Chapter 122: Chapter 122: Are She and Si Chen Not Really Legally Married?
Si Chen rode his bike to the nearest telephone booth with Tong Yao, dialed the Tong family’s number, and then stood quietly to the side, silent.
As the dial tone played, Tong Yao’s palms sweated with nerves.
In her past life, she had been an orphan, with no parents to speak of; a family’s warmth was something she could only long for but never reach. Now, having parents all of a sudden felt strange, yet she was looking forward to it.
"Hello." After two or three rings, the call was answered, followed by a soft woman’s voice coming through the line.
"Who called?" A stern male voice also came on the line.
"Mom." Tong Yao tried to call out, for some reason her eyes became a bit sour at speaking the word, and she choked up: "I miss you."
It was unclear whether these were feelings left behind by the woman whose life she had taken over, or her own longing for familial affection, but upon hearing Wen Yun’s voice, there was a surge of warmth in Tong Yao’s heart, a feeling as if she had found her long-lost relatives.
"Yaoyao, it’s Yaoyao, Yaohui, it’s a call from Yaoyao." Wen Yun, hearing her daughter’s voice on the phone, called out excitedly.
It had been over a month since she’d heard from her daughter since she arrived at Li City and hadn’t called her at all.
Knowing her daughter resented her, Wen Yun felt uncomfortable.
When Tong Yaohui proposed his idea of marrying their daughter to Si Chen, she initially opposed. It wasn’t Si Chen she disapproved of, it was the Si Family. If Si Chen was willing to marry into their family and live with them, she would wholeheartedly agree.
After long discussions with her husband late into the night, she was finally convinced by Tong Yaohui. But when she saw the conditions at Si Family’s house in Li City, Wen Yun nearly took her daughter away on the spot. She resisted this urge by reminding herself of Tong Yaohui’s words.
The whole train ride home, she cried all the way. She’d been worried about her daughter all this time. If it weren’t for Si Chen’s call telling her that Tong Yao was living in the city, and if her husband hadn’t stopped her, she would have gone to see her daughter by now.
Even though she knew her daughter was doing well now, she still felt uneasy without hearing from her. She had not had a good night’s sleep for the past month. Now, she was both excited and happy. It was no exaggeration to say that she was moved to tears with joy.
"It’s just a phone call, why are you so excited?" Tong Yaohui pretended to be casual, but he had already moved next to Wen Yun, his ear close to her head.
"Yaoyao, are you getting used to your life there? Is Xiaochen treating you well? Do you have enough money?" Wen Yun composed herself and started asking a ton of concerned questions. "It’s been really hot recently, have you bought an electric fan?"
Before Tong Yao could answer, Tong Yaohui interjected: "That’s her home now, she will get used to it with time. Xiaochen won’t mistreat her, why worry about these pointless things?"
"Am I talking to my daughter, or are you talking to my daughter?" Wen Yun glared at Tong Yaohui. "Stop interrupting when I’m talking to my daughter."
If it weren’t for Tong Yaohui, her only daughter wouldn’t be married off so far away. Although Si Chen was a good guy, she felt sorry for her daughter!
Yaoyao was born with a golden spoon and had never suffered. How could she get used to living in such conditions at the Si family?
And that little sister-in-law of the Si family, she was definitely not a good sign. What if she bullied Yaoyao? Yaoyao was a stranger in a foreign place, without anyone to turn to.
"Okay, okay, you talk, you mother and daughter talk, I won’t interrupt." Tong Yaohui pretended to step aside, but before long, he unconsciously moved back to Wen Yun’s side, remaining silent this time.
Listening to the conversation between her parents, Tong Yao laughed. "Mom, I’m doing quite well here, don’t worry about me. Ahchen is nice to me, and I also bought a fan, a very big one. It’s really cool to use."
"As long as you have a fan. If you want to eat something, just buy it. Don’t be stingy with your money. If you run out, call us, we will send you money." Hearing Tong Yao’s sensible words, Wen Yun’s heart ached. How much hardship has her daughter endured to become so sensible now? The fact that she can be happy about buying a fan shows just how much she has changed.
"Yaoyao, do you have enough clothes there? Do you want me to help send you some over?"
"No need, Mom, I will buy new clothes when I need them."
"Don’t be like you were at home, spending money recklessly. A single piece of clothing costing hundreds of yuan. Now that you’re married, you need to learn how to live frugally," Tong Yaohui’s voice once again came through the phone.
"Go away." Wen Yun was unhappy with Tong Yaohui constantly interrupting. She pushed him away, then said to Tong Yao. "Yaoyao, don’t listen to your father. If you miss home, call us more often. If you want anything from here, just tell me, I’ll post it to you."
"Okay, Mom." This feeling of being worried about was warm. Though she understood that the concern was for the original, Tong Yao couldn’t help but feel moved. So this is what it was like to be remembered by one’s parents; it was really warm.
The two chatted for a while. Wen Yun knew it was about time to hang up, but she reluctantly asked, "Yaoyao, do you want to talk to your father for a bit?"
Her husband loved their daughter as much as she did. Although he hadn’t shown it, Wen Yun knew his heart was just as concerned. During these sleepless nights, Tong Yaohui didn’t sleep either. He was just stubborn, didn’t admit it but was constantly worried.
However, Wen Yun wasn’t sure if her daughter had forgiven her husband and was willing to talk to him.
When Tong Yaohui heard Wen Yun’s words, he became nervous, all ears for Tong Yao’s response. When he heard her say yes, he immediately masked his joy and adopted a stern fatherly demeanor.
He took the phone, looking grave, and said: "Now that you are married, you are an adult. You can’t be as willful as you were at home. You need to learn to take care of and be mindful of Xiaochen. Discuss things with each other and don’t throw tantrums and want to come home."
"I let you talk to our daughter, not to lecture her." Wen Yun glared at Tong Yaohui from the side, warning him that if he continued to talk like this, she would snatch the phone back.
Tong Yaohui then cleared his throat and changed the topic. "I will mail your hukou to you. You and Xiaochen should get your marriage certificate as soon as possible."
Originally, Tong Yaohui planned for Tong Yao and Si Chen to get their marriage certificate before their wedding, but he’d forgotten their hukou at home in the rush to catch the train.
During this time, they also happened to buy a house, which required the hukou for paperwork. One thing after another delayed them until now.
They had been married for more than a month. They should hurry up and get their marriage certificate. If they keep dragging it out, the grandchild will be born.
Bang!!!!
Tong Yao wondered if she was hearing things.
Marriage certificate?
Had she and Si Chen never got one?
Upon further thought, Tong Yao realized that she had no memory of getting a marriage certificate with Si Chen. In this era, the certificate could be obtained without the person present; plus they had a wedding ceremony in the village, so she never thought about the marriage certificate. Turns out, they had never gotten one.
Did this mean that she and Si Chen weren’t legally married at all?
