Chapter 101: Chapter 92 Do you have any interest in changing jobs?_1

Apparently, Dou Jiao had no sense of shame at all. Instead, she spoke with increasing smugness, "Hehe, Little Brother Tang, there’s no need to be so modest. I am quite good looking after all, I’m not lying. What, you don’t think your big sister is beautiful?"

"Eh, Sister Jiaojiao is certainly very beautiful, but... being a little more modest would be better." Tang Qing clearly didn’t dare to say something as mood-killing as ’you are not the most beautiful’, because you should never compare a woman’s looks with those of other women. That’s just asking for trouble.

"That’s better. Little Brother Tang, who is this?" Dou Jiao glanced at Sun Chao and asked. At this point, she also realized that Tang Qing was the main person in charge, so she asked out of courtesy.

"This is my brother, Sun Chao." Tang Qing replied. Although Sun Chao was his subordinate, Tang Qing was preparing to groom him as a close confidant, so he had to pay attention to these details in front of outsiders.

"Hello Sun Chao." Dou Jiao greeted.

"Hello, Miss Dou." Sun Chao gave a slight smile and then returned to his usual expression, vigilantly scanning the surroundings, having fully assumed the role of a bodyguard.

Seeing Sun Chao resume his indifferent expression towards her, Dou Jiao felt a sudden surge of indignation. Did she really lack appeal?

Humph!

Dou Jiao turned to Tang Qing. "Little Brother Tang, what kind of business does your family run?"

"We sell clothes. We only started not long ago." Tang Qing replied.

The two of them were walking and chatting. However, it was mostly Dou Jiao asking questions and Tang Qing providing the responses, while Sun Chao continued to act impassively.

By now, Tang Qing had been led by Dou Jiao to the VIP reception room inside. As Dou Jiao poured tea, she continued to chat.

"Little Brother Tang, the truth is I have this kind of personality. I don’t like to beat around the bush, and I’m not afraid that people will say I’m a social climber. Let me be frank with you, and don’t spread this around. Many times, some people do have innate advantages, such as being beautiful, which can greatly increase their chances of success. But that can also be a disadvantage. Why? Because they’re beautiful, everyone wants a piece of them. Regardless of whether they really want to purchase something or not, they go to great lengths to give the illusion that they do. And then? I found out that after putting in so much effort, I still wasn’t as good as a regular salesperson, which I obviously couldn’t accept."

Setting the tea in front of Tang Qing and Sun Chao, Dou Jiao continued:

"Also, the chances of encountering wealthy people are slim to begin with. Approaching people indiscriminately might be fine for others, but given my appearance and assuming I attend to at least ten customers per day as a minimum standard, that would be more than 3000 a year. Can you guess the odds that I will encounter bad people, danger, or harassment? As a woman, can I ensure my safety every single time? Obviously, I’m not willing to take this risk, and this is just a conservative estimate. Even now, many of them still bother me with constant phone calls, and quite a few come to the shop pretending they want to buy something, but just want to talk to me. It’s unbearably annoying.

Fortunately though, my family, while not staggeringly wealthy, is certainly well-off enough to ensure I won’t starve. I have no need to plunge myself into endless harassment and put up with those nasty men. Dealing with them is truly troublesome. Many people give you hope time and again, only to let you down over and over again. So, I’d rather focus on some powerful major clients. Even if I am harassed, at least the hope they offer is a bit more practical, and the success rate is higher. As it is now, my performance in the store is merely average, but the effort and time that I put in is just one-fifth, or even less, of those with similar achievements. Hehe, don’t you think I’m actually the winner?"

Having finished, Dou Jiao looked at Tang Qing with an inquiring eye, as if she were waiting for Tang Qing to agree with her views.

Upon seeing this, Tang Qing naturally knew what to say.

"What you say makes a lot of sense, I’m at a loss for words." Tang Qing was truly amazed by Dou Jiao’s logic. It was simply brilliant, and he couldn’t find any fault with it. He really couldn’t label her as a gold digger or someone who focuses on one’s position or power. In terms of business logic, Dou Jiao’s behavior is praiseworthy. She weighs the benefits and costs, and makes the optimal choice instead of blindly committing.

Now thinking about it, the supposedly snobbish salespeople in novels aren’t all that detestable. They’re just making choices that they consider to be the right ones. Even though chances of success for people like this aren’t big, they essentially live above average lives. Otherwise, this type of people would have been eliminated from the industry long ago. Their existence proves that there’s nothing wrong with their survival rules. Of course, those who are ignored would definitely feel hurt.

Tang Qing’s comment made Dou Jiao laugh:

"Hehehe, Little Brother Tang, you have a way with words. I don’t know why but I feel a sense of kinship towards you. I just want to share my inner thoughts with you. Before I started working, my father told me that a person must always aim for endeavours with high success rates. Otherwise, you’ll just be busy all the time without making a significant impact. If you expend energy and time on random tasks without using your brain, you might think that you’ve gained some experience, but in the end you achieve nothing. You need to know how to calculate your optimal cost-benefit ratio. Just like me, if I double my effort, my income might only increase by ten percent. It’s really not worth it, too exhausting. Lastly, never put your hopes on luck.

