Chapter 115: Chapter 115: Our Dad Can’t Rest in Peace Even in the Underworld.
"Your turn." Tong Yao turned her head and gave Si Chen a fierce yet playful look, as if she was determined to fight against him if he dared to express a preference for having a son in the future.
Surprised by the sudden transition of the conversation to future children, Si Chen felt somewhat uncomfortable and cleared his throat, "I have no demands whether it’s a boy or a girl." What actually matters is who the mother is.
Si Chen felt warm and contented, like a sip of good wine, at the idea of having children with Tong Yao, picturing her waiting at home with their child. If they were to have a daughter, he hoped that she resembled Tong Yao. He would protect both mother and daughter. If it was a son, he and his son could protect Tong Yao together.
"You have the right mindset. Here, have a piece of chicken as a reward." Tong Yao was quite satisfied with Si Chen’s response and jovially served him a piece of chicken. She could not control Si Xiaohui’s thoughts, but as long as Si Chen was on the same page with her, everything was good.
Even Tong Yao herself didn’t realize that she had subconsciously started considering Si Chen the father of her future children.
They were married now and got along well. If they were to have children in the future, Si Chen was the most likely candidate to be the father. As for physical appearance, Tong Yao was satisfied with that of Si Chen. Regardless of whether their child took after the father or mother, he or she would certainly be good-looking.
Looking at the piece of chicken in his bowl, the corners of Si Chen’s lips curled slightly. Even though it was from the same pot, this specific piece tasted as if it was marinated, making it much more delicious than the others.
"Brother, your views are wrong." Unexpectedly, the chicken in her mouth was no longer appetizing. Si Xiaohui tried to convince Si Chen, "You’re the most successful person in our family. Our family’s future relies on you to carry on the lineage. How could we do without a son? Even if I were to agree, mom would not. Not having a son with such good genes is a waste."
Deep down, Si Xiaohui held somewhat traditional views that favored sons over daughters. She felt that among her two brothers, at least one of them needed to have a son to carry on the Si Family line. Daughters, once married, would take the last name of their husbands, just like Tong Yao, whose parents would have a hard time even seeing their daughter, let alone relying on her in their old age.
So, the conclusion was that they had to have a son.
Before Si Chen had a chance to speak, Tong Yao interjected first: "isn’t there Boyi for carrying on the family line? Your second brother is physically healthy, so he’s guaranteed to have no issues with carrying on the family line. If he’s willing to have more boys, I’ll cover the fines for him for having more children than allowed."
"Are they the same?" Seeing Tong Yao passing the buck to her second brother, Si Xiaohui defended herself: "The second brother is not as educated as the eldest brother. Your genes, both of you, are too good. Both of you are educated people. It’d be great if you could have more kids. But I know the family planning policy is strict now."
In a displeased tone, Tong Yao said, "Since you know that we are educated, don’t go back to your old-fashioned thinking."
She would give birth to whatever child she wanted, it wasn’t anyone else’s business and she would not stand for busybodies. It didn’t matter if it was her sister-in-law, even Lin Fengying’s words wouldn’t change her mind.
If Si Chen dared to side with Si Xiaohui, it would be a sign that they had different values. She would pack up and move out immediately. She would not continue living with Si Chen.
She was determined not to have a love-struck brain.
Seeing that it was impossible to convince Tong Yao, Si Xiaohui became slightly impatient. "What ancient thinking! Daughters get married and leave their own families, like tossed water. Only sons are able to guard the residential property. Having sons ensures that others won’t dare to bully you."
Having grown up in a village, Si Xiaohui had witnessed many fights over land. Families with more sons could dominate the village, making her doubt the need of having daughters.
Could daughters participate in those fights?
Listening to Si Xiaohui, who was becoming increasingly unreasonable, Si Chen frowned and said, "Xiaohui, there are certain things you should not interfere with."
Si Chen didn’t appreciate anyone interfering in his and Tong Yao’s lives, even if that person was his sister.
In other words, he wouldn’t like it even if Lin Fengying tried to control these things.
Tong Yao’s mood had lifted significantly. Turning to Si Xiaohui, she teased, "Did you hear that? Dismiss those outdated thoughts!"
Seeing the couple were backing each other up and refusing to listen to her, Si Xiaohui angrily said, "I’ll call mom to talk to you both."
They had to listen to their mother’s words, right?
Tong Yao ignored Si Xiaohui’s words and happily went on eating. Si Chen directly changed the subject, "The day after tomorrow, the professor from Nanda Hospital in Kyoto will come to exchange academic knowledge. I will probably be quite busy. If you two don’t want to cook, you can buy food from the canteen."
Tong Yao nodded, "You go about your business, don’t worry about us." She had received the news a few days ago, so this was not a surprise to her.
After dinner, as usual, Si Chen drove Si Xiaohui home. On the way, Si Xiaohui could not help but bring up the topic of having children again.
"Brother, did you say that just because sister-in-law was present?" Si Xiaohui attempted to figure out Si Chen’s true feelings. "No outsiders are here now. Tell me what you really think! I promise I won’t tell my sister-in-law. This will be our little secret."
How could having a son and a daughter be the same?
With such good genes, the elder brother should definitely have a son. As for the second brother, he could have anything, as long as the Si Family had a son to carry on the lineage.
In the future, if her brother and nephew became more and more outstanding, she would be very proud. When she returned to the village, everyone would greet her proactively, which would be awesome.
Si Chen frowned more deeply, speaking seriously, "If you have such bias for sons over daughters, keep it to yourself. Do not attempt to interfere with others’ lives. Keep out of our business in future."
If a man couldn’t even handle his own family affairs without others meddling, how could he provide his wife with a comfortable and stable life?
"Brother, aren’t all these thoughts out of love for you?" Si Xiaohui was a little hurt, and pouted, "You’re the one with the best prospects in our family. If you don’t have a son, our father won’t rest in peace."
Seeing her invoke their late father, Si Chen frowned even more. His dark eyes almost merged with the night. "You’re not young anymore, and you will have to get married someday. Think carefully about your words."
"I, I am far from ready to get married." Thinking of her future mother-in-law forcing her to have a son, Si Xiaohui suddenly lost the confidence to go on persuading her brother.
Whether to have a son or a daughter was indeed not something that they could decide. What if she could only give birth to daughters and her in-laws insisted on having grandsons? Her life would be very hard.
With this in mind, Si Xiaohui began to worry.
Upon second thought, she began to look on the bright side.
Given that her elder brother was a doctor and her sister-in-law was a businesswoman, as long as there was support from her parents, her in-laws would surely not dare to be too overbearing. Even if she couldn’t give birth to a son, her in-laws would definitely not dare to bully her.
