Chapter 308: Chapter 308: The Hospital is Not a Place to Recognize Relatives
The girl with Zhou Lei is Huang Mengxue, dressed like a typical college student, wearing a pair of glasses for shortsightedness. She has average looks but seems rather gentle and tranquil. She speaks politely and is a stark contrast to Deng Wenwen’s vivacious and bold personality.
She might not be as beautiful as Deng Wenwen, but she possesses a certain aura that Deng Wenwen lacks.
Zhou Lei mentioned that Huang Mengxue is his senior by one year at the university. Judging by their ambiguous relationship and Zhou Lei’s thoughtful care towards her, it seemed he was in the pursuit stage of the relationship. It wasn’t long before they would become an official couple.
It appears Deng Wenwen is bound to be heartbroken for some time.
Zhou Lei had previously spoken of his desire to become a civil servant. If that were the case, Huang Mengxue would indeed be more suitable for him, or rather, he believes Huang Mengxue is more fitting.
Tong Yao, although she understood, chose not to reveal the truth. Instead, she strived to maintain a lively atmosphere. Zhou Lei also noticed Deng Wenwen’s mood was off. He had a faint suspicion about why this might be the case, but did not confront it. After dinner, he left with his senior.
"Sister Yaoyao, is Zhou Lei going to get a girlfriend?" Deng Wenwen, despite her naivety, understood that Zhou Lei treated Huang Mengxue and her differently. He treated her like a younger sister but was tender towards Huang Mengxue, looking after her in every possible way.
When Huang Mengxue sat down, Zhou Lei would wipe down the table for her and would constantly come up with topics to keep her entertained, avoiding boredom. However, when he was with Deng Wenwen, he’d always act like an elder brother, giving her lectures and mentoring her.
The contrast was too obvious, making it easy to tell who he liked.
Tong Yao stated straightforwardly: "Possibly, he believes Huang Mengxue is more suitable for him. Zhou Lei is a very thoughtful person. When choosing a companion, he probably also considers someone who can provide him with beneficial assistance."
From her brief interaction with Huang Mengxue, Tong Yao thought her manner was refined. Despite her ordinary attire, her delicate fingers made it evident she came from a decent family and hadn’t done much hard labor growing up. Zhou Lei’s family isn’t as privileged. If he hopes to enter politics, naturally, he would choose a partner who could benefit his career.
Initially, Tong Yao did not want to give voice to these thoughts. However, seeing Deng Wenwen’s sadness, she decided to share them anyway.
Feelings can’t be forced. Deng Wenwen is still young; she will meet the right person eventually. Realizing this early on may not be the worst thing for her.
Deng Wenwen, being only 18 or 19 years old, had difficulty fully understanding Tong Yao’s remarks. Deng Wenwen, depressed, mistakenly assumed that Zhou Lei sought a partner with matching capabilities. "If I had studied properly and made it into university, would Lei have considered me as well?" she asked.
Tong Yao shook her head gently in comfort and replied, "I don’t know. But you should not overthink this. There is still a long road ahead and many people to meet. Who knows, a few months later, you may feel Zhou Lei is not suitable for you."
"But I feel so sad right now." Deng Wenwen, her eyes watering, replied gloomily, "Sister Yaoyao, thank you for treating me to a meal. I’m going back now."
She had arrived with joy, only to leave dejected. The saying "excited to come, disappointed to leave" fit her perfectly. She needed time to reflect on these matters.
"Go ahead!"
Tong Yao didn’t stop her. Others shouldn’t interfere in matters of the heart. Deng Wenwen and Zhou Lei had never dated; they were merely showing mutual interest. However, as long as Deng Wenwen matures, it won’t take long for her to move on.
After all, it wasn’t a bad thing for Deng Wenwen to have known Zhou Lei. At the very least, Zhou Lei managed to transform Deng Wenwen and helped her get through her teenage rebellion.
