Chapter 271: Chapter 271: Why are you guys here?
Just like most mothers-in-law, Lin Fengying’s first thought was to blame her daughter-in-law, Tong Yao. She kept hinting at Tong Yao to get a medical check-up whenever they spoke on the phone.
Although Tong Yao wasn’t in a hurry to have a child before, she soon started feeling anxious. She wondered if her second chance at life had come at the cost of her ability to become a mother.
Concerns about the couple not having a child after a year of marriage were not only held by Lin Fengying, but also by Tong Yaohui. Tong Yao’s father expressed his worries to Wen Yun, his wife, and they both decided to take Tong Yao to the hospital for check-ups.
Fearing the spread of negative news in the hospital, Wen Yun contacted an infertility specialist in another hospital after doing some research. Then, she discussed the matter with Tong Yao.
Worried about Tong Yao’s possible resistance, Wen Yun patiently explained, "Yaoyao, you and Xiaochen are both young. If there is a problem, the earlier it’s discovered, the better. Medical treatments are advanced now, so even if it’s a physical issue, your chances for recovery are high. Let’s have you checked first. If it’s not you, we’ll then get Xiaochen checked. Whoever has the issue should be cooperative. Our family can afford medical treatment, so don’t worry about that."
Every parent hopes to have grandchildren after their child gets married. They did not intend to pressure Tong Yao and Xiaochen, but it is also crucial for the young couple to acknowledge and address any potential health problems. Hence, they proposed a medical check-up.
With Tong Yao currently anxious about the situation, she agreed instantly after hearing that Wen Yun had contacted a specialist, "Mom, don’t worry. I’m not stubborn. Since you’ve arranged a specialist, let’s go tomorrow. But let’s not tell Ahchen yet. If it’s my issue, I’ll cooperate with the treatment. If it’s his issue, we’ll talk about it after he finishes his graduate school examination."
The competition for graduate school is intense in this era, with only a few thousand spaces available nationwide. It requires genuine talent, not just luck, to succeed. Hence, she respected his ambition and wanted to support him, just like he supported her in opening her own shop.
Regrettably, she didn’t pay much attention to Si Chen’s circumstances in her previous life and remained clueless about whether he had a child or how many children he had.
If she had known, she wouldn’t be so anxious now.
Wen Yun gently reassured her, "Don’t overthink it, it may not even be your problem. Some couples are perfectly healthy, yet they only have children a few years after marriage. But the examination will at least ease your mind."
Tong Yao grumbled, "I’m not the only one who’s anxious. My mother-in-law has been calling me recently, hinting about wanting a grandchild. I guess our prolonged childlessness has sparked rumors in the village."
In rural areas, most couples start preparing for children as soon as they get married. Couples who don’t have children within a year of marriage are a minority. Those who don’t, often have physical conditions that temporarily impede pregnancy.
Some people in this situation would choose to adopt a child. Surprisingly, many of these couples get pregnant shortly after adoption.
Should she continue to face fertility issues, Lin Fengying might entertain this idea as well.
Wen Yun frowned slightly, "Lives are lived for oneself, not for others to evaluate. Next time your mother-in-law calls, give her our number. Let her call me, and I’ll talk to her."
She wasn’t unreasonable, but she didn’t like Lin Fengying placing all the pressure on her daughter either. Parents ought to be understanding and not keep putting pressure on their children.
After all, at present, the couple wasn’t refusing to have children; they just hadn’t been able to conceive yet.
"Mom, you’re truly the best," Tong Yao chortled, hugging Wen Yun’s arm affectionately. It feels great knowing someone’s got your back. n𝚘𝚟𝚙u𝚋.co𝚖
The next morning, after Si Chen left for work, Tong Yao and Wen Yun went to the hospital. Apart from two test reports that would be ready the next day, all other indicators were normal, and Tong Yao was in excellent health.
The doctor said there was a high chance Tong Yao was healthy. If the test results confirmed this the next day, then they should get Si Chen checked.
Exiting the examination room, Wen Yun breathed a sigh of relief but immediately grew worried about Si Chen. "If there’s no problem with your body, let Xiaochen come for a check-up after he finishes his examination," she suggested.
"Auntie, what are you doing here?" A surprised voice sounded from behind.
Tong Yao turned around to see Lin Man, dressed in a nurse’s uniform, quickly walking towards them. Wen Yun forced a smile.
"I wasn’t feeling well, and Yaoyao accompanied me to get a check-up. Do you work here?"
Lin Man glanced at Tong Yao before responding in a slightly surprised tone, "Yaoyao is getting prettier by the day."
Considering how casually she addressed Tong Yao and her elder-like tone, a stranger might mistake her as being older than Tong Yao.
Ever since Tong Yao found out Lin Man was the one who left the note for Si Chen, Tong Yao had been unable to like her, "The next time you see me, if you don’t call me cousin, you don’t need to greet me," she said, finding Lin Man a nuisance.
Lin Man didn’t expect to be met with hostility when she met her aunt and cousin at the hospital. She frowned, "You’re only a few months older than me. Why are you making such a fuss?"
Tong Yao sneered, "Your parents are only a generation older than me. Should I address them by their names next time I see them?"
"Why are you bringing my parents into this?" Lin Man grew agitated, "I respect them as my elders. You can’t compare these two situations."
Even though their families had quarreled over property issues in the past, her family had already sold the apartment, and the matter was settled. Ton Yao, on the other hand, wouldn’t let go of those past issues. If Tong Yao kept acting this way, were their families going to cut ties over such a petty matter?
Tong Yao retorted sarcastically, "They’re elders when I respect them but become nothing when I don’t."
"You’ve gone too far," Lin Man snarled, turning to Wen Yun, "Auntie, Yaoyao is married now, but she’s still rude. I suggest you discipline her."
Although Wen Yun did not want to project the tension between the adults onto Lin Man, she became annoyed when Lin Man disrespected her daughter.
"Yaoyao is right. You haven’t been treating her like an elder sister, despite her being older. If you look down on her, you should just ignore her in the future," she shot back.
