Chapter 345: Chapter 345: Conversation with Officer Zhao

...

Both of them had only left for a while. When they returned to the emergency room, the rescue room door was already opened, and neither Zhao Wenyu nor Fang Xiujing were present.

Wang Chun questioned in confusion, "Has my uncle’s surgery ended?"

Sensing something was wrong, Zhao Wenkai appeared concerned. As a nurse came out, he immediately approached and asked, "What about the patient who was having surgery?"

The nurse, assuming they were family members, and wished to ease their concern over the patient, replied, "He has been transferred to the intensive care unit. You don’t need to worry. The surgery was successful."

"The surgery was successful?" Zhao Wenkai frowned.

"Yes, the surgery was very successful," the nurse affirmed before turning and leaving.

Noticing that Zhao Wenkai looked unhappy, Wang Chun asked with some concern, "Akai, what’s wrong?"

"Nothing," Zhao Wenkai adjusted his facial expression, "Let’s go see my uncle first."

As the two arrived at the door to the intensive care unit, Si Chen and Zhao Wenyu were walking out after giving their instructions.

His gaze casually swept over Zhao Wenkai before he left.

Wang Chun initially wanted to greet Si Chen, but seeing his hurried steps and considering his work hours and their location at his uncle’s ward, it seemed inappropriate to engage in personal conversation. In the end, he didn’t stop him.

Zhao Wenyu, upon seeing Zhao Wenkai, wore a triumphant expression, "You won’t be so pleased for long. Wait until my dad wakes up—then you can look forward to going to jail!"

Zhao Wenyu wasn’t as adept at hiding his emotions as Zhao Wenkai and often wore his heart on his sleeve, but that didn’t mean he was unintelligent.

His father’s car accident didn’t seem accidental at all, especially with the driver currently at large. As soon as his father woke up, and the police caught the person who reported the accident, no amount of excuses from Zhao Wenkai would help.

Zhao Wenkai chuckled softly, his eyes showing disdain, "If you hadn’t been absent during the car accident, I would’ve thought your brain had been damaged."

Having said that, he cast a nonchalant glance at Zhao Wenyu before stepping into the ward. Seeing his move, Zhao Wenyu hastily followed. 𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝒃.𝙘𝙤𝒎

Zhao Wenyu was on guard, "Don’t you dare try anything on my dad."

Zhao Wenkai ignored him and looked at Zhao Rongwei, who was hooked up to a ventilator, before turning to speak to Fang Xiujing.

"Aunt Xiujing, now that my uncle is okay, I need to return to the company. There’s a project of his that hasn’t been finished yet, and I need to arrange for its management."

"Very well, you go ahead and take care of your work. I’m here, you don’t need to worry," Fang Xiujing quickly responded.

Upon taking leave from Fang Xiujing, Wang Chun also greeted her.

The two ran into Lin Man as they exited.

Zhao Wenkai stopped in his tracks, "Are you the nurse in charge here?"

"Yes," Lin Man’s heart skipped a beat, fearing the two had come to stir up trouble, she felt somewhat nervous.

Surprisingly, Zhao Wenkai only cast her a fleeting glance before stepping out.

Only then did Lin Man realize that he was a family member of the patient in the room, and she felt a little anxious.

He didn’t seem like a good person and was definitely not someone she could afford to provoke.

"Achun, weren’t you going to see Tong Yao? You go ahead! I’m going to ask Dr. Si about my uncle’s condition."

After leaving the hospital building, Zhao Wenkai found an excuse to send Wang Chun away.

After inquiring about Si Chen’s department in the main lobby, he then headed straight to the second floor.

He encountered Si Chen just as he was coming out of his department. Closing his lips lightly, he spoke, "Dr. Si, I would like to inquire about my uncle’s condition."

With an official tone, Si Chen responded, "The surgery was successful."

Zhao Wenkai narrowed his eyes when he saw no one around. He said, "Dr. Si, I know your abilities are remarkable, but I think you might have misunderstood me before. I’m considering whether or not to make it clearer: we can collaborate on a win-win deal."

"Mr. Zhao, I’m sorry, but I am a doctor, not a businessman, so I can’t deal or trade with you," Si Chen paused before adding, "Also, as the person responsible for healing the injured that get brought to our hospital, I am merely doing my duty."

Zhao Wenkai understood Si Chen’s implicit message and sneered, "Dr. Si, being too upright might not be a good thing. You are still too young, you assume that being skilled means plentiful opportunities in life. As you’ll learn, behind every successful person, there are some secrets. Life does not always provide lucky encounters, and if you don’t grasp onto them tightly, it’ll be too late when you regret it."

Si Chen listened calmly to Zhao Wenkai’s speech, finally replying emotionlessly, "Thank you for the reminder."

Zhao Wenkai didn’t expect Si Chen to remain indifferent, even after so much had been said. He felt some confusion towards Si Chen’s attitude and decided to test the waters again, "Dr. Si, I don’t like beating around the bush. If you have any other thoughts or requests, feel free to voice them. Although I cannot dominate the entirety of Kyoto, I have accomplished a modest amount. As long as it’s possible, I will try my best to fulfill your requests."

Si Chen’s lips tightened. He responded indifferently, "Mr. Zhao, you’re misunderstanding. I’m just a doctor who saves lives. It’s my duty to save people, and I won’t use a patient’s life for trade. This is the base line of a doctor’s professional ethics. I don’t care about the private grudges of the patient. Whoever it is that arrives in the hospital, in my eyes, they are just patients who need treatment. Even if he is a criminal, the law will provide the necessary punishment."

The two men’s gazes met. Unyielding and unafraid, Si Chen stared back while Zhao Wenkai’s sharp gaze felt like the blade of a knife. After a moment of silent staring, Zhao Wenkai let out a chuckle.

"Dr. Si, regardless of whether you’re feigning virtuousness, or genuinely noble, I believe you’ll change eventually. It’s only a matter of time. I don’t believe anyone can hold on to their initial intentions forever. If someone can, it’s only because the temptation placed in front of them isn’t strong enough." He paused before adding, "We’ll meet again."

After speaking, Zhao Wenkai turned and left the building.

Just as expected, Wang Chun didn’t find anyone at the family ward. Unless there were special circumstances, Tong Yao was usually at the milk tea shop during this time.

Wang Chun’s guess was correct; at the time, Tong Yao indeed was at the milk tea shop.

Just as she arrived, someone walked in that she hadn’t expected to see.

It had been so long since they last met; Yuan Caizhen had lost a lot of weight, almost becoming skin and bones.

She had aged significantly, and looked quite world-weary.

Upon seeing Tong Yao, she let out a bitter smile before sharing recent developments with her.

She and Si Weimin were in the middle of a divorce. Initially, Si Weimin wasn’t keen, which dragged it out. However, when seeing her determination, he started fighting for custody of their child and the division of their property.

Talking about these things, she scoffed at herself, "Yaoyao, I’ve finally realised that no matter how good a relationship may seem, once divorce becomes a part of it, it all boils down to interests. The other party can show their true, ugly colors. The days of love turn into a joke."
