Chapter 643: Chapter 643: Scamming
The next day was her day off, followed by Saturday and Sunday, giving her three days of rest.
It seemed like last night’s argument hadn’t even caused a stir, as it was forcefully suppressed by An Zhiyuan, leaving Bai Xiao lying in bed, ironically mocking her own loyalty blindness.
She knew, though, that the mission An Zhiyuan hadn’t mentioned must be related to being an undercover agent; otherwise, why would they need a dazzlingly beautiful woman?
It must be pretending to be a couple, or a husband and wife, to catch someone or gather intelligence.
Alas, she couldn’t think about it anymore, or she would start imagining An Zhiyuan and the beauty’s romantic tango—an unquestionable responsibility of his, and she had to step aside.
That is his wife, after all.
She got up to tidy the house, which seemed less lively without An Zhiyuan around.
Bai Xiao changed into a dress and prepared to stroll the streets, a place she hadn’t really explored yet, an opportunity she seldom had.
With her wallet and keys, she headed out.
That day, she wandered the streets, enjoyed a unique meal of crossing-the-bridge noodles, and only returned at sunset.
As she entered the building, an elderly lady suddenly slipped in front of her, teetering wildly; the old lady let out a cry of pain and would have tumbled down if Bai Xiao hadn’t caught her just in time.
"Old lady, are you alright?"
"How could I be alright? You try falling and see if you’re alright!" the old lady scolded, rubbing her ankle without lifting her head.
So much for good deeds going unrewarded.
Helping the old lady up, "Let’s see if you’re hurt; otherwise, should I call an ambulance?" Bai Xiao thought about escaping the situation.
She really had tried to play the saint for once and look at all the trouble it brought.
"It’s just my foot feeling uncomfortable, no need for an ambulance," the old lady said, lifting her head as their eyes met.
One could tell the old lady must have been beautiful in her youth, despite her sharp tongue, she appeared to be a dignified person, not someone looking to scam people.
After all, it was still 1988, and people were generally honest; scams like this weren’t common.
The old lady obviously hesitated for a moment.
"Well! If you are fine, then I..." Bai Xiao wanted to say she was leaving.
But the old woman grabbed her arm, "Don’t you think about leaving now, having bumped into me and knocked me over and just walking away; that won’t do."
Bai Xiao really rolled her eyes then.
Just when she thought people were honest, she actually ran into a scammer.
"Old lady, I was several steps away from you when you came down the stairs."
Good intentions really taken for granted.
Bai Xiao inwardly cursed herself for being foolish.
"Anyway, it was you who knocked me over, and you can’t just ignore it now. These youngsters today just want to hit and run."
The old lady’s barrage of words left Bai Xiao truly helpless; it wasn’t the age of cameras and mobile recordings yet.
She really couldn’t produce any evidence.
Alright then, since she insisted it was her doing, she’d use her special ability to treat her for a while and then take her to the hospital for a check-up.
The doctor surely couldn’t falsely claim, could he, that the old lady was ill?
"Ah! My foot hurts."
Bai Xiao helped her up, "My apartment is just upstairs; you can rest there for a while, and then I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up."
It took quite an effort to help the old lady into her home.
