Chapter 227: Chapter 227: Rare and Precious

"Five hundred thousand?" Tong Yao was stunned by this amount. Millionaires were admired by everyone and counted amongst the wealthy class in these times. Wen Yun gave her ten thousand yuan, which had left her astonished for quite a while and she didn’t expect her family’s residence to be worth five hundred thousand yuan.

Tong Yao blinked, "Does that make me a true second-generation wealthy then?"

And from Wen Yun’s remarks, it was clear that the family savings were much more than ten thousand. In this era, calling her a rich girl was not an exaggeration. No wonder she was able to buy clothes worth a hundred or two without blinking an eye - her family wealth was indeed substantial!

Si Chen chuckled, "You’re just realizing now that you’re a ’rich kid’?"

Tong Yao bluffed, "I didn’t have a benchmark before. I thought everyone’s living conditions were about the same as mine, or at least not too different. After all, the majority of people I know have similar circumstances. Who would’ve known that my family’s conditions are so much better than most!"

This was not untrue. The original owner indeed did not realize the affluence of her family. After all, in Kyoto, families like theirs were not rare. It wasn’t until she arrived in Li City and saw people living in adobe houses that the difference became extremely clear. Therefore, when first arriving at the Si Family, the original owner had almost collapsed.

Thank goodness she had come to this world; otherwise, the original owner who was always accustomed to living luxuriously, would not have coped with the hardships that came with being married to Si Chen.

Si Chen didn’t question Tong Yao’s words and spoke softly about the current state of most people’s lives. "The country’s new policies in recent years and the rapid economic development have improved people’s lives significantly compared to the past. Few years ago, even having enough food and clothing was considered a luxury in the countryside."

Sich Chen seemed to be lost in some kind of memory, a complexity reflected in his eyes.

Tong Yao tilted her head and looked at him, "So, your childhood must have been quite hard, right?"

"It was okay," Si Chen summed up his past life in two words. However, Tong Yao knew that Si Chen’s childhood was definitely not as relaxed as he claimed.

The life of a widow with three children in the countryside was not hard to imagine.

As the saying goes, there’s never a lack of unwanted attention in front of a widow’s door. From the well-featured appearance of Lin Fengying, you can tell that she was a beautiful woman in her youth. Of course, she would catch the attention of the older single men in the village.

Unfortunately, despite Lin Fengying’s timid nature, she remained loyal to her deceased husband and refused to remarry. She persevered to raise her three children alone. Although the Tong Family had helped a lot, Lin Fengying’s hard work could not be denied.

Thinking about Lin Fengying’s hardships, Tong Yao felt that they should really renovate their old house and let Lin Fengying live a better life.

The two of them got off the bus, and by then it was already after nine o’clock, with few people on the streets. Si Chen was holding their purchases in one hand and holding Tong Yao’s hand in the other. They chatted as they walked, and before they reached the entrance of their residential area, they heard a quarrel. On closer look, they found that it was Deng Wenwen arguing with a group – two boys and one girl, all dressed fashionably.

Deng Wenwen stood out especially; she curled her hair and wore a tight dress that displayed her figure, which made her look a bit frivolous and mature for her age. The other girl seemed more normal, with her hair cut short like a boy’s. She had a loud voice and acted like a leader of the group.

As for the two boys, they were dressed in jeans and striped sweatshirts, puffing on cigarettes, and trying hard to act cool. All four of them appeared to be drunk and reeked of liquor.

The reason for their argument was that the boys wanted to go into the residency but Deng Wenwen, despite usually being reckless, was well aware that not just anyone could enter their housing complex. She disagreed, leading to a disagreement among them.

The quartet were having a heated argument, but as soon as they saw someone approaching, they lowered their voices. As the two approached, Deng Wenwen recognized Si Chen and her expression changed, especially when she saw Si Chen affectionately holding Tong Yao’s hand. She instantly felt a pang of jealousy.

Emboldened by the liquor, she rushed to Si Chen to plead her case, "Dr. Si, it’s good that you’re back. These people are so annoying, insisting on coming to my house. I can’t stop them. Can you help me?"

On hearing this, one of the boys retorted, "Deng Wenwen, what’s your game? You were the one who kept insisting that we come to your place. Now that we’re here, you won’t let us in. What the hell do you mean by this?"

Deng Wenwen snapped, "It doesn’t mean anything. I am just not letting you in. Now leave before Dr. Si loses his temper."

Upon hearing this, the boy was infuriated, but he didn’t confront Deng Wenwen because Si Chen was there. He snorted and said, "Your stupid residency. Even if you beg me, I won’t come."

After saying that, he turned around and left, and the other two followed suit.

Deng Wenwen didn’t seem to care. She directly ignored Tong Yao and said to Si Chen, "Dr. Si, thank you for saving me again." Then she shot a provocative glance at Tong Yao.

Tong Yao was amused by Deng Wenwen’s childish behavior. She had never met anyone who would put others in such a difficult position. It was such a naive act, like that of an immature girl. Arguing with Deng Wenwen was like lowering her own standards.

So, Tong Yao ignored Deng Wenwen’s performance and pulled Si Chen towards their home, "Let’s go!"

Seeing this, Deng Wenwen was furious. She quickly ran ahead and blocked their way, "Hey, Dr. Si and I are talking. You can’t just pull him away like that. Do you have any manners?"

"Then, why don’t you ask Dr. Si if he wants to talk to you?" Tong Yao passed the buck to Si Chen, even glaring at him. He had attracted this woman, so he could deal with her.

Upon hearing this, Deng Wenwen turned to Si Chen, her eyes welled up with tears and called out, "Dr. Si..." To the unknowing, they would think she was being wronged by Tong Yao.

Seeing her like this, Si Chen frowned, "I have never saved you. Do not create baseless rumors in this community. It’s not good for everyone."

With that, he led Tong Yao into their residential area, not even sparing Deng Wenwen another glance. For Si Chen, disregarding such women was the norm. During his university years, he had encountered many similar instances and had always dealt with them indifferently.

In this era, people were usually reserved in expressing their feelings. Once they sensed the other party was not interested, they would choose to back off. Girls like Deng Wenwen were rare occurrences.

"Dr. Si..."

Watching Si Chen’s disappearing figure, Deng Wenwen stomped her foot in frustration but could do nothing.

She had only met Si Chen a few times and didn’t particularly like him. She simply found his appearance appealing and his indifferent attitude evoked a desire to win him over.

She was aware that Si Chen was married, but she didn’t want to marry him!

Then why was he treating her like this?
