Chapter 671: Chapter 671: Mutant Animal
Because they suspected that Zombie Rats might have come here, Su Jin collected items with great speed while Lu Hao always stayed by her side to protect her.
When the two reached the area under the ventilation window, they found a platform covered in dark bloodstains with several sniper rifles and ammunition arranged on top. The clothes on the ground also indicated that the bodies had probably been eaten.
"Did the zombie animals come in from here?"
Su Jin looked at the small mesh ventilation window, which was obviously used for scouting and attacking from inside.
The warehouse was likely designed to prevent rats and insects, so there were no holes in the ground, and even the two iron doors and the walls around them were gapless. The only place with gaps was this row of ventilation windows.
Su Jin also saw dark bloodstains on one of the ventilation window’s bars.
"It’s possible. They shot people who found the warehouse from outside, and it’s probably those bodies that attracted the zombie animals,"
Lu Hao speculated.
Su Jin nodded, ready to continue gathering supplies from the space. They had collected from the middle upwards before, and now they had to collect from top to bottom again.
"Let me carry you, these stairs are quite narrow,"
Lu Hao picked up Su Jin again, who had gotten used to Lu Hao’s sudden display of protective behavior, securely wrapping her arms around his neck. But as she inadvertently looked up, she froze.
Lu Hao felt his little wife in his arms suddenly stiffen and asked, "What’s wrong?"
Su Jin’s arms wrapped around Lu Hao’s neck unconsciously tightened, "Up there, it just flashed for a moment."
Lu Hao looked up, and the lighting above the warehouse was insufficient; the dark dome above seemed normal. Yet, the occasional flashes against the dense blackness were enough to send chills down his spine.
If he wasn’t mistaken, those were probably bats.
"If there’s danger later, don’t worry about too much, just go in first,"
Lu Hao said in a low voice, unable to let Su Jin be in danger.
"Let’s go down first,"
Su Jin remembered that the others were below, still unaware of the danger here. But why hadn’t the bats attacked them after so long?
"There’s light, so those probably aren’t zombie bats,"
Lu Hao said, which was the only explanation he could think of. If they were zombie bats, they would have attacked while they were still outside. So the ones above were likely mutant bats that ate humans.
As the two went down, Su Jin didn’t dare waste any more time and collected all the supplies from the platforms they passed, and now only the largest batch of supplies below was left.
"Lin Xiuyuan, can you seal off everything above us with your ability?"
Su Jin asked.
"The space above? Why seal it off?"
Lin Xiuyuan raised his head and looked around. Freezing the entire warehouse ceiling with ice would consume some abilities, but Su Jin could replenish his abilities, so that wasn’t a problem. However, he wondered why they would need to seal it off all of a sudden.
"There’s nothing up there,"
Lu Guanhai looked up. There were no zombies.
"Look carefully, we only saw them from high up, that dark ring on the ceiling, they’re probably bats,"
Lu Hao said with a serious expression.
"Bats?!"
Huang Yunxiang and Lin Tianhui covered their mouths, trying not to scream. They didn’t notice anything at first, but after Lu Hao pointed it out, they also felt that the top looked too strange—it wasn’t a regular circle at all if you looked closely!
"Oh my god, why aren’t they attacking us?"
Tian Yongyi felt he was about to wet himself with fear, dreading that a bat might suddenly drop from above.
"The light filtering through the exhaust fan suggests they may well be mutant bats,"
Lu Hao said, pointing to a ring of exhaust windows above the warehouse.
"Son, don’t just stand there, hurry up and seal it off, it’s already afternoon,"
Huang Yunxiang urged anxiously.
"I know,"
Lin Xiuyuan didn’t waste any more time, as the light shining through the exhaust windows was now slanted, casting an area into shadow. They had to speed up.
While the family was talking, Su Jin had been continuously gathering supplies in the vicinity; they needed to leave before the bats became aggressive.
Lin Xiuyuan had never felt as urgent as he did in that moment; the warehouse was just too large, and he was both nervous and anxious, fearing a sudden attack from the bats above.
"Son, don’t be nervous. If worse comes to worst, we’ll be here,"
Lin Cheng comforted from the side, reasoning that since the bats weren’t zombie bats but mutant bats, the worst they’d face from a bite would be a non-fatal wound.
"Xiuyuan, I’ll help you,"
Guan Shouzhong said and prepared to begin sealing from the other side using his Metal Element Ability.
"No need, I’ll be done in a moment,"
Lin Xiuyuan calmed down, reasoning that the Ice Element would be harder to control if it intersected with the Metal Element, so he preferred to use only the Ice-Element Special Abilities.
Having said that, Lin Xiuyuan started to go all out, and rapidly, a transparent layer of ice flew over their heads. Under the external light, it glistened like crystal. In less than ten minutes, a transparent protective layer was complete.
"Beautiful,"
Xiang Sanjin couldn’t help but praise, finally feeling relieved himself.
"Su Jin is really quick at gathering supplies,"
Tian Yongyi had been watching Su Jin gathering supplies and was seeing a Space Element Ability User gather so rapidly for the first time.
The supplies here were packed in clear PE bags, strapped to wooden pallets. Su Jin had placed all the supplies on the other side of the space stream to prevent them from being mixed up with other items in the space.
After another twenty-odd minutes, Su Jin had finally finished collecting all the supplies here, leaving the warehouse empty and echoing.
Bang!
The thing everyone feared still happened; the first mutant bat landed on the transparent ice layer—it was a pure black bat as big as an adult rooster. They could all see its gaping maw and sharp fangs since the ice layer was transparent.
Lin Cheng, who had just thought a bite from a mutant bat wouldn’t be a big deal, suddenly changed his mind. With such a huge mouth, could it bite off his arm in one go?
"Thank goodness, it held,"
Lu Guanhai and the others also felt a chill run down their spines, and at that moment, other mutant bats also began to descend, some even attempting to bite through the ice layer.
"I’ll go start the car,"
Tian Yongyi understood they needed to leave quickly as more mutant bats were swooping down from above.
Guan Shouzhong nodded. The warehouse’s main gate had already been closed when they arrived, just in case something suddenly entered from outside, so now he needed to open it again.
The door was slowly opened, their vehicle was not parked far, but they still had to get through a stretch of wire fencing to reach it.
Lu Hao, watching everyone run towards the exit, suddenly remembered the exhaust windows above and immediately yelled to everyone: "Run!"
