Chapter 47: Chapter 47: Why Do You Hit Her
Everyone took their seats as commanded. Yu Zhengxiong stood there with a face as cold as stone, without uttering a word. The recent series of events had extremely damaged his reputation.
Tong Yao didn’t seat herself. She no longer had the appetite for dinner. She came today for the purpose of confronting Yu Shiya. Now that her objective had been achieved, she felt no need to continue eating the awful meal.
To everyone’s surprise, before she opened her mouth, Si Chen suddenly spoke, "Dean, we’re not going to have dinner today. Enjoy your meal."
Saying so, he held Tong Yao’s hand and walked away.
Yu Zhengxiong remained silent with a sickly face, while Cheng Yu looked displeased, "Young people today are indeed too haughty, they cannot endure a bit of adversity."
The moment she finished speaking, Zhao Dongqing, who had been silent, suddenly stood up, "This scene is not suitable for an old man like me."
Ignoring the calls of Yu Zhengxiong and Cheng Yu, he walked straight out.
The people in the canteen dared not make a sound, afraid to get on the bad side of the Dean and his wife.
The good birthday banquet had turned out like this; feeling awful was the least of their worries. Regrettably, they only had themselves to blame, as they’d started it all.
Ah! What a waste of good food. Everyone ate in silence, then dispersed casually after finishing their meals.
...
Meanwhile, here.
Tong Yao followed Si Chen until they reached the entrance of the residential buildings, only then did they notice that their hands were still interlocked. She snorted, pulled her hand away and sarcastically criticized Si Chen, "Dr. Si, after all this it seems Dr. Yu doesn’t know who your wife is, right? No wonder everyone has been saying behind my back that I’m not pretty, it turns out they all think I’m merely your neighbour."
After making her point, she ran up the stairs, her characteristic pout evident.
Si Chen remained where he was for a moment, his lips pursed. It was understandable that she was mad for being questioned about her identity in such a situation.
Zhao Dongqing, who had been following, saw Si Chen standing motionless at the stairwell. He benevolently patted his shoulder and advised, "Although your generation’s thinking is different from ours, when a wife is angry, it is still necessary to coax her. Today’s incident certainly upset her, quickly go make some food. Don’t let her starve."
"Yes." Si Chen nodded and apologized, "I’m sorry, Mr. Zhao, for the impact today’s incident had on you."
Zhao Dongqing being here at the residential area indicated that he too left the banquet early. Though Si Chen knew this issue wasn’t of Zhao’s making, he was implicated. He was aware of the circulating rumors about him in the hospital, but he chose to ignore them.
"I like peace in my old age. This has nothing to do with you." Zhao Dongqing waved him off, "Hurry up!"
Si Chen wasn’t the talkative type. Hearing Zhao’s words, he didn’t say anything further. Upon returning to their room, he saw Tong Yao lying on the bed like a steamed bun, sulking. He switched on the fan for her and then headed to the kitchen with some vegetables.
Before long, the aroma of food wafted from the kitchen. Tong Yao’s stomach instantly growled cooperatively. As she muttered to herself about her weak will, she downed a glass of cold water to temporarily fill her stomach.
In less than half an hour, Si Chen had cooked three dishes and a soup. Apart from the scrambled eggs with chili, the rest were vegetable dishes. He served the food to Tong Yao before heading to the fourth floor with a prepared meal for Zhao Dongqing.
Despite being hungry, Tong Yao didn’t have the habit of eating alone. She waited at the table for Si Chen to return before starting to eat. Although they’d quarreled, her appetite was unaffected and she devoured two bowls of rice, which calmed her anger.
Once Si Chen had finished cleaning up, he observed that Tong Yao’s expression had improved. He sat down next to her and asked, "Feeling better now?"
Tong Yao snorted, turned her head to the other side, her voice filled with unspoken anger, "Why would I be angry?"
"..."
Si Chen, who was never good at placating women, was left stumped by Tong Yao’s rhetorical question.
After thinking for a while, he explained as per his understanding, "I’m sorry for what happened today."
It’s not that Si Chen liked taking responsibility for everything. Although this incident wasn’t his fault, it was due to him.
What he didn’t know was, that his apology now sounded to Tong Yao as if he was apologizing for Yu Shiya.
Ah!
They were truly in love, but Tong Yaohui had insisted on marrying his daughter to Si Chen. When it comes down to it, she felt like she was an obstacle. Yu Shiya could have married Si Chen directly. Now, even if she waits for their divorce to be together with him, it would still be considered as remarriage on his part. Moreover, watching the man she likes day and night with another woman, it was reasonable for her to have a high-handed attitude.
Tong Yao estimated Yu Shiya felt threatened once she realized how pretty Tong Yao was, hence the subsequent incident.
After analyzing everything, Tong Yao wasn’t that angry anymore, after all, she wasn’t at a disadvantage and it wasn’t her who was embarrassed today.
"Forget it, there’s nothing to be angry about."
Seeing Tong Yao’s sudden change in expression, Si Chen wanted to say something, but he didn’t eventually. He sat in silence in the room for a few minutes before returning to his office.
The banquet at the canteen also ended early. Cheng Yu took Yu Shiya to the Dean’s office. As soon as the door closed, a resounding slap echoed through the office. Yu Shiya was taken aback, she covered her face, looking at Yu Zhengxiong in a daze. It was only after quite some time that she managed to utter a word.
"Dad."
Since her childhood, she had been treated like a precious jewel by her family, never having experienced a slap.
This slap not only stunned Yu Shiya but also Cheng Yu. After recovering, she immediately ended up in a shouting match with Yu Zhengxiong.
"What are you doing? If you’re so capable, release your anger on others. Why are you hitting your own daughter? My daughter, whom I bore strenuously for ten months. I never had the heart to slap her even once, who are you to hit her?"
"Shut up!"
Yu Zhengxiong yelled furiously.
It was rare for him to get this angry, let alone yell at the two of them. His sudden outburst scared both Cheng Yu and Yu Shiya, and they instantly fell quiet.
Yu Zhengxiong glared fiercely at both of them. After a long while, he suppressed the anger in his heart and said in a restrained voice, "What happened today is not to be brought up ever again. In the future, Shiya should keep her distance from Si Chen. There is no need to meet in private if it’s unnecessary."
His tone was absolute, leaving no room for discussion. His intention was clear. Even if Si Chen divorced Tong Yao in the future, he wouldn’t allow Si Chen to be with Shiya. The incident today had already caused them to lose face once. If they were to end up together in the future, irrespective of whether Shiya played a role in ruining Si Chen’s marriage, their past would be dug up again and Shiya would forever carry the stigma of a home-wrecker.
Yu Zhengxiong had conservative ideas deeply ingrained in him. He had already regretted once, having been persuaded by Liu Haisheng to convince Si Chen for a divorce. He wouldn’t allow himself to regret a second time.
