Chapter 544: Chapter 544: What Can Her Mother Do to Me?
Guo Jinnian was shocked and very unsatisfied. She threw the rush mat angrily onto the ground, accusing Gu Hongwei, "Hongwei, I am a woman after all. How could you ask me to sleep under a big tree? That decent of you at all?"
Thinking of the scene in the courtyard just now, a vein popped in Gu Hongwei’s forehead. Usually calm and gentle, he had never lost his temper before. More than anger, he felt embarrassed.
He closed his eyes, regaining control of his feelings, "Have you ever seen a woman peeping at a man bathing? Even men aren’t as audacious as you."
Guo Jinnian snorted, crossing her arms and said, "When was I peeping at you? I said it was a misunderstanding. You’re acting as if you were an innocent woman who was wronged. I hardly saw anything."
While she was speaking, her gaze deliberately landed on Gu Hongwei’s waist, which embarrassed him enough to paint his face red. He chose to ignore her.
Entering his room, Gu Hongwei fetched another rush mat and walked out of the courtyard. He laid it under the tree at the entrance and went to sleep.
The weather was hot and there were no fans in the house. It was stifling inside the house at night, while it was rather cool outside. Many villagers would sleep under the trees in front of their homes. As a single man, Gu Hongwei was quite indifferent to where he slept, and he had spent the last two nights the same way.
Half of the reason Gu Hongwei had asked Guo Jinnian to find a tree for herself was out of rage, the other half was because it was unbearable to sleep inside due to the heat and mosquitoes. It was more comfortable to sleep outside.
Rolling her eyes, Guo Jinnian picked up the mat and walked to Gu Hongwei’s side without uttering a word. She placed the mat beside Gu Hongwei and unceremoniously lay down. However, Gu Hongwei abruptly sat up as if he were scalded.
"Guo Jinnian, have you gone mad?"
Guo Jinnian glared at him, "What on earth are you freaking out about?"
Gu Hongwei grumbled, "Why are you sleeping here?"
Guo Jinnian raised her eyebrows, "Didn’t you tell me to sleep wherever I like? This is where I choose."
Gu Hongwei took a deep breath, "Fine, you sleep here!"
Having said this, he rolled up his mat and shifted under another tree.
Seeing this, Guo Jinnian immediately dragged her mat over to lie beside Gu Hongwei again. Gu Hongwei got up to move once more, and Guo Jinnian followed suit.
Gu Hongwei’s anger and frustration only made Guo Jinnian want to tease him more.
After such teasing a few times, Gu Hongwei was so irritated that he lost all patience. "Guo Jinnian, what on earth do you want?"
Guo Jinnian feigned innocence, "I’m afraid of ghosts, so I want to sleep close to you."
Gu Hongwei sternly reminded her, "You’re a girl, I’m a man."
Guo Jinnian responded, "I know! You wouldn’t try anything, so what’s the problem with sleeping together?"
Gu Hongwei was dumbfounded. After all the previous rounds of this, he was exhausted. Instead of continuing to engage in this nonsense, he laid down on his mat, not caring where Guo Jinnian was sleeping.
However, as soon as he lay down, Guo Jinnian wrapped herself around him like an octopus, Gu Hongwei struggled a bit without breaking free, gritting his teeth he said, "Guo Jinnian, what on earth do you want?"
If not for the fear of disturbing the villagers, he would have already yelled out loud.
Guo Jinnian with her eyes closed, said, "Stop making noise, I’m sleepy."
Guo Jinnian had been on the train for two days and had just had a long argument. She was already exhausted and all she wanted was to sleep. She just clung to Gu Hongwei, afraid that he would run away while she was asleep.
Gu Hongwei struggled for a while, but he couldn’t break free. He decided to wait till Guo Jinnian fell asleep and then separate himself from her. But before he knew it, he himself fell asleep first.
When they woke up in the morning, they were startled by Wang Da’s four-year-old grandson, Huo Wa. Dressed in split pants, Huo Wa crouched in front of them, looking curiously at them. Seeing them awake, he covered his eyes and laughed.
"So big and still need someone to hold you while sleeping, you’re so shy..."
Feeling his face turn red, Gu Hongwei cried out to Guo Jinnian, "Morning’s here and we have company! Get up!"
Still in a daze, Guo Jinnian opened her eyes, noticed that it was morning, and released Gu Hongwei. She rubbed her eyes and then sat up, yawning, "I was so tired these last few days, I fell into a deep sleep."
Seeing the kid next to her, she raised an eyebrow and asked, "Who does this brat belong to? He’s so big yet still wearing split pants."
Huo Wa who was laughing just a moment ago, burst into tears at her words. Guo Jinnian glared at him, "What are you crying about? I didn’t hit you. I just mentioned that you are too big to be still wearing split pants, aren’t you too sensitive?"
Gu Hongwei was at a loss for words. He tried to soothe the crying Huo Wa, but as soon as Huo Wa stopped crying, Guo Jinnian made a scary face at him that set him off again. 𝒏𝒐𝒗𝒑𝒖𝙗.𝒄𝒐𝒎
This time Huo Wa didn’t give Gu Hongwei a chance to soothe him. He ran home crying. Feeling helpless, Gu Hongwei was at a loss of how to deal with Guo Jinnian.
This girl’s skin was as thick as a brick and there was no way of making her feel embarrassed.
"You better brace yourself! That child’s mother bears no nonsense."
Guo Jinnian let out a cold, sneering laugh, "Oh, what can his mother do to me?"
Before Gu Hongwei could respond, she spoke again, "Get me something to eat! I’m starving."
Gu Hongwei, feeling a headache coming on, rubbed his temples and entered the kitchen to prepare some rice porridge for Guo Jinnian. The household provisions comprised only of the rice Gu Hongwei had brought from the town.
Just as he was about to put water in the pot, he could hear the shouting of Huo Wa’s mother from outside. "Hongwei, will you please come out? What’s happening? Huo Wa said that someone bullied him. Did you see who it was?"
When Gu Hongwei and Guo Jinnian walked out of the kitchen, they saw Huo Wa’s mother holding him, standing at the entrance. Seeing Huo Wa’s mother, Guo Jinnian couldn’t help but twitch. At a time when many people struggled to get enough to eat, Huo Wa’s mother bloated like a balloon.
What a well-off family!
Before Gu Hongwei and Guo Jinnian could say anything, Huo Wa, who was on his mother’s lap, pointed at them and began to cry loudly. Seeing this, Huo Wa’s mother instantly understood that Guo Jinnian was the culprit and glared at her. "Who are you anyway? Why did you bully my four-year-old child Huo Wa?"
Guo Jinnian rolled her eyes, "I did not bully him at all. He just loves to cry."
Huo Wa’s mother was unhappy with that answer. "If you did not scare him, why would he cry?"
No sooner had she spoken, than crying Huo Wa suddenly stopped. He pointed at Gu Hongwei and Guo Jinnian, "They are shy. They sleep hugging each other."
Hearing this, Huo Wa’s mother, as if she had discovered some big secret, glanced at Gu Hongwei and Guo Jinnian with scorn.
