Chapter 122: Chapter 112: The Eccentric Queen Mother_2
Wang Yan quickly stepped forward to take her father’s bag and coat, complaining, "Dad, you’re finally home. Come and eat."
"All right then," Wang Sheng laughed.
Seeing his daughter’s affection, Wang Sheng’s heart was filled with warmth. His daughter was so sweet, unlike his wife who only liked watching Kung Fu movies. It wasn’t that Shi Lan wasn’t virtuous, but compared to her, their daughter was always more proactive.
Just as he began eating, Wang Yan said, "Dad, I’ve invited a classmate for dinner tomorrow night and you must be there."
"Why do I have to be there? Is there something wrong?" Wang Sheng looked up with a puzzled expression.
He had previously heard from his wife that their daughter was inviting a male classmate over for dinner, which kept him awake late into the night. His first reaction was that his daughter must be in love, the second was to wonder who this punk was daring enough to mess with his daughter, and the third was to think about assessing the boy’s character.
"No, it’s just that this classmate of mine has started a company, but he might lack experience. I thought maybe you could give him some advice. There are some things I’m not sure I should ask," Wang Yan admitted, poking at the rice in her bowl.
She wasn’t an ignorant girl. Growing up in a businessman’s family, she knew more than the average high school student. She had admired Tang Qing when he suddenly came into some money and started a company, but afterward, she grew more and more concerned. Firstly, about the source of the funds. Secondly, about the management of the business. Thirdly, about the future development of the company. She wasn’t sure how Tang Qing, a high school student, could handle it all.
In her opinion, Tang Qing’s hands-off management style was problematic. Would someone cheat or manipulate him because of his youth? Although she had these concerns, she didn’t want to ask Tang Qing directly. She thought it would be better to voice her concerns through her father and offer Tang Qing some management advice. She believed she knew Tang Qing’s family situation well, and there didn’t seem to be anyone capable of ’guiding’ Tang Qing.
"Your classmate started a company? What kind of company? How many employees?" Wang Sheng asked, astonished. It wasn’t unusual for a high school senior to start a company, but it was unexpected for it to happen to someone his daughter knew.
Shi Lan also stopped eating and looked at Wang Yan, waiting for her answer.
"He has a clothing company, as well as a factory, and a couple of hundred employees, I think. He has a general manager to take care of everything. I’m worried he’s not getting a fair deal but I can’t really interfere." Wang Yan answered slowly.
Getting an idea of the size of the company, Wang Sheng started gaining some perspective. This investment was at least in the tens of millions. Who would let a high school student handle such a vast sum of money? Curiosity piqued, he laughed, "Ha ha, I must meet this young talent and see what kind of background he has."
"His family owns a small clothing business, and I’m not sure where the money to start his company came from, but it wasn’t from his parents," Wang Yan explained truthfully.
"Does he have any relatives who are officials? Otherwise, it’s hard to believe where this money came from," Wang Sheng asked with a frown.
"He does have one, an uncle who’s the head of the West City police station," Wang Yan replied.
"Qin Yugang?" Wang Sheng responded, surprised by the mention.
"Dad, do you know him?" Wang Yan asked.
"Of course, I do. The first property I developed was over in West City, and I’ve met with Qin Yugang before. I heard that he solved a major case recently and his future looks illimitable. This money..." Wang Sheng’s voice trailed off as he looked intently at Wang Yan.
Wang Yan quickly replied, "Dad, don’t overthink. His uncle isn’t that kind of person. Even though I don’t know the exact source of the money, it’s probably legitimate. I’ve shared a desk with him for so long, I trust he wouldn’t do anything wrong. But I’m worried that he’s letting unfamiliar people manage everything for him. What if they take advantage of him?"
"Haha, are you... Are you interested in this boy?" Wang Sheng teased with a playful raise of his eyebrows. He had given up on trying to discern the source of Tang Qing’s wealth. Even if it was ill-gotten, it wouldn’t be any of his concern since Tang Qing wasn’t his son-in-law. What he wanted to find out was how deep his daughter’s feelings towards Tang Qing were.
"Dad, please don’t overthink it. He’s just a classmate, and I just thought you could give him some guidance. What I say doesn’t necessarily mean it will come true." Wang Yan replied in a coquettish tone.
Well, who knows their child better than their parents? Wang Sheng was sure his daughter had feelings for Tang Qing. The extent of her feelings needed further observation though.
"Providing guidance isn’t an issue, but how is the lad fairing academically? If he’s an idiot, no amount of his money will make me approve of him as your classmate." Wang Sheng said with a smile.
"Why are you discriminating against students who aren’t good at academics?" Wang Yan complained. She didn’t like this viewpoint. Just because someone doesn’t excel academically doesn’t mean they won’t be successful in the future.
"It’s not about discrimination. It’s just my method of judgement. If a young lad cannot focus on his academics and instead chooses business, no matter how successful, I don’t look kindly upon people who can’t determine their priorities." explained Wang Sheng. This had been his belief all along, unshaken. He just felt that he grasped this concept a little too late in life, otherwise he wouldn’t still be a petty businessman.
Whenever he saw others travel by train and airplane while he laboriously trudged forward, he felt inequitable.
Having lived for so many years, he keenly understood the true meaning of ’Evil cannot overcome righteousness.’
"He ranks first in our grade." Wang Yan casually mentioned.
"First in the grade? How many points did he score in his Monthly Exam?" a surprised Wang Sheng asked. He had only been concerned with his daughter’s position and never inquired about those who ranked higher. After all, it didn’t concern him who those students were. Even Shi Lan was posing waiting for Wang Yan’s answer.
"Seven hundred and thirty-three." Wang Yan replied, a smile on her face. Recollecting this score always brought her joy. There was a hint of pride in her tone, although her distracted parents didn’t notice it.
"Seven hundred and thirty-three?"
"Wow..."
Wang Yan’s parents couldn’t help but gasp.
Indeed, such an extraordinary score would be considered prodigious anywhere.
They knew their daughter scored only six hundred and seventy-three. Doesn’t that mean Tang Qing’s score was a whole sixty points higher?
Such a crushing gap, they initially thought the differences between their daughter and the top ranks were negligible. All this while, that had been the case. But now, suddenly facing a gap of over sixty points was like facing a completely different set of questions.
"Really? Did Tang Qing truly score seven hundred and thirty-three?" Wang Sheng asked in shock, wanting to confirm.
"Of course. He even tutored me. Please don’t withhold any information from me, Dad," Wang Yan, quickly shifting the attention from herself, started to cajole her father.
"No problem, I promise I won’t hold back." Wang Sheng declared with a tap on his chest.
His impression of Tang Qing had drastically improved. And if Tang Qing and his daughter were reciprocally interested in each other, that wouldn’t be too bad. As for what kind of person Tang Qing was, he didn’t care much. He trusted his daughter’s judgement — if a person passed his daughter’s selection process, they wouldn’t be too bad.
