liang Jiuhui after a meeting with the management.
He had a premonition that this snowstorm, just like the one Su Jin had encountered before, might last a very long time.
If so, the roads outside the base would become increasingly harder to navigate if not cleared, not only making it difficult for arriving Survivors but also significantly increasing the number of Zombies around the base, hence the collective decision for this method.
"I had thought that the thick snow outside would limit the Zombies’ movements, but Wei Junhao and his encounter reminded me that while it might restrict them a bit, it’s minimal. The footage captured by today’s drone further proves this point,"
Liang Jiuhui said as he opened a video on the screen, which showed Zombies in the snow.
