On another end.
In the lake.
Liu Qian and Chai Ren, amongst others, swam underwater for a while before resurfacing about thirty meters from the shore. The other men were treading water anxiously, glancing towards the direction of the shore. The hairstyles of several big shots were completely ruined, but no one cared about that now.
The wolf pack had disappeared.
On the shore, they could see several wolf corpses, but nothing else.
"Brother Yuan, he..." Chai Ren started but stopped midway, his expression pained. Having interacted with the Fighter only for a short time, he had grown to appreciate his character and abilities. He didn’t have the mentality of "bodyguards should sacrifice their lives for me in a critical moment." He wasn’t that sort of person.
"Don’t worry, he should be alright. Brother Yuan doesn’t seem the type who does things without thinking. However, I’m not sure if Brother Yuan has led the wolves away, or if he jumped into the water already," Mu Jian said, still shaken by their close brush with death. Although they were worldly men, it didn’t mean they were not afraid of dying.
"There’re no wolves in the water, and there’s none on the shore either. Brother Yuan must have led them away," Liu Qian said after examining the nearby surface of the water and shaking his head.
No one knew what to say for a moment. The Fighter leading the wolves away alone was likely a situation of greater danger than good. Despite the confidence they had in the Fighter, they still couldn’t fully put their minds at ease.
"Mr. Liu, I realize I made the absolutely correct decision to bring you along this time. Otherwise, I wouldn’t live to see the sun tomorrow," Chai Ren joked bitterly. Without the Fighter, they would be goners today. Even jumping into the water would have been futile.
"I didn’t expect to encounter all these incidents either. It was Monkey who wanted to learn from Brother Yuan, this is why I borrowed him from my friend in the first place. Looking back, it seems like we should really be thanking Monkey," Liu Qian said smiling wryly. Initially, he thought that he would definitely make a loss out of this four-million RMB transaction. But since yesterday afternoon, he had realized he was actually making a profit and now, he felt like he made a killing.
"So, what do we do now?" Chai Ren turned his head and asked Mu Jian.
Frowning, Mu Jian replied, "We can only wait. If there’s still no movement on shore after ten more minutes, we will go ashore. There’s a satellite phone in the backpack on the shore. I can call for someone to come and get us." They had phones on them but these were not waterproof and thus, all of them were damaged beyond function.
"That’s good then. Although Jianzi, do you think there’s cannibal fish in this lake?" Chai Ren changed the subject.
"Screw off, you doom-monger," Mu Jian retorted irritably. This was like telling ghost stories late at night. Even though they knew it was all bullshit, they couldn’t prevent their minds from imagining and worrying about it.
Chai Ren laugh awkwardly: "Hehe, I’m just trying to lighten the mood after that life-threatening crisis."
"Damn it, is this your idea of lightening the mood? This is more like adding fuel to the fire! Holy shit, I’m actually worried about cannibal fish now," Mu Jian scoffed.
"Well, hearing you say that, I’m beginning to get scared too," a touch of color enters Chai Ren’s face.
Thinking back to the cannibal fish movie he had seen before, Chai Ren began to feel uncomfortably edgy.
"Serves you right."
"..."
The group of tycoons chatted intermittently.
However, after not more than five minutes.
"Look quickly..."
Monkey, who’d kept his gaze fixed upon the shore, yelled out loudly.
Everyone was startled and quickly turned their heads towards the shore. They saw an individual walking out from the forest. It could only be the Fighter.
Seeing it wasn’t the wolf pack, everyone rejoiced. Firstly, they were glad that the Fighter was alive. Secondly, they were relieved that the wolf pack had been driven away. After all, their ammunition was limited. If they were to encounter a wolf pack of the scale that had been present when they jumped into the lake, they would be in serious trouble.
The group immediately swam towards the shore.
In over a minute, everyone was back on dry land, their bodies dripping wet. They couldn’t get their clothes, but it wasn’t cold, so they remained as they were.
Looking at the wolf corpses scattered around, they were utterly aghast. They had no time to pay attention to the dead wolves when they were being pursued by the wolf pack earlier. Now, with more than a hundred wolves lying all over this clearing, there was enough to give anyone with a faint heart a mental disorder.
The Fighter, too, was in a battle-weary state. His hands and body were covered in wolf blood and fur. He was grimy, but everyone thought it was the coolest look.
Liu Qian, who was in the front, scrutinised the Fighter from head to toe, then asked in concern, "Brother Yuan, are you okay?"
If anything happened to the Fighter, he would have a hard time explaining to Tang Kai and the powers behind him. Especially Tang Qing, who had guaranteed that there would be no danger. And now, within just two days, they had encountered life-threatening dangers twice. Liu Qian was feeling guilty, but also slightly relieved.