Hmm, let me think. There’s a famous quote, I forgot who said it, but it roughly goes like this - ’I don’t live my life depending on gifts of luck, but I plan on how to prosper using luck.’ Spending blind time on doing rather than on thinking about how to do, wouldn’t be of any benefit. I’ve shared all this with you not because I have a motive, but because I hope that Little Brother Tang won’t think I’m too opportunistic. Hehe, remember to come to me when you want to buy a car, okay?"

Eh...

Tang Qing was completely swayed by Dou Jiao’s lengthy discourse earlier. The story was filled with inspiration and he admired her for it. These were indeed words of wisdom.

But within a few seconds, she made a twist that revealed her true intentions. Is this really okay?

"Ah... oh, okay. If I need to buy a Volkswagen in the future, I’ll definitely come to you, Sister Jiaojiao." Tang Qing quickly said.

The fact that Dou Jiao had such knowledge took Tang Qing by utter surprise. Her father must come from an exceptional background. In fact, he was already picturing a life of privilege as a second-generation wealthy kid.

"Alright, let’s go make the payment," Dou Jiao said with a smile. Leading Tang Qing to the finance department, she made a payment of 670,000 which will let them hit the road with temporary plates in no time.

Next came all sorts of procedures. Tang Qing didn’t understand any of it and simply signed where he was told and paid when needed. After signing a bunch of strange documents, he could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Buying things was so much trouble.

"Jiaojiao, would you like to switch jobs?" Tang Qing suggested, as their business was about done.

From their conversation, he really liked Dou Jiao’s personality, and had an urge to recruit her. She might act a bit cunning but Tang Qing sensed it was only a front. From the way she handled the purchase, he knew she was highly competent and showed great potential as a formidable businesswoman.

"Little brother Tang, want to introduce me to a job? I hope it’s not something improper as I won’t take it," Dou Jiao teased, laughing. She was no impulsive young girl. Even if Tang Qing didn’t seem like a bad person, she wouldn’t accept a job offer from someone she just met.

"Of course, it’s a proper job. I’m planning to start a company and I need someone to help manage the business in the day-to-day. The workload is light and the benefits are generous," Tang Qing continued, expecting Dou Jiao’s refusal. He didn’t think himself a universally beloved figure. If Dou Jiao had agreed straight away, he would have gotten suspicious himself.

"Hmm....no, why would I want another job? Mine is relaxing, the environment is good, not much work to do, never overtime, not dirty or tiring, and the pay is decent," Dou Jiao responded after some thought. She was happy in her current job and saw no reason to quit and take on an uncertain future. She was used to the work environment here and had no interest in adjusting to a new one. Once comfortable with something, she was resistant to change. Hence, she didn’t even bother to inquire about the nature of Tang Qing’s company.

Tang Qing was speechless and tried to tempt her, saying, "Jiaojiao, can’t you show a little ambition? The pay and benefits at my company are very good!"

"No, I like it here. It’s easy and comfortable. Besides, what do I need much money for?" Dou Jiao responded, looking at Tang Qing curiously.

Her expression made him feel crude discussing money and benefits. He felt as if he was conning a little girl with candy. However, this sparked a competitive streak in him.

"You should try to be more independent, earn money to buy a house or a car," he said, ready to use another trick to lure her in, much like the future prospects scam used by pyramid schemes.

"I have a house, but a car is beyond my reach right now. I’ll get there eventually. When I find a husband, he can buy one," she smirked.

Tang Qing was struck speechless by her retort. In a profoundly disappointed tone, he said, "You...you can’t expect your future husband to support you, can you?"

"Of course not. We’ll earn and buy one together. No matter what you say, I am not going to work for you just for your salary," Dou Jiao pouted, looking extremely resolute.

"You...you lack ambition," Tang Qing fumed. He had truly met an odd one today.

Faced with the obstinate Dou Jiao, he was out of ideas. She was not impressed by the promise of a house, a car, or money. What else could he use as bait? His good looks?

Well, that’s not a terrible idea.

But no, that wouldn’t suit him. Even if he was somewhat handsome, he had no interest in dealing with love affairs. Tang Qing looked at Sun Chao next to him.

...alright

I shouldn’t have had that thought.

It was clear that these two did not take a shining to each other.

"Do whatever you want, I am quite content without ambition," Dou Jiao said with a mischievous smile. For some reason, she found teasing Tang Qing amusing while she ignored the silent Sun Chao.

PS: I’ve read countless novels over the years, and I always disliked the mindless face-slapping scenes. So here’s a new interesting plot instead.