But at this moment, Tong Yao, who was still handling others’ emotional issues, was oblivious to the fact that someone was invading her home...
Lin Man, being scolded by Shi Yan, had been behaving for a few days. She knew it was unethical to break up a family unit, and she was aware that Si Chen was her cousin’s husband. However, she was unable to stop herself from constantly thinking about Si Chen. After wrestling with her thoughts for a few days, she decided to visit Si Chen.
To make it look like a casual encounter, she deliberately chose to visit his clinic, pretending to be a patient.
Upon reaching the door of the ward, Lin Man took a deep breath and entered. Si Chen was in the middle of instructing a patient about how to use certain medications. Lin Man greedily watched Si Chen. In her eyes, Si Chen seemed like an angel sent from the heavens, his entire being radiating a dazzling aura. Every move he made tugged at her heartstrings.
If she had considered him a prince in distress while they were in Qing City, right now, he seemed like a high and mighty King. Lin Man felt a sense of excitement stirring within her. She thought that if she missed out on Si Chen, she may never meet a man like him in her lifetime.
"It’s your turn now. Don’t just stand there - we’re all waiting in line."
Someone behind her suddenly gave Lin Man a nudge, jolting her back to reality. She hastily approached Si Chen, momentarily forgetting to act surprised. As she placed her medical records on the table, Si Chen coldly questioned her.
"What’s troubling you?"
"My...my back hurts." The situation was not proceeding as Lin Man had imagined, causing her to feel somewhat flustered.
Still maintaining his focused stare on the medical records, Si Chen continued to inquire, "Where does it hurt?"
A bit out of her element, Lin Man randomly responded, "My lumbar vertebrae."
Before Si Chen could reply, she, trying to conceal her excitement, stated, "Doctor Si, do you remember me? I am Lin Man. You saved me in Qing City. I...I left a note for you. I don’t know if they gave it to you. I didn’t expect we would meet again here. It’s such a coincidence."
Si Chen replied in an indifferent tone, "If it’s your vertebra that’s troubling you, please go to the Orthopedic Department. Take a left when you step out, it’s the third department."
Lin Man felt awkward and rejected when he ignored her and shifted the conversation. "Doctor Si, do you really not remember me? I am Lin Man, the one you saved from beneath the rubble. You even shielded me from a slab of stone. Have you forgotten about that?"
If it weren’t for the fact that Si Chen’s face was deeply etched into her mind, she would have started doubting her own remembrance of him.
Encountering a person that you once saved is a rare connection. Shouldn’t a regular person be excited by such an encounter?
At the very least, they wouldn’t be this apathetic, right?
Maintaining his indifference, Si Chen closed the medical record, pushing it back towards Lin Man. He frowned, stating, "This is a hospital, not a venue for identifying family. Please do not hinder other patients from seeking medical assistance."
"I am here for a medical examination as well." Lin Man turned beet red, the humiliation shattering her heart into pieces.
Si Chen repeated himself, colder this time, "Please visit the Orthopedics Department if you have issues with your spine."
"Young lady, the doctor already made it clear. If you have pain in your spine, you should go to the Orthopedics Department. Don’t delay our medical check-ups here." An older woman waiting in line behind Lin Man was growing impatient and urged Lin Man to leave.
The younger ladies nowadays really have no shame. They see a handsome doctor and have the audacity to blatantly make advances. Despite her old age, she was not blind. This young lass was doing perfectly fine and didn’t have any illness. She was just here to deliberately charm the doctor.
Luckily, the dear Doctor was not that kind of person.
"..."
Feeling utterly humiliated, Lin Man wished a hole would open up on the ground and swallow her up; her eyes turned red. Grabbing her medical record, she made her exit from the clinic in a daze.
"She should have left a while ago." The older woman behind Lin Man grumbled, hurrying to sit before the doctor. "Doctor, can you take a look at this? A piece of metal accidentally scraped my leg. It’s been a few days now, and it hasn’t healed. Instead, it started festering."
