Chapter 596: Chapter 596: All Future Generations Will Produce College Graduates

Guo Jinnian’s eyes bulged, wishing he could swallow Madame Guo whole. "What’s there to talk about, and why should I talk to him? If you think that he’s so good, then marry off your own daughter. I’ll give double the dowry. If you are reluctant to give away your own daughter, then don’t mess with others."

Madame Guo didn’t expect Guo Jinnian to be so sharp-tongued. It infuriated her, but instead of losing her temper, she patiently coaxed Guo Jinnian.

"Jinnian, oh, I mean well proposing this marriage for you. Even if you don’t like him, there’s no need to be so harsh, is there? Where is Chen not good enough for you? He’s helping the town build a dam now. He earns one yuan a day. Who in our village can make that much? For you, he even took a leave today. Tell me, which man ever treated you so well? All his efforts show his heartfelt feelings for you. Where can you find such a good man?"

Madame Guo sung praises of Chen, as if it was a crime for Guo Jinnian not to marry him. It was so ridiculous, Tong Yao could not help but laugh and cry.

She spoke up, "Madame Guo, have you forgotten why my brother and I came here this time?"

Madame Guo, hearing Tong Yao chimed in, immediately put on a welcoming smile. As she stepped forward to hold onto Tong Yao, Guo Jinnian padded his way in front, saying, "Speak if you want to speak, stay away from Yaoyao."

If her arm hadn’t been injured, and if Tong Yao weren’t pregnant, Guo Jinnian would have already dealt with Madame Guo. She had never seen such a nauseating matchmaker before.

Without arguing with Guo Jinnian, Madame Guo turned aside to look at Tong Yao hiding behind him. She presented a flatteringly smile and said, "Miss Yao, I know you came to propose marriage for your little brother. But you know what, fate is a funny thing. I’ve consulted a fortune teller who told me Jinnian has a tough life and would bring ill fortune to her husband. Her only chance is to marry a divorcee. No one else can contain her cursed fate. Xiaotao, my girl, on the other hand, she’ll bring prosperity to her husband. Whoever gets to marry her will strike gold right in the family’s ancestral grave and all future generations will produce college graduates."

Even experience-rich Tong Yao turned cold at Madame Guo’s words. Had it not be for her unborn child, she would have slapped her hard in the face.

"Madame Guo, watch your words, they better make sense. Don’t spit out unrealistic nonsense. If it weren’t for the fact that I’m pregnant and have a better temper now, I wouldn’t hesitate to slap people for saying such things."

Guo Jinnian also had a cold face, clenching his teeth and saying, "Were it not for my injured arm, do you believe I would flip your house upside down?"

Madame Guo flinched with fright at Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian’s fury, and instinctively took a step back. But having said what she had said, she didn’t plan to take her words back and insisted, "Believe it or not, I already checked it with a fortune teller."

Before she could finish speaking, Chen had had enough and expressed his anger. "Madame Guo, you are being very dishonest. If my Xiaotao has such a good fate, then I’ll marry your Xiaotao! Why should I marry Guo Jinnian?"

Chen started to feel carried away since Madame Guo showered him with praises, no matter how questionable he found them to be.

Although Guo Jinnian looks not bad, he doesn’t like her. It’s not that he despises Guo Jinnian, it’s because this woman is too fierce and he can’t handle her.

The only reason he came to court Guo Jinnian was that Madame Guo told him that Guo Jinnian had money, a house in the city, and ample savings at home, all of which would be his once they were married.

And also, Madame Guo said that once a woman got married her temper would subside and she would submit to her husband. Right?

Chen thought Madame Guo made a lot of sense. Once Guo Jinnian became a part of the Chen Family, how unruly could she possibly be?

However, learning Guo Jinnian brings ill fortune to her husband, Chen began to hesitate. He didn’t think he could handle Guo Jinnian, and suddenly Xiaotao seemed much more appealing.

Xiaotao, young, beautiful, and gentle, was completely unlike the screeching Guo Jinnian. Besides, Xiaotao was supposed to bring prosperity to her husband. Comparatively speaking, he would be better off marrying Xiaotao than Guo Jinnian.

The moment Madame Guo heard that, she almost choked with anger, barking "Aw, shoot! Now you, a toad, want to eat swan meat, ah?"

Those words were meant to intimidate Tong Yao earlier, and she never expected that Chen, the damned fool, would now have designs on her Xiaotao. Can an ugly duckling like him match up to her Xiaotao?

Keep dreaming! 𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙥𝒖𝒃.𝙘𝙤𝒎

Out of all her daughters, Xiaotao is by far the most beautiful one. Madame Guo had been waiting to pick a wealthy family for her to marry into.

Chen’s friendly expression was replaced by indignant scowling "Madame Guo, what are you trying to suggest?"

Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian watched as the fight turned on its head. They exchanged eye contact and instantly burst out laughing.

They were in less of a hurry to leave now and stood by with arms crossed, waiting to see the spectacle unfold.

Madame Guo stood glaring at Chen, cursing him in her heart for being a fool. She had no choice but to pull him aside and speak to him in hushed tones, "Are you stupid? I fabricated those fortunes just to bamboozle them. Even Tong Yao doesn’t believe it, but you, you fell for it first. Do you really think that you are in such high demand? You should’ve just looked at your own face in the mirror. Didn’t you bully your wife to death? Who wouldn’t know of that in our town? If I hadn’t said those things, would Guo Jinnian agree to marry you? Who in these villages around here would agree to marry you?"

"If you could marry Guo Jinnian now, it would be thanks to your ancestors. Otherwise, brace yourself to remain a bachelor for life! Do you really think Guo Jinnian is unwanted? Now, city folks have come to propose to her, promising not only to build her a fancy house but also to pave roads for our village. How could you compete with that? We have to use some trickery, you know. Women love to hear sweet nothings. Go and sweet talk her."

Because Chen mentioned marrying her daughter, Madame Guo flew into a rage and bitterly reprimanded Chen. But eventually, she relented and spoke more softly.

Being boosted up only to be let down again by Madame Guo, Chen was forced back to reality.

He thought about it carefully, and it seemed that Madame Guo was right. "So, how do I sweet talk her? I don’t know how to talk to a woman, and I don’t know what she wants to hear."

Madame Guo gave him a stern look. "If you can’t even sweet talk a woman, what can you do? Just feed her whatever sweet words come to your mind."

Chen thought about it and agreed. He turned to confront Guo Jinnian only to see that she and Tong Yao had both walked far away.

Without a second thought, Chen hurried after them, calling out, "Jinnian, don’t leave yet! Wait for me!"

As Chen reached out to grab Guo Jinnian’s arm, she skillfully ducked his grab. Seeing Chen just made her feel sick. Frowning, she warned, "Chen, you better not provoke me. Just because I can’t hit you now, don’t think I won’t come back for you later when I’m healed. I’m the type who bears grudges."

Chen, who had been quarrelling with Guo Jinnian just now, had not taken a really good look at her. Now that he looked more carefully, he found that Guo Jinnian was not only not ugly, but looked quite good actually, at least better than his deceased wife.
