Guo Yun was played by Tong Yao, and she was livid. She glared at Tong Yao. No one had ever dared to mess with her like this before, and it was infuriating.
Xiang Youyou began to size up Tong Yao, wondering who she could be. As far as she knew, there wasn’t a well-known family surnamed Tong in Kyoto, meaning this Miss Tong might be nothing more than nouveau riche.
That was hardly something to be feared.
Tong Yao ignored Xiang Youyou’s scrutinizing gaze. She was here to shop happily with Guo Jinnian and had no desire to pay any mind to irrelevant people.
Guo Jinnian quickly emerged from the fitting room dressed in a new outfit. Unsurprisingly, the dress was beautiful. It was white and had a dreamy, floaty feel to it. The owner of the shop, seeing her, immediately started heaping praise upon her.
"Oh my, Miss Tong, you have such excellent taste. You selected this beautiful dress, and with Miss Guo’s figure, she completely does justice to this dress," she complimented.
Both dresses were expensive and beyond the means of typical customers. But the shop owner knew Tong Yao could afford them. The fact that Tong Yao had brought a friend to shop there, knowing the prices of the clothes, meant the friend must also have some economic means.
These two ladies, Guo Yun and Xiang Youyou, had asked for the price of one dress and then commented that it was expensive. Their financial means weren’t as great as Tong Yao’s, a fact the store owner understood perfectly well, though she didn’t comment on it.
They claimed it was expensive, yet they still tried it on, suggesting that they could afford it — only that their financial means wasn’t as much as Tong Yao’s.
"Yaoyao, you have a good eye indeed. I really like this dress. It’s a bit longer, so I won’t have to worry about exposing myself when bending over," Guo Jinnian praised Tong Yao’s taste. She always liked shopping with Tong Yao because every piece that Tong Yao selected was gorgeous.
Guo Jinnian, who had a great figure and was tall, was usually more accustomed to wearing unisex clothing. When it came to choosing something more feminine, she was at a loss as to what style would suit her.
Luckily, she had Tong Yao to guide her.
Tong Yao laughed, "Then you should get both dresses! I’ll pick something out too. I haven’t bought new clothes in a while."
Upon hearing that Tong Yao was going to choose clothes, Guo Yun’s eyes widened. Regardless of what Tong Yao chose this time, she decided to snatch it right away.
This woman was too cunning.
Tong Yao didn’t even look at Guo Yun. As she scanned the store and touched a light blue dress, Guo Yun shouted, "Shop owner, let me try the dress she’s holding!"
The shop owner looked conflicted. It was clear to her that Guo Yun was picking a fight with Tong Yao. But why? Tong Yao hadn’t even spoken to her.
Tong Yao just smiled, "It’s okay, let her try it on."
The shop owner gratefully nodded at Tong Yao, considering giving her dresses a discount.
Having learnt a lesson already, Guo Yun, upon hearing Tong Yao willingly give up the dress, felt that Tong Yao must be scheming again. She wouldn’t be fooled this time, so she accepted the dress from the shop owner and went into the fitting room.
Shortly after, she walked out of the fitting room wearing the dress. As soon as Xiang Youyou saw her, she frowned. Guo Yun looked into a mirror and was livid.
The style of the dress made her look ten years older. This was not meant for young people to wear, but more fitting for an old woman. Even her mother wouldn’t want to wear this.
Guo Yun was furious. Only now did she realize she had been played, that Tong Yao did it on purpose.
She couldn’t take it anymore. Glaring at Tong Yao, she demanded, "What’s your deal? Did you do this on purpose?"
To which Tong Yao merely shrugged in feigned innocence and replied, "Miss, I really don’t understand what you’re talking about. I don’t think I’ve ever even spoken to you. Was there something I did or said to provoke you?"
Guo Yun was so furious she stomped her foot, "You deliberately enticed me to try this dress. You’re such a venomous woman."
Tong Yao chuckled, "If you want to snatch things from other people that badly, don’t blame us."
Guo Jinnian nodded in agreement. "Exactly. There are so many other clothes, but you had to snatch the ones we were holding. Something must be wrong with you."
"Who are you calling weird? What makes you think you’re anything special? Do you think you’re a high-class shopper just because you walked into a high-end boutique?" Guo Yun shot back, glaring at Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian as if she wanted to devour them.
Xiang Youyou stepped in, pulling at Guo Yun’s arm, "Leave it. Don’t bother arguing with these indecent people. You’re above it."
Guo Yun felt vindicated by this and said haughtily, "Exactly, debating with these unreasonable people does indeed lower our standards."
"Who are you calling unreasonable?" Guo Jinnian’s temper flared. "We’ve been courteous to you, haven’t we? If you think you’re all that after a few concessions, then you really don’t know where you stand, do you?"
Guo Jinnian never lost in a verbal brawl. She could handle men as well, let alone these two girls. She was ready to give them a piece of her mind.
The shop owner, seeing the situation devolve into a fight, quickly tried to intervene, "Ladies, there’s no need for a fight. We’re all here just to shop and buy clothes."
"What do you mean ’unreasonable’?" Guo Yun ignored the shop owner and continued arguing with Guo Jinnian, "Does this place even belong to the likes of you? Do you possess the elegance to be shopping here? It appears the shop owner these days are willing to stoop so low for money, letting any Tom, Dick or Harry into her store."
Guo Jinnian couldn’t hold back her laughter, "Who are you calling cats and dogs? You think you’re doing me a favor? Just you wait, and I’ll knock a couple of your teeth out."
Tong Yao also lost her patience, "Listen here, little girl. Think before you speak. My friend here has a strong arm, and if she’s pissed enough to fight you, you won’t stand a chance."
Guo Yun was taken aback, but quickly realized that Tong Yao was only trying to scare her off. She snorted, "Who are you trying to intimidate? I’m not afraid, you know. Do you know who my dad is?"
Guo Jinnian rolled her eyes, "I don’t care who your father is. Even if he were the Emperor, you should know better than to insult people."
"She should have known better than to manipulate me!" Guo Yun shouted back while glaring at Tong Yao, "If she can manipulate me, why can’t I insult her?"
Tong Yao sneered, "You’re the one with no self-control, always wanting to snatch things away from others. Now you’re blaming us?" 𝔫𝖔𝖛𝖕𝔲𝔟.𝔠𝖔𝖒
"You hadn’t paid for the clothes, so how can it be considered stealing from you?" Guo Yun utterly refused to back down.
Xiang Youyou, who had started the argument, remained quiet ever since but observed Tong Yao and Guo Jinnian closely, speculating about who they really were.
