Chapter 589: Chapter 589: Parting on Bad Terms
Director Zhang grabbed An Zhiyuan, "Chief An, my daughter and I will not be joining you for dinner. We’re worried about leaving my wife alone. You all go ahead and eat. Look, this nice housewarming party we’ve turned into a mess. In a couple of days, I’ll personally cook and invite you and your spouse over as a way to make amends."
An Zhiyuan, of course, understood that Director Zhang was in no mood for eating right now.
"Don’t worry, just take some time to soothe your sister-in-law and help her open up."
Director Zhang nodded and saw An Zhiyuan out.
An Zhiyuan saw Hu Biao and Sister Wei holding Huzi, standing at the door and not going in.
"Hu Biao, hurry up and bring your wife and child in for dinner. What are you doing standing out here? Being punished to stand?"
Hu Biao shook his head, "Chief An, I can’t eat. We won’t eat; frankly, it’s because of Sister Zhang’s near-mishap, we are too ashamed to join the meal." He, a grown man, found it really hard to say.
His own wife has no sense of the bigger picture, and already petty on regular days, this little issue caused such a huge mess, it was unbearable to watch, and Hu Biao felt terrible inside.
Today everything turned out alright, but had there been an accident, he wouldn’t even know how to atone for it.
An Zhiyuan slapped Hu Biao’s head from behind, "Look at yourself, what do you look like? A grown man, and yet less reasonable than a woman. It’s only a small matter; once it’s over, it should be over. Still dwelling on it, are you a woman or what? You’re so petty it’s smaller than the eye of a needle."
Huzi reached out his hand, "I want pig’s feet, I want dumplings." The child had no clue what had happened; he was just acting on instinct.
An Zhiyuan scooped up Huzi, "Let’s go eat dumplings and pig’s feet. If your parents don’t want to eat, let them starve. Our Huzi needs to eat his fill." He then went straight into the house.
Sitting on An Zhiyuan’s shoulder, Huzi laughed and called out, "Dad, Mom, come on! I don’t want you to be hungry. Let’s eat dumplings together! And pig’s feet, okay?"
Hu Biao and Sister Wei were frozen in place, Bai Xiao tugged at both of them, "Come on in, how can you not be as sensible as a child?"
The front door closed.
Everyone sat together and continued to eat, but the mood was obviously not as pleasant as before. Everyone ate quietly, inevitably thinking about the earlier incident, and even the delicious food started to taste different.
Sister Wei cradled Huzi, who held a dumpling in his hand, enjoying every bite.
She looked ashamed, and even the thickest-faced person could no longer be brazen at this point.
"I’m sorry, Doctor Bai, I went too far today. I truly apologize for ruining your housewarming with Chief An. I am just wretched."
Bai Xiao was surprised to hear these words coming from someone like Sister Wei; her realization was enough to leave anyone speechless.
What took you so long?
The issue itself was minor, and had it been blown out of proportion, it would’ve been ridiculous—a bloodbath over a meal of dumplings.
Of course, Bai Xiao didn’t believe Li Jiao attempted suicide over something Sister Wei said—a person’s desire to die cannot arise so spontaneously. But who dares say it wasn’t triggered by Sister Wei? 𝒏𝙤𝙫𝒑𝙪𝙗.𝙘𝒐𝙢
Sometimes a single word can be the last straw that breaks the camel’s back.
"Everyone, just eat. Let’s not talk anymore. You have to finish all the food I’ve prepared otherwise it wouldn’t do justice to my hard work and everyone’s help today," Bai Xiao urged everyone to eat.
The meal ended on an unhappy note.
