...
Break of dawn.
Inside Martin Bahati’s house.
He was in deep sleep, utterly unaware of the figure standing beside his bed, watching him.
The time hit midnight.
"Bang Bang Bang..."
Three knocks echoed loudly in his room, jolting Martin Bahati awake like a thunderclap.
His sleep was always light, easily disturbed by the slightest noise. Perhaps it was a habit ingrained from years of living in the jungle, a highly chaotic place rife with bandits and fierce predators. One careless moment and you could die without even knowing how.
Martin Bahati snapped his eyes open.
The room was still dark, with only the dim moonlight filtering through, and the sounds of the night insects drifted in from outside. It was just as it always was.
It seems it was his noise that made him wake up.
Wait a minute.
Martin Bahati suddenly sat up, turning to look at the figure standing by his bed. He broke out in cold sweat, heart nearly skipping a beat in fright.
"Who are you?" Martin Bahati blurted out loudly.
In the meantime, he hurriedly reached for the gun kept under his pillow.
But in the very next second before he could lift his gun, his vision blurred and the firearm was snatched away, forcing a painful yelp as his fingers were cruelly wrenched.
"Ah!" Martin Bahati screamed in pain. Puzzled why nobody came to check on him, he finally remembered his habit of talking in sleep. His loud shouts and screams in the middle of the night were a common occurrence, everyone had grown accustomed to them. His nocturnal disturbances were so bizarre that even the doctors from the international aid had termed it incredibly rare.
"Good evening, Mr. Martin Bahati." To prevent him from shouting, the Fighter casually pointed Martin’s own gun to his head as a greeting.
Hearing this, Martin Bahati unconsciously let out a sigh of relief. Definitely a better situation than someone just shooting him without a word. However, the cold sensation on his forehead sent chills down his spine. Despite multiple thoughts racing through his mind, he couldn’t figure out who he might have offended. He had always been amiable and rarely made enemies.
"Who are you and what do you want?" Martin Bahati composed himself and asked.
"Smart. I won’t waste time, so it’s simple. I help you become the leader under the condition you agree to some of our terms." the Fighter cut straight to the point.
"Why should I believe you and what are the conditions?" Martin Bahati asked with a frown.
"You have no other choice." the Fighter replied cryptically.
Faced with the threat from this man, a multitude of thoughts raced through Martin Bahati’s mind. He pondered about who might have sent this man, their purpose, straining his brain. The temptation to be the leader was undoubtedly alluring. The controller of the county town, Karonba, also possessed the largest dividend rights. The shares of several deputy leaders combined were just a bit more than Karonba’s.
Besides, as the man in front said, he has no other choice. Knowing this piece of news, denial could possibly lead to his death.
"How are you going to do that?" Martin Bahati questioned with a stern face.
"We don’t have much time. Your leader and his loyal followers won’t see tomorrow’s sun. Can you handle the rest?" the Fighter asked.
"Humph, do you think it’s so simple? Killing the leader and his followers will just make me the leader? You’re too naive. He represents a tribe, every deputy does. The tribes can’t be handled by me. If this is your plan, I must say, I can’t do anything." Martin Bahati scoffed at what he thought was a ludicrous plan.
"We did consider that. But what if you align with the other deputies?" the Fighter continued smoothly.
"You approached them too?" Martin Bahati asked in surprise.
"Of course. You couldn’t handle them alone which is why we sought the other deputies. However, the content of our conversation was different. We have determined you to be the only suitable candidate for the leadership." the Fighter replied.
Upon hearing this, Martin Bahati didn’t know whether to be happy or what. He had to admit that it felt pretty good to be regarded highly.
"Will they agree to team up with me?" Martin Bahati asked, a hint of worry in his voice. 𝓃𝓸𝓋𝓹𝓾𝓫.𝒸ℴ𝓶
The Fighter paused for a moment, a faint smile graced his lips.
"They’ve already agreed."
PS: I recommend a book by a friend, "Tokyo Police Affairs". It’s a story about a soul that travels to Japan and becomes a police officer. Those who like this sort of theme may want to check it out!
