Chapter 394: Chapter 394: This marriage must end
When his father died, Si Boyi was still a young boy, only aware that his mother had fainted from crying, and the adults had brought him and Xiaohui to the village head’s house.
Only later, when they were in mourning, did he realise his father had passed away. As for how he died, Si Boyi didn’t know. He was afraid to ask when he was young, and as he grew up, he didn’t want to upset his mother, so he never asked. In his understanding, he had always thought his father had died from an illness.
Because before his father’s death, all Si Boyi could remember was his father lying in bed all day long, needing help with eating, drinking, and relieving himself, giving off the impression of being seriously ill.
Not until this moment, did Si Boyi realize that his father had actually committed suicide. He simply could not understand why his father would have fallen from the second floor of the hospital. Why would a robust man choose suicide?
Why did his mother and his uncle look terrified, lost for words the moment these matters were brought up? His intuition told him that there was more to these issues that he was unaware of.
"Second Brother, did she brainwash you? You believe everything she says?" Si Xiaohui glared fiercely at Tong Yao. "She is clearly spouting nonsense. Our father was paralyzed because he saved Tong Yaohui. The story about the fall from the second floor of the hospital is all lies concocted by her. Our father died because of the injuries he sustained from the fall and the subsequent illness. Even if it was truly suicide, it was because he could not endure being bedridden for his entire life. Either way, it was her family’s fault for our father’s death! She’s just trying to shrug off responsibility with these far-fetched stories."
Si Xiaohui had always believed that their father had died saving Tong Yaohui. Even if Tong Yao was challenging this belief and her mother and uncle could not provide a response, Si Xiaohui still clung strongly to her belief.
The family lived a blissful and comfortable life back then, filled with joy and three children in the house. Only a lunatic would jump from the second floor of the hospital.
Tong Yao should have come up with a more believable lie instead of treating everyone like fools.
Si Boyi did not respond to Si Xiaohui, instead, he looked steadily at Lin Fengying, wanting only the answer from her.
Tong Yao was right. This matter should be clarified. The Tong family should not always bear this responsibility. Seeing his elder brother and Tong Yao carrying these burdens in their daily lives was uncomfortable. Now that these issues were raised, they should clarify everything once and for all. What’s so difficult about discussing these?
Lin Fengying felt extremely ashamed under the gaze of her younger son, wishing she could crawl into a crack on the ground. Her lips trembled for a long while, and she couldn’t speak a word.
The incident back then was not solely Lin Fengying’s fault. Si Weimin felt guilty seeing her in this state and was displeased with Tong Yao. Having lived in Kyoto for so many years, his mind was quick to react, and he solemnly said.
"Regardless of whether your father-in-law committed suicide or died from illness back then, if you trace it back to the root, it was because he tried to save your father, that led to his accident and making the Si Family’s life difficult. You can’t use his cause of death as an excuse for not filially supporting your mother-in-law."
Tong Yao wasn’t a fool. She could tell that Si Weimin intended to perfunctorily explain away the cause of her father-in-law’s death. She replied sarcastically.
"Uncle, since you insisted that I’m not filial to my mother-in-law, perhaps you can allow her to tell me what enormous shames I’ve brought on her. I’m curious about where I went wrong to anger her too. Don’t rush, we have plenty of time for a slow talk. Ahchen has already said that when he returns from work today, we, as a family, should sit together and have a thorough discussion. When my father-in-law passed away, Ahchen was already sensible enough, so we can sort everything out now."
As soon as Tong Yao finished speaking, Lin Fengying reacted as if stabbed, suddenly pounding her chest and screaming, "Enough, stop talking! Do you want me dead before you’ll stop?"
Perhaps she was overly upset, she rolled her eyes and fainted. Fortunately, Si Weimin reacted quickly enough to catch her, "Sister-in-law!"
"Mother!"
Si Weimin and Si Xiaohui were also taken aback.
"You wicked woman, you are literally angering my mother to death." Seeing the opportunity, Si Xiaohui started to release her anger on Tong Yao, but was silenced with a cold glance from Tong Yao.
"Mother, are you okay!" Zhang Lijuan, who finally came back to her senses after the commotion, hurried forward.
Ever since she saw Si Weimin and Si Xiaohui, she was taken aback with disbelief. When Si Weimin had left the village, she was still young, so she didn’t remember him clearly. She had only heard from her mother that Si Xiaohui looked similar to Si Weimin, but she never really took it to heart since she didn’t see it with her own eyes. Now that she saw Si Weimin, she was absolutely sure that Si Xiaohui was indeed Si Weimin’s child.
Later, when she saw Uncle blaming Tong Yao, Zhang Lijuan didn’t dare to say anything. Although she wasn’t close to Tong Yao, she certainly wouldn’t defend her. Suddenly, when everyone started discussing the cause of her father-in-law’s death, Zhang Lijuan dared not say a word anymore and silently watched the drama unfold.
Seeing Lin Fengying faint from anger, she finally snapped back to reality.
If something were to happen to Lin Fengying now, both she and Tong Yao would be blamed for killing their mother-in-law. Who would dare marry her son then?
Fortunately, Lin Fengying didn’t have a significant problem. After a while, she got better, but there was only one thought in her mind now.
With trembling hands, she pointed at Tong Yao and said, "Divorce, we must divorce. We can’t afford to keep you as our daughter-in-law. Xiaochen must divorce you. If he doesn’t divorce you, I will sever my relationship with him."
This marriage must be annulled, otherwise, she would never be able to raise her head in front of Tong Yao.
Tong Yao remained silent. She wasn’t foolish. No one could understand Lin Fengying’s thoughts better than her. Lin Fengying must have guessed that she knew everything and was feeling guilty. Therefore, she was blaming everything on her.
Si Boyi became anxious. "Mother, don’t say such things in anger." His elder brother and his wife had a healthy relationship. Why would they need a divorce?
Si Xiaohui, on the other hand, was overjoyed. If only her mother had realized this sooner. It would be even better if her second brother also got divorced. That way, their family could return to the old days when both her elder and second brothers cared for her.
"Sister-in-law, let me take you to rest."
Giving Tong Yao a deep glance, Si Weimin supported the weakened Lin Fengying and walked out of the room. Si Boyi, being worried, followed them but was stopped by Si Weimin.
"I’ll accompany your mother to rest first. You and your elder brother should sit down and discuss thoroughly how to take care of your mother in future. And also manage your wives. Once everything is settled, we can all go together to pick up your mother."
Si Boyi glared angrily, wanting to argue, but Si Xiaohui interrupted him. "Second Brother, are you really willing to let those two women in the room kill our mother with anger?"
Si Boyi glared at her, but seeing Lin Fengying gasping for breath, he finally held back, silently watching the three of them leave.
The room was filled with the sound of a child’s crying. Si Boyi hurried back into the room to find Zhang Lijuan skillfully picking up the child and breastfeeding him.
Giving Tong Yao a look, he apologized. "Sister-in-law, don’t take mother’s words to heart. She was just angry."
