Chapter 598: Chapter 598: Eating Something Dirty Does Not Necessarily Cause Sickness

Upon seeing Mrs. Guo’s scared appearance, Guo Jinnian felt especially satisfied. He threatened her, "If you want to leave, better do it now. If it gets any later, I might just add ten thousand and overturn your house."

Hearing his words, Mrs. Guo could no longer stay and fled faster than a rabbit. Seeing her in this state, Guo Jinnian laughed heartily, dispelling his gloomy mood.

Tong Yao looked at Gu Hongwei with surprise. To be honest, she didn’t expect the words spoken earlier to come from Gu Hongwei. He seemed honest and straightforward, hardly joked, and was now offering to pay ten thousand yuan to buy someone off. This surprised Tong Yao greatly.

Tong Yao chuckled, "Hongwei, what you said worked magnificently and terrified Chen Lao Wu. Even if we gave him five hundred yuan, he wouldn’t dare come here to bother Jinnian again."

Gu Hongwei had felt angry when he saw how Chen Lao Wu verbally insulted Guo Jinnian and wanted to hit Tong Yao. Adding to that the crafty ideas he picked up from Tong Yao during their time together, he blurted them out on the spur of the moment.

At Tong Yao’s words, Gu Hongwei managed a witty remark, "You taught me well."

Guo Jinnian chimed in with a radiant smile, "I knew you couldn’t say something so bold. Turns out you’ve been learning from Tong Yao. But honestly, what you said earlier was great. Consider me owing you one, I’ll return the favor."

Guo Jinnian didn’t know if her tastes had changed, but she found Gu Hongwei much more handsome gloating in those words than men who could only rant and rave.

In the past, she never liked literate men, thinking they were weak. They looked like chickens, lacking masculinity. Her view only changed at that moment.

Actually, strictly speaking, it changed from the moment she met Si Chen overseas, but the feeling then was completely different.

Gu Hongwei’s gaze lingered on Guo Jinnian for a moment. He then said with some resignation, "Just take care of yourself. Don’t go around picking fights, your arm needs at least a year or two to recover."

Upon hearing Gu Hongwei’s words of concern, Guo Jinnian felt her face heating up. She awkwardly averted her gaze from him, saying awkwardly, "I’m not a fighting rooster. I don’t love fighting that much."

Tong Yao’s twinkling eyes danced between the two, barely holding back her laughter. Guo Jinnian actually knew how to be shy, an occurrence that happened once in a blue moon!

"Sis, brother-in-law, dinner’s ready." Guo Miaomiao’s voice echoed through the room.

The term "brother-in-law" caused a pause in Tong Yao, Guo Jinnian and Gu Hongwei, especially Gu Hongwei whose embarrassed expression contrasted sharply with his decisive and heroic demeanor when dealing with Chen Lao Wu earlier. 𝚗o𝚟pub.𝚌𝚘𝚖

Coughing awkwardly, Gu Hongwei suggested, "Let’s eat first."

Tong Yao, suppressing her laughter, nodded, "Let’s go"

Guo Jinnian strides over to Guo Miaomiao, gives her a tap on the back of the head, "Enough with the nonsense!"

Guo Miaomiao touched the back of her head, at a loss for words. "Sis, isn’t he here to propose? You guys are about to get married, what else should I call him?"

"Keep at it," Guo Jinnian glared at Miaomiao, "Go back and help mother."

Guo Miaomiao responded with an "oh" and hurried back.

Guo Jinnian cast a guilty glance at Gu Hongwei, then looped her arm through Tong Yao’s and together they walked into the courtyard. Her heart started pounding uncontrollably.

Guo Jinnian instinctively laid her hand on her chest and wondered if she was suffering from some kind of condition. Recently, her heartbeat had been quite irregular.

The Guo Family’s hall wasn’t big. Now that all the relatives were here and it was too cramped indoors, they moved the table to the courtyard. Deng Qiuxia brought all the cooked meals to the table and warmly welcomed Tong Yao and Gu Hongwei when she saw them return.

"Yaoyao, Hongwei, come and eat while the food’s still warm. It’ll cool down quickly in this weather."

Tong Yao nodded, "Thank you, auntie. I’ll go wash my hands first."

Guo Jinnian brought out a basin of warm water from the kitchen, "Yaoyao, here’s the water."

Uncle Guo remarked sarcastically, "We use chopsticks to eat, not our hands. Why the fuss? Just sit down and eat."

Uncle Guo was already salivating over the good food and drinks that he typically wouldn’t be able to afford.

Guo Xinpei remembered that when Deng Qiuxia first came, she always washed her hands before eating. Knowing that this was a habit of cleanliness among their generation, he feigned being just as fastidious. "How can you eat without washing your hands? Come and wash your hands, in our family we always wash our hands before meals."

With that, he went up and scrubbed his hands in the basin. The once clean water turned murky with his washing.

Uncle Guo harrumphed, "I’ve never washed before meals all these years and nothing happened. You guys are just being nitpicky."

Despite his complaints, he still went up to the basin and mockingly washed his hands.

Seeing this, Tong Yao and Gu Hongwei, who were partially done, decided not to continue washing their hands. They dried their hands and sat at the table.

"Let’s eat before the food gets cold," Deng Hongxia brought out two bowls of rice from the kitchen and handed them to Gu Hongwei and Tong Yao. She then added, "We didn’t go to the market today and don’t have many vegetables. You guys eat this for now. I’ll buy vegetables from the town tomorrow morning and prepare something delicious for lunch."

Guo Xinpei glared at Deng Qiuxia, "Why are you serving Hongwei rice? I was planning to share a few drinks with him. You’re old enough yet still don’t know better."

He then tried to take Gu Hongwei’s rice bowl, intending for him to drink instead, but Gu Hongwei waved his hand to decline, "Uncle Guo, I don’t drink."

Tong Yao added on, "My little brother just graduated from University, and he hasn’t learned how to drink yet. You elders go ahead and drink."

Guo Xinpei was a bit disappointed to hear Gu Hongwei doesn’t drink, but didn’t force him, merely saying, "How could a man not drink? It’s fine if you don’t drink this first time. You’ll need to learn next time."

With that said, he started drinking with Uncle Guo and others, occasionally boasting about Tong Yao and Gu Hongwei’s good fortune, sharing in detail with the other relatives.

All the rest were astounded. They knew that Gu Hongwei is here for the proposal, but they didn’t expect his family to be that wealthy.

No wonder Guo Xinpei was in such high spirits, serving meat and wine. It turns out that Guo Jinnian snagged a rich boss for herself.

Their attitude towards Gu Hongwei has completely changed. They held him in such high regard, comparable to divine worship.