"I’m okay," the Fighter replied, shaking his head. However, it wasn’t exactly true. His hands were a bit scraped from using the gun as a brass knuckle earlier. Apart from that, if there was anything wrong, it was that he was hungry as he had expended a large amount of energy.
"Glad to hear that," Liu Qian sighed in relief.
"Brother Yuan, what happened to the rest of the wolves?" Chai Ren asked cautiously, casting a wary glance at their surroundings.
"They are dead," the Fighter replied in a flat tone.
What?
They’re dead?
The others gulped nervously.
Although they were prepared, they were still shocked. Was this something a human could do?
"Brother Yuan, you killed all the remaining wolves?" Mu Jian exclaimed.
"Hmm," the fighter nodded.
"So... Brother Yuan, what shall we do now?" Mu Jian inhaled deeply, needless to say he was astonished. And before he knew it, he had placed the fighter on an equal footing with himself, especially under these circumstances, he had to treat him with even higher regard.
"Shouldn’t we be eating?"
The fighter retorted with a question.
"..."
Everyone was astonished once again at the fighter’s response. Having just gone through such an ordeal, and being surrounded by wolf carcasses, could he really still want to eat?
That must take incredible mental resilience.
"Uh...Brother Yuan, won’t this attract more wild animals?" Chai Ren asked quietly, eyeing the wolf carcasses around them.
The fighter casually replied, "If they come, they will be killed."
Killed?
This was the second time they heard the fighter utter such ’harsh words’.
The first time they heard it, they found it disdainful,
but upon hearing it the second time, it was pure confidence.
The group shared a bitter smile.
They thought about it, and indeed, with over two hundred wolves killed, what dangers could possibly remain in the forest? Could anything be more dangerous than that?
If there was, it would be the fighter himself.
He was the true human beast.
Once the decision was made, Mu Jian was at ease, and ordered, "Captain Qi, ask them to continue lighting the fire and cooking. Damn it, we’ll roast a few wolves for lunch. That scare nearly killed me."
"Yes."
After that, the other bodyguards hurriedly continued their work, digging pits and starting fires. If it were an ordinary person, seeing so many wolf corpses around, they would lose their appetite. But these were not ordinary people, their actions were naturally extraordinary. They hoped that eating some meat would relieve them, and ease the frustration from the previous ordeal. 𝓃𝓸𝓋𝓅𝓊𝒷.𝓬𝓸𝓂
The tyrants sat and chatted, not bothering to fish. The fighter, as always, ’stood there like a dummy.’
An hour later, the wolf meat and fish were roasted. As for the deer, it was already almost consumed by the wolves, and couldn’t be eaten anymore.
"Brother Yuan, come, eat more."
"Brother Yuan, sit down, you don’t have to be so serious."
"Brother Yuan, I admire you."
"Brother Yuan, here, have a tissue."
"..."
The others were enthusiastic, but the fighter, as always, did not bother being courteous or responsive. Nevertheless, he had completely won everyone’s respect. His silence, his posture, no matter how you looked at it, was pleasing to the eye. The fighter’s presence gave everyone a sense of security, not only because of his combat power, but also his ability to observe, which was even keener than a dog’s, although this sounded strange.
"Brother Yuan, thank you for saving my life. To express my gratitude, I will give you one million US dollars once we return, I hope you don’t think it’s too little," Mu Jian said during the meal.
"Hmm," the fighter nodded.
Seeing the fighter accept, Chai Ren also spoke up.
"Brother Yuan, without a doubt, I owe you my life. If you need anything in the future, just say it. When we get back, I, along with Liu, will give you twenty million RMB, including the security fee."
"Hmm," the fighter replied with just one word. All calculated, this operation had earned him a total of twenty-eight million RMB, equivalent to the price of fourteen fighters. Although the profit margin was high, the cost was not small either, so it could not be considered as excessive profit, just a normal fee.
Hearing this, Qi Tian and others couldn’t help but feel envious. However, looking at the wolf carcasses scattered all around and extending into the forest, they thought it was reasonable. They had only killed fifty or sixty wolves themselves, the rest were almost all killed by the fighter, meaning his efficiency was three times higher than all of them combined. If it was divided per person, the fighter’s wolf-killing efficiency was thirty times their own.
The group was on the verge of ’kowtowing’ to this numerical contrast.
At this time, some wild animals and carnivorous birds began to gather, but everyone was not afraid. With the fighter there, they had the courage. Compared to the previous wolf pack, a few bears would be deemed insignificant. Of course, if there were too many, that would be trouble due to lack of bullets.
After the meal, the group headed back the way they came.
Neither Mu Jian nor Chai Ren wanted to hunt in this forest again. If they had another encounter like this, they would surely die, even though the odds were small, they had already developed a psychological shadow.
PS: The end.
